VLC can look unlike Windows 11’s built-in apps because it uses its own cross-platform Qt desktop interface rather than adopting every Windows visual convention. VLC also supports optional skins and, in version 3.0.23, added a dark-mode option for Windows and Linux. Those VLC-side settings and updates are more plausible explanations than a Windows 11 redesign of VLC itself.
VLC is not a Windows-native interface
Windows 11 can make Microsoft-developed applications share a recognizable visual language, but compatibility with Windows does not require every desktop program to use that language. VLC’s documented Windows and GNU/Linux desktop interface is Qt, a cross-platform interface maintained as part of VLC’s own application layer. The same overview says VLC also supports skins on those platforms and that operation is essentially the same across its interfaces.

That architecture explains several visual differences a Windows 11 user may notice:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- VLC’s menus and playback controls may not use the spacing, icons, or typography seen in Windows 11 apps.
- The title bar, toolbar, playlist area, and preferences windows can follow VLC’s Qt styling instead of Windows 11’s current design conventions.
- A custom skin can replace much of the normal VLC window, making the difference even more obvious.
- VLC’s own light or dark appearance can differ from the Windows system theme.
None of those differences, by themselves, indicate a damaged installation. They are normal consequences of VLC using a cross-platform interface and allowing user-selectable skins.

What changed in VLC 3.0.23
The clearest documented appearance change is in VLC 3.0.23. In an announcement dated January 8, 2026, VideoLAN and the VLC team described version 3.0.23 as the 24th update to the VLC 3.0 branch. The release added a dark-mode option on Windows and Linux, added Windows ARM64 support, updated codecs, and improved support for Windows XP SP3.
“VideoLAN and the VLC team are publishing the 3.0.23 release of VLC today, which is the 24th update to VLC’s 3.0 branch: it updates codecs, adds a dark mode option on Windows and Linux, support for Windows ARM64 and improves support for Windows XP SP3.”
The dark-mode addition can change the appearance of VLC after an update, especially if the option is enabled automatically or if a user turns it on while comparing the new release. The announcement describes a VLC release change; it does not say that Windows 11 redesigned VLC’s interface.

Did Windows 11 change VLC?
VideoLAN lists Windows 11 among the Windows versions on which VLC runs. That is a compatibility statement, not a promise that VLC will look like a Windows 11-native application. The available release announcement does not attribute a general VLC redesign to Windows 11.
There are several reasons a user might associate a change with Windows 11 even when the cause is elsewhere:
- VLC may have updated independently of a Windows update.
- A previously selected skin may have been enabled again after reinstalling or resetting VLC.
- The user may have changed the interface or dark-mode preference without realizing it.
- Two computers may have different VLC versions, installation histories, or saved preferences.
- A Windows upgrade may have coincided with a VLC update, creating the impression that one caused the other.
Without the installed version, the selected interface, and a description or screenshot of the changed elements, it is not possible to identify one cause for every computer. The practical way to narrow it down is to compare those variables rather than assume that Windows supplied the new design.

A quick diagnosis: identify which part changed
Before changing settings, note exactly what looks different. This prevents a skin problem from being treated as a video-rendering problem, or a normal theme change from being mistaken for a failed update.
| What looks different | Most relevant check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Menus, toolbar, buttons, or the whole window | VLC version, interface preference, and active skin | These are controlled by VLC’s Qt interface and skin system. |
| Dark versus light colors | Whether the installed release supports dark mode and whether it is enabled | VLC 3.0.23 added a dark-mode option for Windows and Linux. |
| Window frame only | Whether the change is limited to the operating-system frame around VLC | A frame change does not prove that VLC’s internal interface was redesigned. |
| Video image, scaling, or playback output | Playback and video-output settings rather than skin settings | A skin changes controls; it does not by itself explain a change in the rendered picture. |
| Language or fullscreen controls | Language and fullscreen-controller preferences | The Windows FAQ documents these settings, but labels can differ between versions. |
This is a diagnostic framework, not a guarantee. A particular installation can have more than one change at once.
How to return to VLC’s normal appearance
If the window became unfamiliar after a skin change, the documented fallback is VLC’s native style. The exact wording can vary slightly by build, but the 3.0 skin instructions use the following path:
- Open VLC and choose Tools → Preferences.
- Open the Interface section.
- Under the appearance or interface-style choices, select Use native style.
- Apply or save the preference, then restart VLC.
Restarting is part of the skin workflow. If the interface is still unusable, repeat the same process after opening VLC with the simplest available window layout, or use the preferences reset option provided by your build if one is shown. Do not assume that reinstalling Windows is necessary merely because VLC’s controls look unfamiliar.
How VLC skins work
VLC supports custom skins on Windows and GNU/Linux. The documented workflow uses a VLT skin file:
- Open Tools → Preferences → Interface.
- Change the interface choice from Use native style to Use custom skin.
- Select the VLT skin file when VLC asks for one.
- Save the preference and restart VLC.
A skin can alter the window’s controls and overall visual arrangement, so a screenshot of a skinned VLC should not be used as a baseline for an unskinned installation. If a skin is incomplete, unreadable, or appears to break the window, switch back to Use native style and restart VLC. That is VideoLAN’s documented recovery step.
Older Windows guidance also describes selecting a skinnable interface in advanced preferences. That material refers to older Qt4-era labels, so the names and location may not match a current VLC installation exactly. Use the current Interface page as the first place to look, and treat older menu wording as version-specific rather than as evidence that your installation is missing a feature.

Understanding the dark-mode change
Dark mode is a VLC option added in 3.0.23 for Windows and Linux. It is separate from the fact that Windows 11 itself can use a dark system theme. VLC may therefore remain light while Windows is dark, or become dark because VLC’s own setting was changed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When comparing two computers, record both the VLC version and the appearance option. A machine running an earlier 3.0 build cannot be expected to show the same dark-mode control described for 3.0.23. Conversely, installing 3.0.23 can introduce an appearance choice that was not present in the older build.
The release announcement does not establish that dark mode is enabled automatically for every Windows 11 user. If your installation changed color after an update, check the VLC appearance settings before concluding that Windows forced the change.
Language and fullscreen behavior can also make VLC feel different
VLC’s Windows FAQ documents settings for changing the interface language and controlling fullscreen behavior. These changes do not necessarily alter the underlying Qt interface, but they can make the application seem unfamiliar:
- A different language changes menu names and the order in which you recognize commands.
- Fullscreen-controller behavior changes which playback controls appear while a video fills the display.
- Advanced-interface selections can expose a skinnable mode that looks unlike the standard layout.
Because the FAQ includes older setting labels, do not use an exact old label as proof that a current build is malfunctioning. Look for the equivalent setting in the current Preferences interface and verify the version before following instructions written for an earlier release.

Windows ARM64 and other 3.0.23 changes
VLC 3.0.23 also added support for Windows ARM64. That matters if VLC is running on an ARM-based Windows device, because the supported build and installation path may differ from those used on conventional x64 hardware. It does not mean that every Windows 11 computer receives a new visual design.
The same announcement mentions codec updates and improved Windows XP SP3 support. Those are functional and compatibility changes; they should not be presented as evidence of a Windows 11 visual refresh. The one appearance-specific change identified in the announcement is the dark-mode option.

What to do when VLC still looks wrong
If a custom skin caused the problem
Return to Tools → Preferences → Interface, select Use native style, save, and restart. This removes the custom-skin layer from the diagnosis.
If the colors changed after updating
Confirm the installed version and inspect VLC’s appearance choices. If the version is 3.0.23 or later within the 3.0 branch, a dark-mode option may explain the difference. Compare VLC’s own setting with Windows 11’s system theme instead of treating them as one control.
If only fullscreen controls changed
Check the fullscreen-controller preference. The documented FAQ covers this behavior, but the exact label can vary by version.
If menus are in another language
Check VLC’s language preference and restart if the build requests it. A language change affects labels, not necessarily the overall Windows integration.
If the video itself looks different
Separate the video image from the application chrome. Skins and interface styles explain controls and window layout; they do not, on their own, establish why colors, scaling, or rendering inside the video changed. Investigate playback and video-output settings separately.
If you cannot identify the cause
Write down the VLC version, whether Use native style or Use custom skin is selected, whether dark mode is enabled, and which elements changed. Those details are more useful than a general statement that “VLC looks different,” and they distinguish a version change from a preference change.
What is established—and what is not
It is established that VLC uses Qt for its Windows and GNU/Linux desktop interface, supports skins, and added a dark-mode option for Windows and Linux in version 3.0.23. It is also established that VLC supports Windows 11.
It is not established that Windows 11 imposed a universal redesign on VLC, that every Windows 11 user received the same appearance change, or that a particular screenshot can be explained without knowing the VLC version and preferences. No published incidence figure identifies how many Windows 11 users saw VLC change. The “24th update” description refers to the count of updates in the VLC 3.0 branch, not to the number of affected users.
Bottom line
VLC looks different from Windows 11’s built-in apps because it is a cross-platform Qt application with its own interface and optional skins. The documented appearance change most likely to affect a recent installation is VLC 3.0.23’s new dark-mode option for Windows and Linux. Check the VLC version, inspect Tools → Preferences → Interface, and return to Use native style if a custom skin is responsible. Windows 11 compatibility does not require VLC to look native to Windows.
