The Tesla Cybertruck is the likely vehicle behind claims that Tesla has had its “worst flop,” but that label is an opinion, not a measured ranking of Tesla products. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: its launch ambition greatly exceeded reported sales, it arrived late, and a series of recalls drew attention to quality and safety concerns. Tesla’s 2024 annual report still listed the Cybertruck in active production in Texas.
Why the Cybertruck is called a flop
The strongest case is the gap between the vehicle’s launch ambition and the sales reported later. Le Monde reported in April 2025 that Elon Musk had aimed for 250,000 Cybertrucks a year at the 2023 launch, while reported sales remained below 40,000 by the time of its report. The report excerpt does not specify a precise measurement period or methodology, so these figures should not be treated as an audited annual sales comparison. Le Monde’s April 2025 report is the source for both figures.

Analysts quoted by Le Monde described the excitement around the vehicle as having faded. Those assessments help explain the “flop” label, but do not establish that it is objectively Tesla’s worst-performing product. A reliable ranking would require comparable measures across Tesla’s product history, such as sales shortfalls, financial losses, delays, recalls or cancellations; the available figures do not provide that comparison.

How the launch fell short of expectations
Production timing
Le Monde reported in January 2025 that the Cybertruck entered production about two years later than initially planned. A delay can weaken momentum and complicate a launch, but the available reporting does not establish a complete causal account of the vehicle’s sales performance.

Price and range as reported in January 2025
Le Monde’s January 2025 account put the price above $80,000 and the range at approximately 400 kilometers. These are figures reported at that time, not confirmation of current pricing or specifications. Le Monde’s January 2025 report also covered the delay and recalls.
What the recall record shows
Recall counts depend on the date and should not be presented as a current total without checking current records. Le Monde counted seven Cybertruck recalls by January 2025, involving items such as the wipers, reversing camera and tire-pressure indication. In April 2025, the Associated Press reported an eighth recall in about 15 months: 46,096 model-year 2024–2025 Cybertrucks were affected by a windshield-area panel that could detach while driving. The AP account describes a specific recall, not a complete measure of vehicle reliability. The Associated Press report gives the April 2025 recall details.

If you own a Cybertruck
Check the vehicle identification number (VIN) using Tesla’s recall information page to see whether an open recall applies. Tesla says service for a vehicle included in a recall is free regardless of its age or mileage. Its page lists Cybertruck remedies for items including pedal trim, the wiper motor, sail applique, inverter and cantrail; use the VIN lookup for the vehicle’s current status rather than relying on a dated count.

Is the Cybertruck actually Tesla’s worst flop?
That cannot be established from the cited figures. Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K listed the Cybertruck as in active production in Texas, so “flop” here describes concerns about commercial performance and execution—not a discontinued vehicle. The same filing reported approximately 1,773,000 consumer vehicles produced and approximately 1,789,000 delivered across Tesla in 2024; those totals are company-wide and do not show Cybertruck-specific annual sales. Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K also discusses production-ramp issues elsewhere in the company, but that context does not prove the specific causes of the Cybertruck’s delay or sales results.

The fairest description is that the Cybertruck has faced a conspicuous gap between its stated sales ambition and later reported sales, alongside a delayed launch and a dated series of recalls. Calling it Tesla’s “worst” flop goes beyond what these facts can prove.
