Why Walking Can Help Relieve Constipation—and How Much to Do

Walking may help some adults with constipation, but it is not a guaranteed fix. The NHS says that a daily walk or run can help you poo more regularly. Clinical guidelines are more cautious: studies are inconsistent, the certainty of evidence is low, and no precise walking dose has been proved to work for everyone.

A sensible approach is to add comfortable, low-intensity walking to a broader routine that also addresses fiber, fluids and toileting habits. Use the schedules below as practical guidance—not as a prescription or a promise of relief.

What walking can realistically do

Constipation is often managed with several small changes rather than one intervention. Walking is a reasonable place to start because it is accessible, repeatable and fits the type of light, repetitive movement described in the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) adult guideline. That guideline includes walking among low-intensity activities such as low-impact aerobic exercise, light resistance training and leisure-level sports.

The NHS adult constipation guidance gives the simplest version of the advice: “A daily walk or run can help you poo more regularly.” This is practical self-care guidance, not evidence that every walk will produce a bowel movement or that walking alone resolves the underlying cause.

The 2022 Seoul Consensus on Clinical Practice Guidelines for Functional Constipation reaches a similar but qualified conclusion. Its Statement 14 says exercise may improve symptoms in some people with chronic constipation and can be recommended because it also provides general health benefits. The recommendation is conditional and the evidence level is low. The consensus notes that studies differ in their participants, exercise programs and outcomes, and that some studies found no benefit.

Neither guideline establishes a numerical treatment effect for walking. There is no reliable percentage improvement, guaranteed time to relief or proven “best” pace that can be applied to every adult.

How much walking should you try?

Two pieces of guidance are useful, but they should not be treated as competing prescriptions. They describe different ways to build movement into constipation self-care.

Guidance Suggested activity Who and how to interpret it Evidence qualification
NHS adult constipation guidance A daily walk or run General adult self-care; choose an activity and amount you can tolerate Practical advice, not a guaranteed dose-response
RNAO, A Proactive Approach to Bladder and Bowel Management in Adults, fourth edition (2025), recommendation 4.1 Low-intensity physical activity for about 30–60 minutes, as tolerated, at least three times a week Part of a wider multicomponent program for adults living with constipation Certainty of effects rated low
2022 Seoul Consensus, Statement 14 Exercise may be recommended Adults with chronic constipation; no specific walking duration is supplied Conditional recommendation with low-level evidence

The practical takeaway is to begin with a comfortable amount and work toward regular activity. If you are already active, a 30–60-minute low-intensity session at least three times weekly is the RNAO reference point. If that feels unrealistic, shorter, manageable bouts can be a way to establish the habit; the guideline does not prove that a particular split schedule is equivalent to one continuous walk.

A low-effort walking plan

1. Pick a repeatable time

Choose a point in the day when a walk is most likely to happen: after breakfast, during a lunch break or after work. The goal is consistency, not speed. A daily walk follows the NHS wording; walking on at least three days each week follows the RNAO frequency reference.

2. Keep the intensity low

RNAO defines low-intensity activity as light, non-strenuous, repetitive movement. A comfortable walk is therefore a closer match than a hard workout. You should be able to stop, rest or turn back without treating the session as a test of fitness.

3. Increase only as tolerated

If you are inactive, start with a duration that feels manageable and add time gradually. The 30–60-minute figure is a guideline target within a broader program, not a requirement to meet on the first day. Pain, marked breathlessness, dizziness or feeling unwell is a reason to stop and seek appropriate medical advice rather than push through.

4. Track symptoms without overinterpreting them

For a week or two, note when you walk, whether you had an urge to poo, stool frequency and any pain or bloating. A change may occur for reasons other than walking, including food, fluids, medicines or normal day-to-day variation. Treat the log as a way to see whether the routine seems useful to you, not as a clinical trial.

5. Keep the routine part of a wider plan

The RNAO studies included other measures, including fiber, fluids and toileting posture. Any improvement reported in those programs cannot be attributed to walking alone. Combining habits is more faithful to the evidence than treating a walk as a stand-alone cure.

Why the evidence is cautious

Exercise research in constipation has not used one consistent intervention. One study may examine a walking program, another a different form of exercise, and another a package that also changes diet and toileting. Participants may have different causes and durations of constipation, while outcomes may include symptom scores, bowel frequency or ease of passage. Those differences make results difficult to combine.

That is why the Seoul Consensus describes findings as inconsistent and makes a conditional recommendation. “May improve symptoms” is deliberately different from “will relieve constipation.” RNAO likewise rates the certainty of effects as low even while offering the practical 30–60-minute, three-times-weekly reference.

The guidelines do support a reasonable experiment: regular, low-intensity movement has potential benefit and little complexity for many adults. They do not support claiming that walking stimulates a specific bodily process in a predictable way, cures constipation, or replaces assessment when symptoms persist.

Combine walking with other NHS self-care steps

Increase fiber gradually

The NHS advises increasing dietary fiber gradually. An abrupt change can be difficult to tolerate, so adjust over time rather than making a sudden large increase. Foods and quantities are not specified in the cited guidance; choose changes that fit your diet and any medical advice you already receive.

Drink plenty of water and other fluids

Fluid intake is another part of the NHS advice. The guidance does not establish one universal volume for every adult. Your needs can vary with health conditions, climate, activity and medicines, so follow individualized advice if a clinician has told you to restrict or increase fluids.

Respond to the urge

When you feel the need to poo, try not to ignore it. Delaying repeatedly can make a regular toileting routine harder to establish.

Allow enough toilet time

Set aside time rather than rushing. A calm routine can be easier to maintain alongside a daily walk and gradual dietary changes.

Consider a low footstool

The NHS says a low stool can make it easier to poo by raising your knees above your hips while seated. A toilet footstool is an optional positioning aid, not a treatment proven to work by itself and not a substitute for medical care.

When to involve a pharmacist or clinician

If diet and lifestyle changes are not helping, the NHS suggests speaking with a pharmacist, who can advise whether a suitable laxative is appropriate. That is a next step, not a reason to start a product automatically. A pharmacist can consider your symptoms, other medicines and relevant health conditions.

Speak to a GP if constipation is not getting better with treatment or keeps coming back. NHS guidance also lists these reasons for review:

  • regular constipation or regular bloating;
  • blood in the stool;
  • unexplained weight loss;
  • persistent tiredness;
  • a sudden change in bowel habits; or
  • tummy or abdominal pain.

If you think a prescribed medicine is causing constipation, speak to your GP before stopping it. Do not discontinue a prescription on your own simply because you started walking.

Situations that need extra care

Pregnancy and after birth

The NHS notes that constipation is common during pregnancy and after birth and says its simple measures are safe to try during pregnancy. Individual circumstances still matter. Ask a midwife, GP or pharmacist about activity, fluids, fiber or medicines if you are pregnant, recently gave birth or have been advised to limit activity.

Children and babies

This article is about adult self-care. The NHS provides separate information for babies and children, so do not apply the adult walking schedules as pediatric treatment advice.

Existing exercise limitations

If pain, balance problems, heart or lung disease, recent surgery or another condition limits walking, ask a clinician what level of activity is appropriate. The phrase “as tolerated” in the RNAO recommendation means the activity should remain within your safe personal limits.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting for an instant result: the guidance does not promise that one walk will produce a bowel movement.
  • Treating 30–60 minutes as a guaranteed prescription: RNAO presents that duration as low-certainty guidance within a multicomponent program.
  • Assuming more intensity is better: the relevant recommendation is for low-intensity, non-strenuous movement.
  • Changing everything at once: gradual fiber changes and a manageable walking habit are easier to evaluate than several abrupt changes.
  • Ignoring warning signs: persistent, recurrent or concerning symptoms need clinical review even if you are walking regularly.
  • Stopping medication without advice: discuss a suspected medicine side effect with your GP first.

How to judge whether your plan is working

Give the routine enough time to become consistent, while paying attention to symptoms rather than chasing a target number. Look for whether bowel movements feel more regular or easier and whether discomfort is improving. If there is no improvement with treatment, symptoms recur, or any NHS warning sign appears, move from self-care to professional advice.

The most defensible expectation is modest: walking may help some adults as one part of constipation management. It is worth trying because it is simple and generally compatible with other healthy routines, but the available evidence does not establish a guaranteed amount, mechanism or effect size.
