When the preview is blank, the file is incomplete, or the layout is clipped, first test whether the problem affects one page or every page, then compare another browser. That isolates page-specific styling from browser, operating-system, printer-driver, connection, or hardware faults before you reset settings.
Start with the normal webpage-to-PDF workflow
Open the page you need, invoke the browser’s print command, and choose a PDF destination in the preview. In Firefox, the documented path is Menu → Print → Destination → Save to PDF. Other browsers and operating systems use different labels and shortcuts, so treat that path as a Firefox example rather than a universal menu sequence.
- Wait for the page to finish loading, including images or data that appear after scrolling.
- Open the browser print preview from the page menu or your operating system’s print shortcut.
- Select a PDF destination such as Save to PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Choose paper size, orientation, margins and scaling before saving.
- Save the file, reopen it in a PDF viewer, and check text, images and page count.
If the preview itself is blank or never appears, do not repeatedly click Save. Continue with the isolation tests below.
Use the symptom to identify the failing component

When the saved PDF is blank
Check whether the page itself rendered
Scroll through the webpage before printing. If headings, text or images are missing in the browser, printing will usually reproduce that missing state. Reload once, wait for dynamic content, and disable a reader-mode or content-blocking extension temporarily if it is changing the page. Do not assume a blank print preview means the PDF viewer is broken.

Compare another page
Print a simple, unrelated webpage or document. If that succeeds, the original page’s styling or script-generated content is implicated. Microsoft recommends trying Immersive Reader in Edge when the page supports it; the simplified reading view can show whether page styling is interfering with print output.
Compare another browser
Open the same URL in a second browser and use its built-in PDF destination. Mozilla recommends this comparison when diagnosing Firefox printing. A successful result elsewhere points toward browser-specific settings; failure across browsers points toward the page, operating system, connection or (for physical printing) the printer path.
When print preview fails or hangs
Edge
For an Edge preview that does not load, retry the print action and restart Edge. Then repeat the one-page-versus-many-pages test. Record whether the failure occurs on a single URL or on every document before changing system settings.
Firefox
Firefox can retain print preferences that become invalid after a browser, display or printer change. Open Firefox’s Troubleshooting Information page, find the printing section, and use the control to clear saved print settings. Reopen the page and create a fresh preview. Clearing these settings affects stored print configuration; it does not repair a website whose content fails to render.

Operating-system and connection checks
If multiple browsers and documents fail, check that the operating system is responsive, the printer (if you are printing physically) is online, and the network connection has not dropped while the page loads. A browser PDF save can fail because of the webpage, browser, printer driver, operating system, connectivity or hardware, so change one variable at a time.
Fix clipping, tiny text and incorrect page breaks
Choose the right orientation
Wide tables, dashboards and code blocks often need landscape orientation. Portrait is usually better for ordinary article pages. Set orientation in the print preview, then inspect the preview’s page thumbnails for truncated columns.
Fit the page to printable area
When the right edge or bottom of a page is missing, enable the browser’s fit-to-printable-area (or equivalent scaling) option. If text becomes unreadably small, use a modest custom scale instead of repeatedly shrinking the entire document. Edge documents orientation and fit-to-printable-area controls for this class of problem.
Use a simplified reading view
For an Edge page that prints with navigation, overlays or broken spacing, open Immersive Reader when available and print that view. This is a diagnostic and a practical workaround for pages whose normal styles are not print-friendly; it may omit interactive elements that cannot exist in a static PDF.

Expect dynamic and protected content to differ
Web apps may render charts, comments, advertisements or infinite-scroll sections only after interaction. A PDF is a snapshot. Expand the sections you need, scroll far enough to trigger lazy loading, and wait for network activity to settle before opening print preview. Content that requires a login, canvas rendering or a live connection may still not reproduce exactly.
Adobe browser extension: a separate troubleshooting path
If you are using Adobe’s browser print extension rather than the browser’s built-in Save-to-PDF destination, check the extension’s PDF handling. Adobe documents a Chrome check for the PDF documents setting and an Edge check for Always download PDF files. These settings apply to the extension workflow; do not treat them as a general explanation for built-in webpage PDF failures.
Verify the file before you rely on it
- Open the PDF in a viewer different from the one that created the preview.
- Search for a distinctive heading to confirm text is present and selectable.
- Check the first, middle and last pages for missing images, blank pages and clipped columns.
- Confirm links, page numbers and required sections survived the conversion.
- Compare the file’s page count with the preview thumbnails.
If the preview remains blank or the failure persists on several sites and browsers, write down the browser and version, operating system, page URL, exact error, whether another page worked, and every step already tried. Microsoft recommends including the error, page or document, steps taken and printer when reporting an Edge issue. Those details let browser, site or printer support reproduce the correct branch of the problem.
A repeatable diagnostic decision tree
- Preview or output? If preview is blank, test another page and browser. If preview is correct but the file is wrong, inspect scaling, orientation and PDF-viewer behavior.
- One URL or many? One URL suggests page styling or dynamic content; many suggests browser or system configuration.
- One browser or several? One browser calls for its documented reset or restart procedure. Several browsers call for page, operating-system, connection or printer testing.
- Digital save or physical print? If only physical printing fails, test another printer and its driver. A browser can successfully create a PDF even when a printer path cannot.
- Can you reproduce it? Save the URL, browser version, operating system, preview screenshot (if possible), error text and output file so support can investigate without guesswork.
