Warner Bros. shelved Batgirl in August 2022 rather than release it on HBO Max or in theaters. The Los Angeles Times reported an estimated production cost of $90 million, but the available reporting does not show that the studio recovered that amount through a tax benefit—or establish that the film can never be released.
What was Batgirl, and what did it cost?
Batgirl was a Warner Bros. DC feature starring Leslie Grace, originally planned for HBO Max. The Los Angeles Times reported its estimated production cost at $90 million in 2022; Guinness World Records also lists a $90 million budget. These are reported figures, not an independently audited final cost.

Guinness records that filming wrapped on March 31, 2022. That does not mean the movie was fully finished: contemporary coverage described it as nearly finished and in post-production. Warner Bros. announced on August 3, 2022 that it would not complete or release the film.

A changed release strategy
The film had been intended for HBO Max, but Warner Bros. decided against both a streaming debut and a theatrical release. Contemporary coverage situated the decision amid a change in studio leadership and a shift toward theatrical releases. The reporting supports that context, but does not establish the precise weight each consideration had in the final decision.

The cost of releasing it
The Los Angeles Times reported that the studio chose not to spend additional money on a theatrical campaign. Releasing a film can require further spending beyond production, including promotion; the cited coverage does not provide a full cost comparison showing exactly how much a release would have required or earned. So “worth more shelved than released” is a shorthand for the reported business decision, not a publicly demonstrated calculation that shelving was definitively more profitable.
Tax treatment was reported, but the benefit is unknown
CBS reported that Batgirl was to be written off. TheWrap, citing a company insider, reported that Warner Bros. expected tax treatment from not releasing Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt. A tax deduction reduces taxable income; it is not automatically a dollar-for-dollar repayment of production costs. The cited accounts do not specify the exact deduction, tax benefit, or accounting mechanics for Batgirl, so they do not support saying Warner Bros. got $90 million back.

Will Batgirl ever be released?
The Associated Press reported on March 31, 2025 that Batgirl remained unreleased. That establishes its status at the time of the AP report, not a guarantee about its future. The available reporting does not establish that the film will never become available.

The fate of another shelved Warner Bros. film offers context, not a forecast: the AP reported that Coyote vs. Acme had found a distributor, while Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt remained unreleased in March 2025.

Guinness World Records identifies Batgirl as the most expensive abandoned film in Hollywood history and lists its budget as $90 million. That is Guinness’s record designation based on its listed budget, not proof of an audited final production cost.
