The Pentax 6×7 paired a familiar 35mm-style SLR layout with a much larger medium-format negative. First sold in 1969, the camera family evolved through the 6×7 MLU, Pentax 67 and 67II, with changes to mirror control, electronics, ergonomics and finder options. Its long history and specialist interest are clear; claims that it changed photography forever or that photographers universally remain obsessed go beyond the available evidence.
Why is the Pentax 6×7 so big?
It was built around a 6×7 film frame, not 35mm film. The body kept familiar SLR controls and proportions in spirit: a right-hand shutter release, a film-wind lever, a focal-plane shutter and interchangeable lenses. That made it feel like an oversized 35mm SLR, but it remained a medium-format camera with a substantially larger negative.

Measurements depend on the model and source. David S Young’s history of the system describes the 6×7 image area as approximately 56 × 70 mm and about 4.5 times the area of a 35mm frame. Ricoh’s official 67II specification gives a picture size of 55 × 70 mm. These figures refer to different descriptions and should not be treated as an exact match. Digital Camera World’s history and Ricoh’s 67II specifications document the distinction.
How the Pentax 6×7 generations changed
Asahi Optical developed the design from the mid-1960s, showing a prototype called the Pentax 220 at Photokina in 1966. The first production Pentax 6×7 reached the market in 1969. The family’s later revisions kept the central SLR-style concept while adding features and changing the controls.

| Model | When | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Pentax 6×7 | 1969 | Original production model. |
| Pentax 6×7 MLU | 1976 | Added mirror lock-up, intended to reduce mirror-induced vibration during long exposures and close-up work. |
| Pentax 67 | 1989 | Updated electronics and appearance; the model name was shortened. |
| Pentax 67II | Introduced in 1998 | Improved ergonomics, an LCD and an optional autoexposure prism finder. Digital Camera World reports that production continued until 2009. |
These dates and generation summaries are reported by David S Young in Digital Camera World’s history. The 67II’s AE capability depends on configuration: Ricoh specifies aperture-priority autoexposure with the optional AE Pentaprism Finder 67II, not as a feature of every finder and body combination.
What film does a Pentax 67 use?
For the 67II, Ricoh specifies 120 or 220 roll film. A 120 roll gives 10 exposures; a 220 roll gives 21. The camera’s dual-bayonet lens mount accepts applicable smc PENTAX 67 and smc Takumar 67 lenses, and its finders are interchangeable. Check the individual camera and finder configuration when assessing a used kit; a feature listed for the 67II does not necessarily apply to every version in the family. Ricoh’s official specification page lists these details.

Does a Pentax 6×7 need a battery?
For the 67II, yes: Ricoh specifies two 3V CR-123A lithium batteries. It estimates approximately 500 rolls of 120 or 250 rolls of 220 per set, but that manufacturer figure is not a guarantee for an aged camera or old batteries. Consult the manual for the exact requirements of other generations rather than assuming the 67II specification applies to them. Ricoh lists the 67II battery and life estimates.
What are the 67II’s shutter, flash and size specifications?
Ricoh describes the 67II shutter as an electronically controlled, horizontal-run focal-plane cloth shutter. In auto mode it offers stepless speeds from 1/1000 second to 30 seconds; in manual mode, from 1/1000 second to four seconds, plus bulb. X-sync is 1/30 second. The camera includes a mirror lock-up mechanism.

With the AE Pentaprism Finder 67II fitted and batteries excluded, Ricoh lists dimensions of 185.5 × 151 × 106 mm and a weight of 1,660 g. The finder and battery qualifications matter: these are not body-only dimensions or a weight including batteries. Ricoh’s specification page provides the figures.
Why is the 105mm f/2.4 lens associated with the system?
David S Young identifies the 105mm f/2.4 as the system’s famous standard lens. His account describes its design goal as a fast, reasonably compact lens capable of strong image quality across the large negative. He characterizes its view as narrower than a 90mm lens and notes its usefulness for portraits; that is a description, not a rule for every photographer or subject.

Young’s history says more than 40 lenses were eventually made, ranging from a 35mm fisheye to a 1,000mm mirror lens. It also reports that coatings were upgraded to Asahi’s Super-Multi-Coat standard in 1971 and that the 105mm’s reputation grew with high-resolution film scans in the digital era. These are historical claims in that article; Ricoh’s specification independently confirms that smc PENTAX 67 and smc Takumar 67 lenses are applicable to the 67II. David S Young’s history and Ricoh’s lens information cover these points.

What to consider when choosing a version
There is no single best generation for every use. Compare the specific body, finder, intended shooting style and service history rather than choosing by model name alone. The 67II offers later ergonomics and optional metering features, while the MLU added a mirror lock-up mechanism to the earlier design.

David S Young describes the original as rugged and reliable, while noting early film-transport issues that he believes would have been addressed at the time. He also cautions that the 67II’s additional electronics could make repair more complicated if a component fails. These are his assessments, not the result of an independent reliability study. Because the camera is larger than illustrations may suggest, he recommends seeing a candidate in person.
Asahi Pentax’s downloads page hosts manuals and brochures and says it provides non-OEM service, repair and restoration for the 6×7, 6x7MLU, 67 and 67II. That is one specialist service route, but availability and repair outcomes will depend on region and the individual camera.
What the Pentax 6×7’s legacy can—and cannot—show
The documented story is distinctive enough without treating a dramatic headline as a measured verdict: an SLR-style camera made for a much larger 6×7 image, introduced in 1969 and carried through several generations to the 67II. The available sources establish its design, chronology, lens system and ongoing specialist interest. They do not provide sales, ownership or search-volume data that would prove it changed medium-format photography forever or that photographers are universally still obsessed with it.
