Why USB-C Headphones or Adapters May Not Work With Your Phone

A USB-C plug does not guarantee USB-C audio. Your phone must support audio through its USB-C port, and a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter may need a built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC). Even when music works, calls, buttons, microphones or other headset features may not. Check the exact phone model, adapter design and software before replacing anything.

What the USB-C connector does—and does not—tell you

USB-C identifies the shape of the connector and the physical port. It does not identify every feature that the port supports. A phone can use USB-C for charging and data without accepting audio accessories through that same port.

Google’s guidance for Pixel USB-C earbuds says the phone needs both a USB-C port and support for USB-C digital audio. The company recommends checking the device specifications or asking the phone manufacturer. That is the first compatibility test: confirm audio support for the exact model, not merely the presence of a USB-C socket.

Audio accessories also differ. USB-C headphones generally contain electronics that process the digital audio signal. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter must convert the phone’s digital output into the analog signal expected by traditional headphones. Samsung’s guidance for relevant newer Galaxy models says to use an adapter with a built-in DAC and to check DAC compatibility when choosing an adapter from another manufacturer.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The four compatibility questions to answer

1. Does the phone support USB-C digital audio?

Look up the exact model in the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation. Do not rely on the phone’s charging speed, USB version or the fact that another USB-C accessory works. Those features do not establish audio support.

If the specifications are unclear, contact the phone maker and ask specifically whether the USB-C port supports digital audio and which wired headsets or adapters are supported.

2. Does a 3.5 mm adapter contain the required DAC?

When you plug conventional 3.5 mm headphones into an adapter, the adapter may need to perform the digital-to-analog conversion. Samsung’s support guidance warns that a lack of DAC compatibility can cause connection problems and says third-party adapters should be checked for DAC compatibility.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Search descriptions should clearly identify the product as a “USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter with built-in DAC.” That wording is a useful starting filter, not a universal guarantee: verify that the DAC and the adapter are compatible with your particular phone.

3. Which headset functions must work?

Audio playback, phone calls, a microphone, inline buttons and volume controls are separate functions. A phone may play music while handling calls differently, or may not support calls through a particular USB-C headset at all. Google notes that some devices do not allow calls through USB-C earbuds. Samsung likewise cautions that not every USB-C headset feature works on every device.

Write down the function that is failing. “No sound,” “music works but calls do not,” and “the buttons are ignored” point to different compatibility checks.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

4. Is the problem hardware, software or a loose connection?

A damaged cable or plug, debris in the port, an attached case or accessory, muted volume, an operating-system issue or a defective headset can produce the same symptom as incompatibility. Testing the parts separately is faster than assuming the phone is at fault.

USB-C headphones and USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapters are not interchangeable

Accessory What to verify Typical compatibility concern
USB-C digital-audio headphones The phone supports USB-C digital audio and the headset is identified as compatible with that phone family. The port may support charging or data without supporting the headset’s audio method.
USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter The phone’s USB-C audio support and the adapter’s built-in DAC compatibility. An adapter without the DAC the phone requires may connect physically but produce no audio.
Third-party adapter Compatibility information for the exact phone model, plus support for the functions you need. DAC-equipped does not by itself prove that every phone will work with the adapter.

There is no universal cross-brand compatibility matrix established by the manufacturer guidance. Treat a product listing that mentions only “USB-C” as incomplete until it states the relevant digital-audio and, where applicable, DAC support.

Diagnose the failure before buying anything

Use the following sequence. It separates a phone-side problem from an accessory problem and incorporates the checks recommended in Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.

  • [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly
  1. Identify the exact phone model. Record the model name and, if relevant, its regional or carrier edition. Open the manufacturer’s specifications or support pages and confirm USB-C digital-audio support. If the information is missing, ask the manufacturer directly.
  2. Identify the complete audio chain. Note whether you are using USB-C headphones, a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, an extension cable or another accessory. For an adapter, find out whether it has a built-in DAC and whether the maker lists compatibility with your phone.
  3. Test the headphones on another device. Use a device known to support the same connection type. If the headset fails there too, inspect it for damage or arrange a replacement before troubleshooting the phone further.
  4. Test a known-working headset on the phone. Use a compatible USB-C headset or a verified DAC-equipped adapter and 3.5 mm headphones. This comparison helps show whether the original accessory is the problem.
  5. Remove cases and other connected accessories. A case can prevent the plug from seating fully. Disconnect hubs, chargers or other USB accessories, then insert the audio connector firmly without forcing it.
  6. Restart the phone. Reconnect the headset after the phone has finished starting. A restart can clear a temporary USB connection or audio-routing error.
  7. Inspect the connector and port. Look for bent contacts, a split cable, moisture, lint or visible debris. Do not push objects into the port or use a damaged cable; obtain manufacturer service guidance if the port is damaged.
  8. Check volume and audio settings. Raise media volume while playback is active and confirm that the phone has not muted the output. Some devices require USB-C audio to be enabled in sound settings; if your phone provides such an option, make sure it is enabled.
  9. Install available software updates. Update the phone using its normal system-update screen, then test the headset again. Keep track of whether the failure affects playback, calls or controls after the update.
  10. Escalate with specific evidence. If a listed-compatible accessory still fails, tell the phone or accessory manufacturer the exact model, adapter type, DAC information, software version and results of the cross-device tests.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

Symptom Checks to prioritize
No audio immediately after connection Confirm USB-C digital-audio support, verify the adapter’s DAC when using 3.5 mm headphones, reseat the plug, inspect for debris, check volume and test another headset.
Music plays but calls do not Check whether the phone supports calls through that USB-C headset and whether the headset’s microphone is supported on the model.
Audio works but buttons or volume controls do not Check the phone maker’s feature-support notes; USB-C headset controls are not supported on every device.
The headset works on another phone but not yours Verify your model’s USB-C digital-audio requirements, any required DAC and software or sound-setting options.
Several known-working headsets fail on the phone Remove cases and accessories, restart, inspect the port, install updates and contact the phone manufacturer if the problem remains.

Model-specific guidance from Google Pixel and Samsung

Google Pixel

Google says Pixel USB-C earbuds require a USB-C port with USB-C digital-audio support. Check the specification for the exact Pixel model or contact the device maker if the support information is unclear. Google also notes that some devices may require USB-C audio to be enabled in sound settings and that some may not support calls through the earbuds.

For Pixel owners, a “USB-C” label alone is therefore insufficient. Confirm digital-audio support, then confirm that the headset’s required functions—especially calls—are supported.

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung’s guidance for relevant newer Galaxy models recommends a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC. Its support page, updated August 12, 2026, says: “Please note: If you choose an adaptor from a different manufacturer, always ensure that it is DAC compatible.” Because this advice is model-specific, check your own Galaxy model rather than applying it to every Samsung phone.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Samsung also warns that USB-C headset features are not supported on every device. A compatible connection for music does not automatically establish support for calls, microphones or controls.

How to choose a replacement accessory

Compare products against the phone’s requirements in this order:

  • Exact model compatibility: The listing or manufacturer documentation should identify your phone family or model, not just USB-C devices generally.
  • Audio path: For USB-C headphones, confirm USB-C digital-audio support. For 3.5 mm headphones, confirm that the adapter includes the required DAC.
  • Required functions: Check support for calls, the microphone, inline controls and volume buttons if you need them.
  • Manufacturer certification or compatibility statement: A phone maker’s certified or specifically listed accessory provides stronger evidence than a generic connector description.
  • Physical fit: Make sure the plug can fully seat with your case installed, or remove the case when using the accessory.

Do not assume that two adapters with identical plugs behave identically. Their internal audio conversion and supported features can differ. Conversely, a DAC-equipped adapter is not a promise that it works with every phone; the phone model remains part of the compatibility test.

When troubleshooting cannot solve it

Stop repeated swapping if the port is physically damaged, the connector becomes hot, the cable shows exposed conductors or the phone reports moisture. Follow the manufacturer’s service instructions instead of forcing the plug or attempting an improvised repair.

If the accessory is explicitly listed as compatible and passes testing on another device, provide the manufacturer with the model number, purchase accessory type, DAC details, software version and the exact symptom. If an adapter works for music but not calls or controls, report that distinction; it is useful evidence that the connection is present but a feature is unsupported.

The practical buying rule

For conventional wired headphones, start with the search phrase “USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter with built-in DAC,” then verify compatibility with the exact phone model. For USB-C headphones, verify that the phone supports USB-C digital audio and that the desired functions are supported. A connector that fits is only the beginning of the check.
