Konami never publicly stated a reason for removing P.T. Its notice said only that the PlayStation Store distribution period would expire on April 29, 2015. The removal came while Silent Hills, the game P.T. promoted, was being cancelled, but that context is not an official explanation.
Redownloading changed quickly. A report on April 30 said some previous claimants could fetch P.T. again; by May 6, reports said it had been removed from PlayStation servers, including for people who had added it to their libraries. The published record therefore supports no normal official redownload path. It does not establish whether every already-installed copy still runs today or validate unofficial recovery methods.

What P.T. was and what Konami announced
A playable teaser for Silent Hills
P.T. was a free digital PlayStation 4 “playable teaser” designed to reveal Silent Hills, a planned horror game associated with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro. Rather than functioning as a conventional demo, it presented a short, looping first-person horror experience and ended by revealing the project it was promoting. That unusual format made the download itself a notable part of the game’s identity.

On April 26, 2015, GameSpot reproduced a notice from Konami’s official P.T. website: “The distribution period of P.T. (Playable Teaser) on PlayStation Store will expire on Wednesday, April 29, 2015.” The notice supplied a date, not a reason. It did not mention licensing, technical problems, a policy violation, the cancellation of Silent Hills, or any other explanation.

That distinction matters. Contemporary stories connected the delisting with the cancellation of Silent Hills, but an event happening in the same period is not the same as a published statement from Konami explaining the decision.
The removal and redownload timeline
The practical answer depends on which part of the Store system is being discussed. A listing can disappear while an account entitlement remains, and an entitlement can remain while the download servers stop delivering the files. Reports from 2015 document those stages separately.
- April 26, 2015: GameSpot reported Konami’s notice that distribution would expire on April 29. No reason was given in the notice.
- April 29, 2015: The announced distribution period ended, and P.T. was no longer available as a normal Store listing.
- April 30, 2015: Game Informer initially reported that a person who had secured P.T. previously could download it again from the console library. The outlet said it tested that process, so this was evidence of a short-lived post-delisting window rather than proof of permanent access.
- May 6, 2015: GameSpot reported that P.T. was no longer downloadable from PlayStation servers, even for players who had previously added it to their libraries. Game Informer also reported Konami confirmation that the title had been fully removed.
The May 6 reports are later than the April 30 test and therefore control the historical answer about ordinary redownload. The change was not simply that the Store search result vanished; the delivery of the game files was reported to have been disabled as well.

Why was P.T. removed?
What Konami actually said
Konami’s quoted announcement gave an expiration date and nothing more. There is no official reason in that notice for readers to cite as the cause. Claims that the removal was definitely caused by a particular contract, dispute, technical issue, or corporate decision go beyond the documented statement.
Why the Silent Hills cancellation is relevant
The takedown happened amid the cancellation of Silent Hills, the project P.T. teased. That timing explains why contemporary coverage treated the two events as connected and why the delisting was interpreted as the end of the teaser’s promotional purpose. It remains context, however, not a confirmed rationale. A careful account should say that P.T. disappeared while Silent Hills was being cancelled, not that Konami expressly identified the cancellation as its reason.
Can someone who claimed P.T. still download it?
For the ordinary PlayStation download flow, the evidence says no. A previous claimant briefly appeared able to redownload the title on April 30, 2015, but later reporting on May 6 said the game had been removed from PlayStation’s servers even for accounts that had previously added it to their libraries. An old library entry therefore was not a lasting guarantee that the download would remain available.

This conclusion concerns the official Store and library process documented in those reports. It should not be turned into a promise about every account, console, or network state in the years since. The available reporting does not provide a current account-by-account test, and it does not establish a supported official method that restores the download.

Many online discussions use “available” to mean several different things. Separating them prevents a library icon or an old screenshot from being mistaken for a working download.

What if P.T. is already installed on a PS4?
An installation is a different situation from a redownload entitlement. The May 2015 reports establish that fetching a new copy from PlayStation servers was disabled; they do not test every copy that had already been installed before that change. Consequently, no evidence here can guarantee that an old installation will launch, remain usable after a console reset, or transfer to another system.

If you already have the game installed, avoid treating account-library screens, system transfers, backups, or an icon on the home screen as proof that a fresh download is available. Those features can display local or account information without demonstrating that the original package can be retrieved from Sony’s servers. The documented record simply does not answer the behavior of each retained installation.

Posts about P.T. often combine events from different dates. A reliable reading should identify the exact operation being claimed and the date of the report.
- Check the date first. An April 30, 2015 account of a successful library download predates the May 6 reports of server removal.
- Identify the action. Opening a library entry, seeing an icon, transferring local data, and downloading the game are different operations.
- Ask whether the source tested it. Game Informer’s April 30 report described a test; later reports described a changed server condition.
- Separate official from unofficial. A method involving altered system software, copied files, or a third-party server is not the normal PlayStation Store process and is not verified by the cited coverage.
- Do not infer a universal result. One preserved installation or one account result cannot establish what every console can do.
What is known—and what remains unknown
Established by contemporary reporting
- Konami announced that P.T.’s PlayStation Store distribution would expire on April 29, 2015.
- The announcement, as reproduced by GameSpot, did not state why the distribution was ending.
- P.T. was removed in the same period as the cancellation of Silent Hills, the project it teased.
- A previous claimant was reported able to redownload the game on April 30.
- By May 6, reports said PlayStation servers no longer supplied P.T., including to previous claimants, and that Konami had confirmed full removal.
Not established by those reports
- Konami’s internal deliberations or a specific contractual, legal, technical, or business cause.
- A guaranteed present-day result for a particular account, country, console, or installed copy.
- A supported way to reinstall P.T. after a console reset or hardware replacement.
- The safety, legality, reliability, or longevity of unofficial recovery techniques.
- Any download total or other statistic that would quantify how many people obtained the teaser.
Why old answers can appear to contradict each other
The apparent contradiction comes from the short interval between delisting and server removal. A page published immediately after April 29 could truthfully describe a library redownload that worked at that moment. A page published a week later could truthfully report that the same route no longer worked. Treating both statements as if they described one permanent policy erases the change documented between them.
When reading an archived answer, look for three details: its publication date, whether the writer had previously claimed P.T., and whether the test reached the download stage or stopped at the library screen. Those details explain most disagreements without requiring an undocumented explanation for Konami’s decision.
Bottom line for owners and would-be players
P.T. was removed after Konami announced an April 29, 2015 end to its distribution. Konami’s notice did not say why, although the removal coincided with the cancellation of Silent Hills. Previous claimants reportedly had a brief redownload window, but later reporting said the title had been removed from PlayStation servers for them as well. The defensible practical position is that normal official redownload is unavailable; the evidence does not promise what an already-installed copy will do or endorse an unofficial workaround.
