Reports described seven cameras, binaural microphones and internal monitoring displays. Its potential significance is as a production experiment—not as a proven consumer product or a demonstrated blueprint for mainstream VR.
What was the VR “sex helmet”?
Head Rig 2.0 was a wearable camera system created by adult-video company VR Bangers. Futurism reported on December 20, 2018 that the rig was a proof of concept; Mixed.de described its first unit as 3D-printed and being tested. The reports presented it as a way to put the camera system on a human performer rather than film from a detached mannequin head.

The spider-like arrangement reportedly used seven cameras and two binaural microphones. Mixed.de reported capture at up to 8K resolution, a claimed 300-degree field of view, image stabilization and two displays inside the helmet. Futurism also reported the displays let performers see a live view while filming. These are reported design specifications and aims, not results from an independent benchmark.
How could seven cameras create a performer’s point of view?
The central idea is to mount the recording system on the performer, so the camera moves with that person instead of occupying a separate mannequin-head position. That can give a scene a more direct first-person perspective and may make eye contact and physical interaction feel more natural to the viewer.

The sources do not explain how the seven camera feeds were arranged, stitched together or delivered to a headset. Nor does the reported 300-degree field of view mean a full 360-degree capture. It is best understood as a reported capability of this prototype, not a standardized measure that establishes how it compares with other VR cameras.
Why put displays inside the helmet?
The internal displays were reported as live-monitoring screens. They could let a performer check the captured view during a take, giving the production team a way to see what the rig was recording without relying only on a detached monitor. The reports do not establish exactly what the performer saw, how the displays were configured or whether monitoring improved the finished footage.

What do stabilization and binaural microphones add?
Image stabilization is intended to reduce distracting camera movement, while binaural microphones are designed to capture sound with spatial cues that can make audio seem to come from particular directions. Both address qualities that matter in immersive video: a moving viewpoint can be uncomfortable, and flat-sounding audio can weaken a sense of presence. The available reports describe these as features, but do not provide controlled viewer tests showing that they made the helmet’s footage more comfortable or convincing.

Future of Sex reported that the wearable rig was intended to address problems with VR Bangers’ earlier mannequin-head arrangement. Producer Xander Jones said the earlier setup had issues and that not all performers liked it. A wearable system changes the production relationship: the camera follows a human performer, rather than asking other performers to interact with a separate camera mounted on a mannequin.

That shift could help preserve eye contact and make movement or interaction feel less staged from the viewer’s perspective. It also places equipment on a performer, so comfort and freedom of movement remain practical considerations. The reports explain the motivation for the redesign, but do not document a standardized comparison of performer comfort or footage quality between the two setups.
Could adult video shape mainstream VR?
It is plausible that techniques developed for adult VR video could inform immersive video more broadly, but the helmet itself does not prove that will happen. Futurism connected the idea to the adult-entertainment industry’s history of adopting and promoting media formats. It also reported, attributing the figure to The New York Times in 2017, that PornHub VR-video views rose 275 percent between 2016 and 2017. That is a reported change in views on one platform over that period, not evidence that this helmet caused the increase or that the broader VR-video market grew by the same amount.

The transferable idea is the production problem Head Rig 2.0 tried to solve: how to capture a stable, spatially convincing first-person view while allowing natural interaction. Whether that approach suits other VR video depends on factors such as the scene, performer comfort, camera placement, audio and the way footage is processed. The sources do not establish that other industries adopted this design.

The cited reports document a prototype and VR Bangers’ intention to use the rigs for its own productions, not a retail launch. In a statement to CNET quoted by Futurism, VR Bangers marketing director Ignor Zhivago said the company was choosing to maintain its competitive edge and use the rigs exclusively for its productions. The available reporting does not establish a public price, consumer release, patent outcome, successor model or industry-wide standard.

That distinction matters: a striking prototype can demonstrate a possible way to make video without becoming hardware that consumers or other production teams can buy. Head Rig 2.0 is evidence of an experiment in wearable capture, not evidence that a commercial “sex helmet” or a new mainstream VR format followed.
