Diesel prices have climbed sharply, raising costs for truckers, farmers and businesses that move goods. The increase could add to pressure on household budgets and give Donald Trump’s critics another economic issue to press—but available evidence does not show that diesel prices have changed voters’ preferences or will decide the midterms.
How high are U.S. diesel prices?
The Week reported that U.S. diesel reached $6.52 per gallon in the previous week, compared with an average of $3.63 at the start of 2025. The Week did not identify a directly checked primary weekly price series for its $6.52 figure, so treat it as that publication’s report rather than as a separately verified national average. The Week’s 2026 report attributes the price pressure to disruption associated with the Iran and Ukraine wars.

A separate, earlier snapshot from the Associated Press gives useful context but measures a different date: AP reported a U.S. average of $5.85 per gallon on 4 September 2026, describing it as a record at that point. Before the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran in late February, the average was about $3.76, according to AAA figures cited by AP. These dated reports should not be treated as readings from the same week or price series. AP’s account focused on crude prices and Middle East supply disruption. Read AP’s September report.

Freight and deliveries
Diesel powers a large share of freight activity, so a price jump raises operating costs for truckers and other businesses moving goods. Ajesh Kapoor, CEO and founder of trucking technology company SemiCab, told AP: “Diesel price has a very, very direct impact on everything that moves on pretty much any mode.”

Farming and food
Farm equipment and food-supply logistics also use diesel. Higher fuel costs can therefore affect both production and delivery, but that does not mean grocery prices rise immediately or by the same amount as fuel. Businesses may initially absorb some costs under existing freight contracts or through retailer margins. David Ortega, professor of food economics and policy at Michigan State University, told AP: “Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins,” and “But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store.”
The timing and size of any consumer-price effect depend on how long costs remain high and when contracts or surcharges change. Diesel is one possible cost pressure on food and other goods, not proof that any particular price increase at the checkout was caused by fuel.

Could a diesel export ban bring down prices?
The Week reported that Trump was considering restricting U.S. diesel exports. The account did not include an official proposal, text or government explanation establishing the restriction’s scope or status. It should be understood as a reported possibility, not an enacted ban.
The policy argument involves a trade-off between keeping more fuel in the country and the way U.S. supply is produced and distributed. In The Week’s analysis, restricting exports might briefly ease prices in some places, but the effect could vary by region and could create other supply problems.

Why the effect could differ by region
The Week says the Northeast and West Coast depend more heavily on imports, while Gulf Coast refineries supply export markets. If exports were blocked, Gulf Coast refineries could face storage constraints, according to the article. Those are reported policy concerns, not established forecasts of what would happen under a defined ban. A restriction might not translate into uniform or lasting relief at pumps across the country.
Why trading partners matter
The Week names Mexico, the UK and the Netherlands among buyers of U.S. diesel and raises the possibility of retaliation if exports were restricted. Retaliation is a risk described in the article, not a confirmed response from those countries.

Could diesel prices become a problem for Trump with voters?
Higher diesel costs could add to economic concerns because they hit visible groups such as truckers, farmers and pickup owners directly, while freight-related costs can reach other households later. That makes diesel a plausible campaign talking point. It does not establish that these groups will change their votes or that voters will blame Trump for the increase.
AP reported that AP-NORC polling in summer 2026 found two-thirds of U.S. adults disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy. That is a broad measure of economic approval, not a survey about diesel prices. It cannot show that fuel costs caused the disapproval or predict how diesel will affect election results.

The political risk is therefore conditional: sustained fuel costs could compound wider economic dissatisfaction and provide an issue for candidates to argue over. The available reporting does not demonstrate a diesel-specific voter shift or show that diesel prices will determine the midterms.
