Why Website Images Don’t Load in Microsoft Edge—and How to Fix It

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

When images do not appear in Microsoft Edge, first find the scope: does it happen on one website or several, and does it affect every image or only ads, embedded media, or images from a particular host? Reload the page, test another site, and open the same page in another browser. Those comparisons separate an Edge setting from a website, network, or image-host problem.

Use the fixes below in that order. Change one thing at a time so you know which action helped, and restore privacy settings after any narrow test.

Start by locating the failure

One site or many?

Open another page on the same site, then visit a completely different site. If images fail everywhere, suspect Edge, an extension, security software, or your network. If only one site fails, its image server, content-security rules, cookies, or a broken page may be responsible.

All images or only some?

  • Every image: check cache, extensions, privacy controls, network access, and security software.
  • Only third-party images, ads, or embeds: tracking prevention, cookie restrictions, or an extension may be blocking those requests.
  • One image host or content-delivery domain: the host may be unavailable or filtered.
  • Images appear as broken icons: the page loaded but the image request failed; note the affected URL or host when reporting the issue.

Compare browsers and networks

Try the page in another browser. If it also fails there, Microsoft says the network or website may be responsible; trying another device or network, such as a phone connection, adds useful evidence but is not absolute proof because browser settings can differ. Record whether the failure follows the device, browser, account, or network.

Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another browser and contacting the site owner if the page still will not load: What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working.

Fix Edge’s local data first

Clear cached images and files

Edge keeps local copies of images and other files so pages can load faster. A stale or damaged copy can make a page display incorrectly.

  1. Open Edge’s menu with Settings and more (the three dots).
  2. Choose History, then Open history page.
  3. Select Delete browsing data.
  4. Set Time range to All time.
  5. Select Browsing history and Cached images and files, then clear the data.
  6. Close and reopen the tab, and reload the page.

Start with the cache-only choices. Clearing cookies is broader and can sign you out of websites; use it only when the cookie tests later in this guide indicate a likely cause. Microsoft’s cache and history instructions are at View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge.

Rule out extensions without guessing

Extensions can rewrite pages, block requests, or alter privacy behavior. Microsoft recommends disabling extensions during troubleshooting, but that does not mean an extension causes every missing-image problem.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  1. Open Settings and more > Extensions.
  2. Turn off all extensions temporarily, then reload the affected page.
  3. If images return, re-enable extensions one at a time and reload after each change.
  4. When you identify a likely conflict, open that extension’s details and review its site access.

Edge can limit an extension to When you click the extension, On the current site, or On all sites. Give access only where you trust and need it. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing extension site access permissions.

Check tracking prevention and cookies

Use a narrow tracking-prevention test

Edge’s Strict tracking prevention blocks the most trackers and can cause some sites not to behave as expected. If only third-party images or embeds are missing, inspect the site’s blocked trackers and test a temporary exception for that trusted site rather than disabling protection globally.

Microsoft explains the levels, blocked-trackers view, and site exceptions in Learn about tracking prevention in Microsoft Edge. After testing, remove an exception or return to your previous setting if it made no difference.

Temporarily allow cookies and site data

Some pages obtain image URLs, login state, or anti-hotlink tokens through cookies. Microsoft warns that blocking cookies can prevent some pages from displaying correctly. For a site you trust, temporarily allow its cookies and site data, reload, and then remove the allowance if images remain broken.

Use the site-specific procedure in Temporarily allow cookies and site data in Microsoft Edge. A site exception is safer than turning off cookie protection for every website.

When the browser is not the cause

Check network reachability

If the same image fails in another browser, check whether the website itself opens, whether an image-host domain is blocked, and whether the problem disappears on another network. Restarting your modem or router can help with a transient connection problem. Corporate, school, DNS, or parental-control filtering may block image domains; an administrator may need to check those policies.

Review security software carefully

Endpoint security, firewalls, and network filters can affect web requests. Check their event logs or web-filter settings rather than permanently disabling protection. If you perform a brief diagnostic pause, do it only according to your organization’s policy and restore protection immediately.

Escalate to the website owner

Provide the page URL, your Edge version and operating system, the time of the failure, whether all or selected images are affected, and whether the page works in another browser or network. Microsoft explicitly advises contacting the website owner when the problem persists: “If this doesn’t work, contact the website owner and let them know you’ve been having problems loading the webpage.”

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Images load after a hard reload, then disappear again

Clear cached images and files and check whether an extension is rewriting requests. If the issue returns only on one site, report the page and image-host details to its owner.

Ads or social embeds are blank but article photos work

Review Strict tracking prevention, cookie restrictions, and extensions that block trackers. Test a temporary, site-specific allowance on a trusted website; do not make a global privacy exception as a routine fix.

Images fail on a managed work or school device

Organization policies may control Edge settings, extensions, DNS, or web filtering. Capture the affected domains and ask your administrator to review the policy rather than attempting to bypass it.

Only one device has the problem

Compare Edge with another browser on that device, then compare the same site on another device. This narrows the fault to local browser data, extensions, device security, or the network path.

It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Prevent repeat failures

  • Keep extensions limited and review their site access regularly.
  • Use site-specific privacy exceptions only for sites you trust, and remove ones that do not help.
  • When reporting a problem, record the exact page, affected image host, browser comparison, and network comparison.
  • For automated captures, use a service that reports whether a page was cleanly captured or failed so a broken image is not mistaken for a valid result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could an outdated Edge version cause missing images?

It can contribute to compatibility problems, but the documented troubleshooting sequence does not establish version age as the cause for a particular page. Install updates through Edge’s normal settings, then repeat the scope, cache, extension, and privacy tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing cookies delete my saved passwords?

Clearing cookies can sign you out and remove site preferences, but it is separate from deleting saved passwords. Use the cache-only cleanup first and make a site-specific cookie test before broader deletion.

Should I disable tracking prevention permanently?

No. Test only a trusted site with a narrow exception, then restore the prior setting if it does not resolve the images.

The Bottom Line

Identify whether the failure is local to Edge, limited to one site, or shared across browsers and networks. Clear cached images, isolate extensions, test privacy and cookies with narrow exceptions, then investigate network or site health. Escalate with precise reproduction details when the fault is outside your browser.
