That judgment rests on character chemistry, pacing, exploration, action, and payoff. Players who value Nathan Drake’s long character arc or another entry’s grander spectacle may reasonably choose differently.
What makes The Lost Legacy stand out
Released by Naughty Dog on August 22, 2017, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a standalone adventure led by Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross rather than Nathan Drake. Chloe recruits Nadine to find the Golden Tusk of Ganesh in India’s Western Ghats; the hunt also pushes Chloe to confront her past and consider what she will sacrifice to shape her legacy. PlayStation’s game page describes a journey through the region associated with the former Hoysala Empire, including urban, jungle, and ancient-ruin environments.

That setting is more than a backdrop for a familiar chase. The contrast among city, wilderness, and ruins gives the journey a sense of place, while the Hoysala context ties the treasure hunt to the specific history and locations the game presents. The result is a distinct adventure within a series built around globe-spanning expeditions.

Chloe and Nadine change the emotional center
The central strength is the shifting partnership between Chloe and Nadine. Neither is simply there to orbit Nathan Drake’s story: the adventure belongs to two characters with their own histories, agendas, and reasons to distrust one another. Their exchanges give the quieter stretches a different energy from a story centered on Nathan and his familiar circle, and the plot’s emotional attention stays with Chloe’s choices and the question of what her past means to her future.

That independence is the key to the game’s identity. GameSpot’s roundup quotes reviewer Miguel Concepcion describing an opening that has an “‘Uncharted Greatest Hits’ vibe,” before developing into a “more nuanced, clever experience” that stands on its own rather than being anchored to Nathan Drake’s exploits. GameSpot’s series ranking captures the useful distinction: familiar pleasures get the adventure moving, but its leads give those pleasures a new emotional focus.
Why it edges out Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 4
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End remain powerful alternatives. Uncharted 2 is often remembered for the series’ high-adventure spectacle, while Uncharted 4 gives Nathan Drake’s story a broader, more conclusive arc. If those are your main criteria, either may be your personal best. The case for The Lost Legacy is that its more concentrated scope lets character, exploration, action, and resolution work together without needing to carry Nathan’s saga.

There is no objective scoring system that settles the ranking. Metacritic’s listing for Uncharted 2 shows a score of 96, but that is an aggregator snapshot, not a measure of which game best serves every player or a verdict on The Lost Legacy. Metacritic’s listing should be read as one historical comparison, not as a substitute for deciding what matters to you in an adventure game.

The Lost Legacy retains the series’ mix of puzzle solving, platforming, and gunfights, while giving exploration room to matter alongside action. Its Western Ghats route links the search for the Golden Tusk to contrasting environments rather than treating every location as a corridor toward the next set piece. This balance helps explain why a smaller-scale story can feel complete rather than slight. The adventure has recognizable Uncharted momentum, but the search itself and the relationship between its leads provide connective tissue between action sequences. Players looking for the longest campaign or the most expansive Nathan Drake spectacle may favor another game; those who want a focused entry with room to explore have a strong reason to start here.

For PS5 players who want this adventure alongside Uncharted 4, PlayStation’s Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection bundles remastered versions of both games. So, is The Lost Legacy the best Uncharted game?
It deserves the top spot if “best” means the most focused combination of character chemistry, exploration, varied action, and a satisfying standalone identity. Its strongest argument is not that it outdoes every predecessor at spectacle, but that Chloe and Nadine make a familiar kind of adventure feel meaningfully different. If Nathan Drake’s personal journey is what you value most, Uncharted 4 may remain your favorite; if you prize landmark set pieces, Uncharted 2 has a compelling claim. For a self-contained Uncharted story with its own center of gravity, The Lost Legacy is the series’ clearest choice.
