Android Auto does not currently support the video-app category. Android Auto runs on your phone and projects a driving-optimized interface to a compatible car display; its supported media experience is built around audio. Video apps are generally available on Android Automotive OS, the Android system built into some vehicles, and are intended primarily for use while the vehicle is parked.
That distinction is why a phone setting, wireless adapter, or mount cannot officially make a video app appear in Android Auto. For entertainment while driving, use a supported audio app. For video, use a compatible Android Automotive OS vehicle while parked, and check Google’s current Android for Cars documentation because availability is changing.

Why video is blocked in Android Auto
Android Auto is designed for driving
Android Auto’s projected interface is limited to experiences that can be used with minimal visual and touch demand. Google’s Android for Cars guidance separates driving-oriented audio media from parked activities. Music, radio, podcasts and audiobooks can expose controls suitable for a driver; streaming video requires sustained visual attention and is therefore not in Android Auto’s supported video category.
The restriction is enforced by the platform
This is not normally an app crash, a missing permission or a hidden switch. Google controls which car-app categories a platform can expose. Its parked-app documentation explicitly lists the “Video category” as “Generally available on Android Automotive OS; unsupported on Android Auto.” You can read the current category matrix at Android Developers’ parked-app page.
Motion detection closes parked experiences
Even where a parked app is supported, the system treats vehicle motion as a hard boundary. Google’s Android Auto overview states: “For safety purposes, Android Auto automatically exits an app when vehicle motion is detected.” That behavior is described at Android Auto overview. A video that starts while stationary should not be expected to remain available after you begin moving.

The reviewed official guidance does not publish a crash-rate percentage or other numerical estimate specifically for video playback in Android Auto. The documented reason is platform safety policy and user-experience restrictions, not a stated statistic.
What you can use while driving
Choose a supported audio media app
For entertainment on a moving trip, use an audio media app that supports Android for Cars. Google’s media guidance covers music, radio, podcasts, audiobooks and other audio content, with controls designed for the car display and steering-wheel or voice interaction where the vehicle supports them. Start playback before driving or use the car’s approved controls rather than trying to display a video surface.
Android Auto’s supported media category is separate from a phone app’s ordinary mobile interface. An app may play video on the handset yet offer only audio controls, or no Android Auto interface at all, when connected to a car.
Do not treat audio-only playback as video support
Some vehicle implementations or Automotive OS devices can allow audio to continue when a parked activity is restricted. That does not make the video category available in Android Auto, and it does not authorize watching the phone’s screen while driving. If an app supplies an audio track through a supported media service, use that supported audio experience instead of attempting to keep its video window open.

Can Android Auto play video while parked?
Android Auto parked apps are limited
On devices running Android 15 or higher, Android Auto can support certain parked apps on the head unit. Google says Android Auto automatically exits a parked app when motion is detected. However, the current Android Auto parked-app category list does not include video. The existence of parked apps therefore should not be read as permission to install a streaming-video app in Android Auto.
Availability also depends on the phone’s Android version, the Android Auto release, the vehicle display and the app’s category declaration. If the app is not offered in the Android Auto launcher, changing an Android Auto setting will not add it.
What to check if a parked app is missing
- Confirm that the phone is running Android 15 or later if you are relying on Android Auto’s parked-app capability.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle and open the Android Auto app list on the car display.
- Look for the app’s supported car experience, not merely its normal phone icon. A mobile video app can be absent because its category is unsupported.
- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s Android Auto compatibility information and Google’s current category documentation.
- Test only while the vehicle is fully parked in a safe, legal location. Expect the system to exit the app as soon as motion is detected.
How to watch video legally and safely on a compatible vehicle
Use Android Automotive OS, not a projected Android Auto session
Android Automotive OS is installed in the vehicle itself. On a compatible implementation, the vehicle can offer video apps for parked use through its own app system. Google’s Build video apps for Android Automotive OS documentation describes the parked-video model and the restrictions that apply when the car is no longer stationary.
- Identify whether your vehicle runs Android Automotive OS. A car that merely displays Android Auto from a phone is not necessarily an Automotive OS vehicle.
- Open the vehicle’s built-in app store or app launcher while parked and look for video apps approved for that vehicle and region.
- Install or open the app through the vehicle’s own interface, following the vehicle’s account, network and consent prompts.
- Keep the car parked for the entire viewing session. Do not rely on a passenger holding a phone or on a screen that remains visible after the car starts moving.
- When driving restrictions activate, expect the video activity to stop, pause or become unavailable. Some supported devices may retain audio-only playback, but the video surface remains restricted.
Vehicle support is not universal. Automaker software, hardware, geographic availability and the app developer’s Automotive OS support all affect what appears in the built-in catalog.

Wireless adapters change the connection, not the app catalog
A wireless Android Auto adapter can replace a cable with a wireless connection, but it does not turn Android Auto into Android Automotive OS or add an unsupported app category. The official Android for Cars documentation reviewed here does not identify a generic adapter as a supported way to enable video.
A phone mount is not an Android Auto video solution
A mount may position a phone for a passenger, but it does not create an Android Auto video interface. The driver must still follow local laws and safe-driving requirements; the mount should never be presented as a method for watching video while driving.
Developer settings and sideloading are not official support
Changing Android Auto developer options, installing an APK outside the normal catalog or modifying a phone’s display settings cannot establish platform support. Such workarounds can fail after an update, expose account or device data, violate vehicle or service terms, and leave the driver with an unsafe distraction. They are not documented solutions in Google’s Android for Cars guidance.

- Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
- Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
- Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
- Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.
Troubleshooting: identify the platform before changing anything
The app works on the phone but not on the car screen
This usually means the phone app has no supported Android Auto car experience or belongs to an unsupported category. Verify whether the car is receiving a projected Android Auto session or running Automotive OS natively. A normal phone playback test does not prove car-display compatibility.

The app appears, then disappears when you move
That is expected behavior for a parked experience. Android Auto’s documented behavior is to exit an app when vehicle motion is detected. On Automotive OS, parked activities are similarly subject to user-experience restrictions. Stop the vehicle completely before testing again; do not attempt to defeat the motion check.
There is no video option in the launcher
Check the Android version, Android Auto version, vehicle compatibility and the app’s declared category. Android Auto’s current documented parked-app categories do not include video, so reinstalling the same streaming app generally will not change the result.
A system update changed what is available
App-category support can change with Android Auto, Automotive OS, vehicle firmware and app updates. Recheck Google’s Android for Cars pages and the automaker’s release notes rather than relying on an older tutorial or a screenshot from another vehicle.
What Google’s 2026 update means for future Android Auto video
Google’s Android for Cars update dated May 19, 2026 says video-app experiences are coming to Android Auto and invites developers to express interest in an early-access partner route. The notice does not provide a general-release date or establish that consumers can enable video today. Read the current entry at What’s new in Android for Cars.
Until Google publishes broader availability and your vehicle and app are included, treat Android Auto video as unsupported. A developer early-access path is for app development and partnership, not a consumer switch or a guarantee that a particular streaming service will work in your car.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- You are driving: use a supported Android Auto audio media app.
- You are parked and have Android Automotive OS: use a video app offered by the vehicle’s built-in system, if available in your region and vehicle.
- You are parked with ordinary Android Auto from a phone: do not assume parked-app support includes video; the documented Android Auto video category remains unsupported.
- You are considering an adapter or workaround: it cannot officially add the missing category, and an unverified bypass is not a safe solution.
- You saw news about Android Auto video: check Google’s latest Android for Cars update for actual rollout status rather than treating the May 2026 early-access announcement as a general launch.
