Each symptom has a different check.
Work through the sections below in order. Start with the least disruptive test, then repair the app only if the capture or save path still fails.
Identify the symptom before changing anything
| What you see | Most useful first check | What the check tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S does nothing | Open Snipping Tool from Start and select New | Whether the shortcut is the problem or the app itself is not launching |
| The screen dims, but you cannot complete a selection | Confirm the snip mode and drag a region, or choose window/full-screen mode | Whether capture is waiting for the correct selection action |
| A snip was made, but no app or notification is obvious | Check the Snipping Tool window and paste from the clipboard | Whether capture succeeded despite an unnoticed notification |
| The image exists, but you cannot find the file | Check the Screenshots folder, Snipping Tool save settings, and Save as | Whether the issue is file location or automatic-save behavior |
Microsoft documents Windows + Shift + S as the shortcut that opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact behavior after capture differs from an instant file-save workflow: the snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window for editing, saving, and sharing.
When Windows + Shift + S does nothing
Launch the app directly
- Open Start and type Snipping Tool.
- Open the app and select New.
- Choose a snip mode, then attempt a capture.
If New works but the keyboard shortcut does not, you have confirmed a launch-path problem rather than a general inability to capture. You can use the app’s New button while you continue diagnosing the shortcut.
#1 Best Overall
Check the overlay state
With the overlay open, the screen should change slightly to gray while Snipping Tool waits for your selection. If the overlay appears, the shortcut has launched the capture workflow; continue with the selection checks in the next section instead of repeatedly pressing the keys.
When the screen dims but selection or capture fails
Use the mode that matches the action
In Snipping Tool, select a mode and then choose New. Rectangle and freeform snips require you to select an area. Window and full-screen modes capture differently: a window snip asks you to choose a window, while a full-screen snip captures the display without a drawn rectangle.
- Rectangle: drag from one corner of the required area to the opposite corner.
- Freeform: draw the outline of the area you want.
- Window: select the target window after the screen enters capture mode.
- Full screen: let Snipping Tool capture the entire display.
If a rectangle or freeform selection appears stuck, cancel that attempt and start New again. Then test window or full-screen mode. This separates a selection gesture problem from a broader capture problem.
Look for the result in Snipping Tool
After the selection, check the Snipping Tool window. Microsoft’s documented workflow copies the captured snip there for editing, saving, and sharing. A completion notification can also appear, but the notification is not the only evidence that capture worked.
Test the clipboard
Open an application that accepts images, such as an image editor or a document, and paste. If the image appears, capture succeeded even if you did not notice a notification or the Snipping Tool window. Save the pasted image from that application if you need an immediate file.
When the screenshot is captured but you cannot find the file
Check the Windows 11 default folder
Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions say captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default. Check the Screenshots folder in your Pictures location before assuming the capture failed.
Review Snipping Tool save settings
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select the app’s More menu, then Settings.
- Review the automatic-save behavior and the default folder setting.
The available settings let you change whether captures are saved automatically and where the default folder is located. Labels and options can vary between Windows releases.
Use Save as for a known path
Open the snip in Snipping Tool and select Save as. Choose a folder you can identify, enter a filename, and confirm the file type. This is the reliable test when you are unsure whether automatic saving is enabled or which folder it uses.

Use another Windows shortcut as a low-disruption workaround
Windows provides a separate screenshot path that does not repair Snipping Tool but can get an image while you continue troubleshooting:
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn on supported hardware.
- Open Pictures > Screenshots to look for the resulting image.
- If your device has no PrtScn key, try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar, which Microsoft documents for some devices.
Keyboard layouts and hardware determine whether these combinations are available. If the shortcut works, it confirms Windows can create a screenshot through another path; it does not fix the Snipping Tool application or its settings.
Repair Snipping Tool in Windows settings
Use repair after you have established that the app itself, not merely the shortcut or save location, is failing.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool.
- Select its More menu, then Advanced options.
- Choose Repair when that option is offered.
Repair is the least disruptive app-level recovery because it is the first documented option. If Repair is unavailable or does not solve the problem, Microsoft documents Reset as the next option on the same page. Settings differ by operating-system version, and not every app exposes every option.
What reset changes
Reset is more disruptive than Repair because it returns the app to its default state. Before selecting it, note any Snipping Tool preferences you changed, such as automatic-save behavior or the default folder, so you can check them again afterward.
Reinstall only when your Windows build qualifies
Do not jump straight to reinstalling. Microsoft’s inbox Paint/Snipping Tool uninstall and reinstall instructions apply to Windows 10 version 22H2, build 19045.3758 or later. If you are on an earlier Windows 10 build, verify the current Microsoft instructions for your version instead of assuming the same procedure applies.
- Check your Windows version and build in Settings > System > About.
- If the device meets the stated Windows 10 qualification, follow Microsoft’s current Paint/Snipping Tool reinstall article and its installer choices.
- After reinstalling, open Snipping Tool from Start, select New, and test capture before relying on the keyboard shortcut.
A reinstall is the most involved option in this sequence. It is appropriate only after launch, selection, save-location, Repair, and (where applicable) Reset checks have not restored capture.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely branch to test | Least disruptive action | Escalation |
|---|---|---|---|
| No response from Windows + Shift + S | Shortcut or app launch | Start > Snipping Tool > New | Repair, then Reset if offered |
| Gray overlay, no usable selection | Mode or selection gesture | Retry with the mode that matches the intended capture | Check the Snipping Tool result and clipboard |
| Capture made, no visible notification | Notification was missed | Check the Snipping Tool window and paste into an image-capable app | Use Save as to create a known file |
| File cannot be located | Automatic-save folder or behavior | Pictures > Screenshots, then Snipping Tool Settings | Save as and choose a specific folder |
| Need an image immediately | Snipping Tool remains unavailable | Windows + PrtScn, or Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on some devices | Return to app Repair and qualified reinstall steps |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean website image rather than a desktop-region capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one request. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A cURL request is:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same capture in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, with options for full-page lazy-image loading, element capture by CSS selector, device and viewport settings, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture, usage information, and an OpenAPI specification. Every feature is on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
When to stop and collect more information
If none of these paths works, the available guidance cannot identify the cause on your particular computer. Record your Windows version and build, whether the overlay opens, what happens after you select a region, whether the snip appears in Snipping Tool or the clipboard, and any exact error text. Those details determine the next diagnosis instead of another blind reinstall.
Frequently Asked Questions
What details should I include when asking for further help?
Include your Windows version and build, whether Windows + Shift + S opens the overlay, what happens after selecting an area, whether the result appears in Snipping Tool or the clipboard, and the exact wording of any error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can I tell whether the problem is capture or file saving?
Paste immediately into an image-capable app. If the image pastes, capture worked and the remaining issue is where or whether the file was saved.
