On a Mac, the emoji picker is Apple’s Character Viewer. If Control–Command–Space does nothing, first try Edit > Emoji & Symbols in the app where you are typing. That menu route separates a shortcut problem from a broader Character Viewer or text-entry problem.
Apple also supports opening Character Viewer with Fn–E (or Globe–E on keyboards with a Globe key) and from the menu-bar Input menu. Work through those routes in order, compare more than one app, and check the Fn/Globe assignment before assuming macOS needs a reset.

What the “emoji picker” is on macOS
Apple calls the panel Character Viewer, not a separate emoji utility. It lets you search for and insert emoji, symbols, accented letters, and characters from other languages into a focused text field. That explains why an invocation can appear to fail when no app control is ready to accept text: the viewer may open only in a suitable text-entry context, and insertion depends on that context.
The panel is available through several access routes. A failure of one route does not by itself prove that Character Viewer is broken throughout macOS. Keyboard shortcuts can behave differently from one app to another, so the app and field in which you test are part of the diagnosis.

Use this quick diagnostic order
Follow these checks without changing system files or installing a replacement utility:
- Focus a text field in the app you want to use, then press Control–Command–Space.
- If there is no panel, open the app’s menu bar and choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols.
- Try the same two routes in a different app or a different text field.
- Test Fn–E, or Globe–E on a keyboard with a Globe key.
- In Keyboard settings, inspect what the Fn or Globe key is configured to do.
- Turn on the menu-bar Input menu and open Character Viewer from there.
The result at each step tells you which access path is failing. A menu command that works in one app while the shortcut fails points toward a shortcut or app-context issue, not evidence of a universal macOS failure.
Access-route comparison
These are the supported ways to open Character Viewer described in Apple’s user guidance. There is no published reliability ranking, so choose the route that remains available in your current app and keyboard setup.

| Route | How to invoke it | Text-field focus needed? | What a failure tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard shortcut | Control–Command–Space | Use it while a text-entry control is focused | Could be app-dependent or related to the shortcut context |
| App menu | Edit > Emoji & Symbols | The command needs an appropriate insertion context | If missing or inactive, the current app or field may not support insertion |
| Fn/Globe shortcut | Fn–E or Globe–E | Use it in a text-entry context | Check the Fn/Globe action if the key does something else |
| Input menu | Open Character Viewer from the menu-bar Input menu | Opening can be done from the desktop; insertion still needs a suitable field | Provides a menu-based fallback while shortcut behavior is investigated |
Fix 1: verify the shortcut in a real text-entry field
Click inside a field that accepts ordinary text before pressing Control–Command–Space. The shortcut is easy to test in a document editor or another control where you can type, but the important condition is focus: the insertion target must be active.

- Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Watch for a panel rather than an inserted character. Character Viewer normally opens as a browsing and search interface; you then select an emoji or symbol to insert it. If nothing appears, press the combination once with the field visibly focused, rather than holding the keys while switching windows.
Do not conclude that the shortcut is globally broken from one application. Apple specifically cautions that shortcuts may work in one app and not another. Record the app name and the kind of field you tested; that distinction is useful when the menu route behaves differently.
Fix 2: use Edit > Emoji & Symbols
With the target field active, open the application’s menu bar and choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols. This invokes Character Viewer without relying on the keyboard chord.

- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It features an extended layout, with document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys, which are great for gaming.
- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
If the menu command opens Character Viewer and a selected character appears in the field, the viewer and insertion path are functioning. Continue using the menu command or investigate why the shortcut is intercepted or unsupported in that particular app.
Fix 3: compare apps and fields to isolate an app-specific problem
Repeat the shortcut and menu tests in at least one other application. Use a normal editable text field rather than a control designed only for numbers, passwords, or special input. You are comparing behavior, not trying to prove a specific underlying cause.
- Works in another app: treat the original result as app-specific evidence. Check whether that app exposes Edit > Emoji & Symbols and whether the cursor is in an editable field.
- Menu works but the shortcut does not in multiple apps: the Character Viewer access path is available; focus on the keyboard shortcut or key assignment rather than looking for a universal viewer reset.
- Neither shortcut nor menu works anywhere: continue with the Fn/Globe and Input-menu routes. Note your macOS release, keyboard type, apps tested, and which command was unavailable.
Apple’s guidance establishes that shortcut behavior can vary by app. It does not identify one universal cause for every failure pattern, so describe the scope you actually observed.
Fix 4: check the Fn or Globe key assignment
The Fn or Globe key is configurable on supported Macs and keyboards. If pressing it produces a different action—or nothing that opens Character Viewer—inspect its assignment:

- Broad Compatibility: Able to work with Apple and compatible with Windows PC operating systems
- Full Sized Extended Keyboard: Easy access to media with 20 Apple shortcut keys (cut/copy/paste, iTunes control, Volume up/down, etc.) and multimedia shortcuts for Windows PC. Also, contains a ten-key numeric keypad for easy data entry.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- Find the menu labeled Press fn key to or, on systems exposing that wording, Press Globe key to.
- Choose Show Emoji & Symbols if that option is offered and you want the key to open Character Viewer.
- Return to a text-entry field and test Fn–E or Globe–E.
The exact label and available choices can vary between macOS releases and keyboard configurations. If the “Show Emoji & Symbols” choice is not present, do not treat its absence as proof of a damaged installation; use the Control–Command shortcut, app menu, or Input menu instead.
Fix 5: enable the menu-bar Input menu
The Input menu gives you a desktop-level way to reach Character Viewer while you investigate keyboard behavior. Enable it in current macOS System Settings as follows:
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Choose Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, click Edit.
- Select Show Input menu in menu bar, then confirm the change.
- Use the new Input menu in the menu bar to open Character Viewer.
This route is useful when a physical key or keyboard chord is inconvenient. Opening the viewer from the desktop does not remove the requirement for a compatible text field when you actually insert a character; switch to the intended field before selecting the emoji or symbol.
What each symptom means—and what it does not prove
The shortcut does nothing in one app
First check focus and try Edit > Emoji & Symbols in that app. Then compare a second app. A difference between applications is consistent with Apple’s warning that shortcuts may vary by app; it is not proof that a particular plug-in, process, or file is responsible.

The menu command is unavailable
The current app or control may not provide a suitable text-entry context. Test a conventional editable field elsewhere. Avoid treating a dimmed command as evidence that Character Viewer is missing from macOS.
Fn or Globe opens something else
Inspect the Press fn key to or Press Globe key to setting under System Settings > Keyboard. Select Show Emoji & Symbols only if that choice is available and matches your intended behavior.
No route opens Character Viewer anywhere
Use the Input-menu steps, record the macOS version and keyboard details, and identify whether the failure affects every app or only particular fields. Apple’s documented guidance covers access routes and settings; it does not promise a universal reset for a viewer that will not open.

Keyboard and macOS details to record
Before escalating the problem, write down:
- The macOS version and whether you are using a built-in or external keyboard.
- Whether the keyboard has an Fn key, a Globe key, or both.
- The exact shortcut you pressed and whether a panel appeared.
- The app and field used for each test.
- Whether Edit > Emoji & Symbols was present, active, and able to insert a character.
- Whether the Input menu was visible and whether Character Viewer opened from it.
These details keep the report precise. Setting names and locations can shift between macOS releases, so quote the label you actually see rather than assuming every Mac presents the same wording.
What not to do first
There is no Apple-documented universal “emoji picker reset” in the guidance covering these access methods. Avoid deleting preference files, terminating unidentified system processes, or installing a third-party picker as a first response. Those actions are not established fixes for the symptom described here and can introduce new variables.
Likewise, replacing a keyboard is not a general solution. Consider a hardware diagnosis only if specific keys fail in other tasks as well; a Character Viewer shortcut failure alone does not establish a physical keyboard fault.
A practical decision tree
- Need an immediate way to insert an emoji? Open a text field and choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols. If that is unavailable, enable the Input menu and open Character Viewer there.
- Does the menu route work? Use it while you investigate the shortcut, and compare the shortcut in another app.
- Does another app work? Keep the diagnosis app-specific; check that app’s editable field and menu support rather than changing system-wide settings.
- Does Fn/Globe behave differently? Review its Keyboard setting and select Show Emoji & Symbols when offered.
- Does no route work in any tested context? Preserve the version, keyboard, app, and menu observations for support. The available evidence does not justify claiming a single cause or a guaranteed reset.
Bottom line
Start with Control–Command–Space in a focused text field, then use Edit > Emoji & Symbols to separate shortcut behavior from Character Viewer access. Compare apps, verify the Fn/Globe assignment, and enable the Input menu as a fallback. Because Apple documents multiple routes but no universal failure cause or reset, the most accurate fix depends on which route and which app actually fail.
