First identify the problem: a video that looks blurry after sending needs a quality fix, while one that will not download or play needs a connection, format, storage, or app check. If a video has not downloaded automatically, check WhatsApp’s auto-download settings before troubleshooting playback.
Why does a WhatsApp video look blurry after sending?
WhatsApp offers Standard and HD quality for supported chat media. HD is clearer, but uses more data and takes longer to send. WhatsApp also says the internet connection affects media quality even when HD is selected. HD is not available for status updates or profile pictures.

Choose HD for the next send
- For one video: select the video in a chat, tap HD if the option appears, choose HD quality, then send it.
- For future uploads by default: open WhatsApp Settings > Storage and data > Media upload quality and choose HD quality. Menu labels and availability may vary by device and app version.
These options affect what you send next. HD cannot restore detail missing from the original recording, and WhatsApp does not provide a way to upgrade a video already delivered in a chat. If the original is available, send it again in HD over a strong connection.

Why won’t a WhatsApp video download or open?
WhatsApp identifies a weak internet connection as the most common reason media cannot be downloaded, opened, or sent. Work through the checks below in order, retrying the video after each relevant change.

1. Check the connection
- Confirm that other apps or websites can use the internet.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try the video again.
- If WhatsApp alone still cannot transfer media, try another Wi-Fi network or a hotspot; network restrictions can interfere.
2. Restart and update
Restart the phone, then install available WhatsApp and operating-system updates. If you are using WhatsApp Web, refresh the page; if the problem continues, clear the browser cache and cookies or log out and back in.
3. Check storage
Make sure the phone has free storage. Delete old or unused large files only if space is actually constrained. WhatsApp’s general troubleshooting guidance also suggests clearing the app cache to free device storage; Android settings for clearing cache vary by manufacturer and version.

6. Check an Android phone’s SD card, if it stores WhatsApp media
Confirm that the card has free space and is not read-only. If the card appears faulty and the problem persists, WhatsApp says it may be corrupted. Reformatting or replacing it may be necessary; replacement is relevant only when the card is established as the cause, and any replacement must be compatible with the phone.
What if the video is not downloading automatically?
If a video downloads when you tap it but does not download on its own, review WhatsApp’s Media auto-download settings for the network you are using, such as mobile data or Wi-Fi. Auto-download behavior is separate from whether a downloaded file can be opened or played.

When is the problem quality, downloading, or playback?
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Video looks soft after you send it | Whether HD was selected, the original recording’s detail, and connection strength during sending. |
| Video will not download | Internet connection first, then storage, app updates, permissions, and—on relevant Android phones—the SD card. |
| Video downloads but will not open or play | Whether the format is supported, then app/device updates and available storage. |
| Video downloads only when tapped | Media auto-download settings for the current network. |
WhatsApp’s Help Center pages accessed on October 9, 2026, provide these troubleshooting steps but do not state a universal compression percentage, typical quality loss, or failure rate. Menu labels and feature availability can vary by device, operating system, app version, and whether the media is a chat item or a status update.
