A screenshot can show several different dates, and they do not have to match. The date in a filename, the file-system timestamps, embedded image metadata, and the date shown by a gallery or cloud service may each come from a different clock or processing step. A historical Firefox DevTools bug even put the wrong day in screenshot filenames, but that issue was reported fixed in Firefox 89. The reliable way to troubleshoot is to identify which layer is wrong before changing time-zone or browser settings.
What “the timestamp” can mean
Start by locating the unexpected value. “Timestamp” is not a single field in a screenshot workflow.
| Where you see the date | What it usually represents | Why it can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Filename | A name generated by the browser, DevTools, operating system, or capture tool | The naming code may use a different clock, date format, or bugged calendar value. |
| File details | File-system creation, modification, or access time | Copying, downloading, extracting, syncing, or editing can update these values. |
| Embedded metadata | Values such as EXIF or software-specific metadata written into the image | The capture program may omit metadata, use UTC, or write its own capture time. |
| Gallery or cloud app | A date inferred by the receiving service | The service may read metadata, use upload time, apply a time zone, or process the image before display. |
Therefore, a filename that says one date does not prove that the image pixels were captured at that time, and a cloud gallery date does not prove that the local file had that timestamp.
First, isolate the layer that is wrong
- Keep the original file. Do not rename, edit, export, or resave it before checking the evidence.
- Write down the exact location of the discrepancy: filename, operating-system details, image metadata, or a photo/cloud app.
- Compare the original filename and file details. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Properties; on macOS, select it and press Command-I; on Linux, open the file manager’s properties or run
stat filename.png. These values can be different from one another. - Check the image metadata. An EXIF viewer or metadata command can show whether a capture date exists at all. A missing field is not evidence that the screenshot was taken at an unknown or incorrect time.
- Compare the local copy with the later display. If the local values are sensible but the cloud gallery is not, the transfer or service interpretation is the relevant layer.
- Record context: browser and version, capture method, operating-system time zone, whether daylight-saving time applied, and how the file was uploaded or transferred.
The documented Firefox filename bug
Mozilla Support contains a report phrased as “Firefox screenshots are saved with wrong time.” The reporter initially suspected a time-zone problem, then clarified that the actual symptom was a wrong day number in the filename. The case concerned screenshots made through Firefox DevTools, not every Firefox screenshot or every operating system.

Mozilla’s discussion says the filename problem was fixed in Firefox 89. A related Mozilla Bugzilla “Screenshot Node” report was marked resolved as a duplicate. That makes this a historical, path-specific explanation: it is useful when an older DevTools filename has the wrong calendar day, but it is not a universal explanation for a current mismatch.
What to do if you suspect that bug
- Identify the Firefox version that created the file, not only the version installed today.
- Check whether the error is confined to the generated name while the file details and image content are otherwise correct.
- Update Firefox if you are on an old release, then make a test screenshot and compare the new name.
- For an existing file, preserve the original and rename a copy if an accurate organizational date is needed. Renaming does not alter the pixels or prove a new capture time.
Time zones: distinguish an hour shift from a wrong day
Time-zone conversion normally changes the displayed hour and can move an event across midnight. It should not be your first explanation for every date mismatch. In the Mozilla report, the apparent time-zone diagnosis was later corrected to a one-day filename error.
Record the discrepancy precisely:
- One or more hours: compare the computer’s time zone, UTC offset, and daylight-saving status with the receiving app’s account or device zone.
- Exactly one calendar day in a filename: inspect the naming tool and its version before changing system settings.
- A completely different date after upload: compare local metadata and file details with the service’s import behavior and upload route.
A screenshot made near midnight is especially easy to misread: a service that converts a UTC metadata value to local time can display the previous or next day even when the underlying instant is the same.
Why capture methods can produce different evidence
Not every screenshot path renders a page in the same way. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation describes its /screenshot endpoint as rendering a page’s HTML and JavaScript and then capturing the fully rendered page. Firefox technical documentation distinguishes software snapshot capture from compositor readback; a software path can re-render a document rather than copy exactly what the display compositor produced. Firefox notes that a screenshot from one debugging path can look correct even when the real on-screen output is wrong.

Those distinctions explain why two methods can produce different pixels or loading states. They do not establish that either method inherently assigns an incorrect timestamp. Timestamp diagnosis still depends on where the date is written and later interpreted.
Capture-source checklist
- Browser user-interface screenshot (for example, an operating-system shortcut).
- Browser DevTools screenshot command.
- Automation or headless-browser screenshot.
- Hosted rendering or screenshot API.
- A later editor, converter, sync client, or cloud importer.
For each source, note whether it creates a new file, copies an existing one, writes metadata, or merely displays an image.

When the cloud or gallery date changes
A ShareX issue report describes an uploaded screenshot appearing with an unexpected timestamp in Google Photos. That is evidence of an individual reported symptom, not proof that Google Photos, ShareX, or every upload has a universal timestamp defect.
Use a controlled comparison:
- Save the original screenshot locally and calculate or record its file name, file details, and metadata.
- Upload that unchanged file once, using the normal route, and note the upload time and account time zone.
- Compare the service’s displayed date with each local value.
- Repeat with a copy whose filename is changed but whose pixels and metadata are untouched. If the displayed date changes, the service may be reading the name; if it does not, it may rely on metadata or upload time.
- Check the destination service’s current help documentation for import and time-zone rules before changing device clocks or rewriting metadata.
Do not infer that the device clock or original capture time was wrong solely because a receiving app shows a different date.

A repeatable diagnostic workflow
Step 1: Make an evidence copy
Duplicate the file without opening it in an editor. Work on the copy so that an export does not overwrite the original metadata.
Step 2: Inventory every date
Create a short record containing the filename, creation and modification times, any embedded capture field, the browser or tool version, and the date shown by the destination app.
Step 3: Classify the mismatch
Label it as filename-only, file-system-only, metadata-only, or post-upload. This classification narrows the possible causes much more effectively than changing the time zone at random.
Step 4: Reproduce with a fresh capture
Use the same browser, capture command, URL, and local time zone. Make a second screenshot and compare both names and file details. If only old files are affected, version history or a prior processing step is more likely than the current clock.

Step 5: Test the transfer separately
Open the new file locally, then upload it through the same route. A difference that appears only after upload belongs to the receiving workflow, not necessarily the capture tool.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely scope | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The filename is one day ahead, but the image and local file look normal. | Filename-generation logic, especially an old Firefox DevTools path. | Check the creating version; Firefox’s documented issue was fixed in version 89. Rename a copy if needed. |
| The hour is shifted by a few hours. | Time-zone or daylight-saving interpretation. | Compare the capture machine’s UTC offset with the receiving app’s zone and inspect the actual metadata field. |
| File details change after copying or syncing. | File-system timestamps were rewritten. | Use embedded metadata or a capture log for provenance; treat copied-file dates as handling dates. |
| Only the cloud gallery shows the wrong date. | Import, metadata parsing, account zone, or upload route. | Compare the untouched local file, test a renamed copy, and consult current service-specific guidance. |
| No embedded date exists. | The capture tool did not write metadata. | Use the filename and a separate capture log, or configure a tool that records metadata when provenance matters. |
| Two screenshot tools show different page states. | Different rendering, waiting, or compositor paths. | Compare browser version, wait conditions, JavaScript execution, and viewport; do not treat the visual difference alone as a timestamp error. |
How to make future screenshots easier to audit
- Keep the original file and avoid editing it before archiving.
- Use a consistent naming convention that includes an explicit zone, such as
2026-09-29T14-30-00Z-page.png, while remembering that a convention is not proof of capture time. - Record the browser, tool version, URL, viewport, and local time zone beside important captures.
- When evidence matters, save a capture log or request identifier from the automation system.
- Do not rely on a cloud gallery’s date as the sole audit record.
- Synchronize the device clock with a trusted time source, but still verify how each application converts and stores dates.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server when you need a repeatable capture rather than a manually configured browser. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. You can request full-page captures with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, time zone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and the OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; Growth is $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. For recurring, auditable captures, sign up for the free plan.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Waiting versus speed
Waiting for a selector, a fixed delay, or network idle can improve completeness but increases latency. A fixed delay is predictable yet may be too short for slow pages; a selector-based wait ties completion to a meaningful element; network-idle waits can be prolonged by analytics or streaming connections.
Caching
Caching reduces repeat work but can return an earlier page state. Use a TTL appropriate to the page’s update frequency, and disable or shorten it when the timestamp itself is the subject of the capture.
Failure accounting
When using an API, record the HTTP status and response headers alongside the file. ScreenshotNeo’s verdict and billing headers let you distinguish a clean capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit.

Reproducibility
Fix the viewport, device scale, time zone, locale, user agent, cookies, and wait condition when comparing screenshots. Otherwise, a visual difference can be caused by rendering context rather than a timestamp problem.

What cannot be concluded from one mismatch
The available documentation does not establish a universal browser, operating-system, or photo-service cause. One historical Firefox filename bug and one individual upload complaint should not be generalized to all tools. A defensible diagnosis names the exact capture path, software version, field containing the date, and transfer route. If those details are unknown, report the symptom and preserve the original file rather than claiming a definitive cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can renaming a screenshot fix its timestamp?
Renaming changes the filename only. It can correct an organizational label, but it does not change embedded metadata, file-system history, or prove when the pixels were captured.
Should I change my computer’s time zone first?
No. First determine whether the discrepancy is an hour shift, a wrong filename day, or a post-upload display. Changing the system zone can obscure the evidence.
Does a screenshot API automatically provide a trustworthy capture date?
Not necessarily. Check which date fields the service returns and retain the response, headers, and your own capture log if provenance matters.

They may use different rendering paths, browser versions, viewport settings, cookies, JavaScript timing, or wait conditions. That visual difference alone does not demonstrate a timestamp error.
The Bottom Line
Find the layer first: filename, file details, embedded metadata, or the receiving app. Then compare the original file, capture-tool version, time zone, and upload route. The Firefox DevTools filename problem was a historical bug fixed in Firefox 89; other mismatches require evidence from the exact workflow rather than a universal fix.
