Donald Trump criticized Fox News after it aired Democratic figures making comments he described as negative toward Republicans and himself. In a post quoted by Reason, he complained about Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries and Jessica Tarlov appearing on the channel, and said the coverage was one reason “MAGA, and REAL Patriots” would not like Fox.
What Trump said about Fox News
In a Truth Social post reported as appearing on a Wednesday, Trump asked: “Why does FoxNews [sic] always put Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Jessica Tarlov, and every Democrat on, saying bad things about the Republican Party and, of course, me?” He continued: “This is why MAGA, and REAL Patriots, will never like Fox! They repeat a completely negative narrative, on and on it goes, and then we get a quick retort.” Reason’s October 2, 2026 report quotes the post; the original post’s timestamp is not independently established here.

Who were the Democrats he named?
Schumer and Jeffries are Democratic congressional leaders. Tarlov is a Democratic strategist and regular panelist on Fox’s The Five. The report notes that the program has four Republican panelists and one Democratic panelist. It does not say that all three named figures appeared in the same segment, or establish that each appearance prompted Trump’s post.
Was a particular Fox clip the trigger?
Matt Gertz of Media Matters speculated that Trump may have seen a Fox clip shortly before posting, in which Schumer criticized Republicans’ approach to AI policy. That is a possible explanation, not a confirmed cause: the report does not establish what Trump watched or what specifically prompted the post.

How does this fit Trump’s earlier criticism of Fox?
The report recalls a July 2024 Trump post telling Fox News, “STOP PUTTING ON THE ENEMY!” Reason’s author reads the newer complaint as treating routine coverage of opposing views as disloyalty. That is the author’s interpretation of the episode, distinct from the wording of Trump’s post itself.
What does the report say about Fox’s coverage and press freedom?
Reason cites Matt Gertz’s figure that, on weekdays in September, 148 Republican lawmakers and Trump administration officials appeared as guests on Fox News, compared with seven Democratic lawmakers. The cited passage does not specify the year for that September count, and the figure is attributed rather than independently verified here.

The article also discusses broadcast licensing, but Fox News is a cable channel, not a broadcast station. The distinction matters: Reason quotes then-FCC chairman Ajit Pai saying in 2017, “Under the law the FCC does not have the authority to revoke a license of a broadcast station based on the content of a particular newscast,” and, “I believe in the First Amendment.” Those comments concern broadcast-station licenses; they are not a ruling about Trump’s post or a Fox News cable broadcast.
