Why the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s One UI taskbar can fight your Home gesture

Samsung’s One UI taskbar is designed to make multitasking on the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold 8 faster. The trouble appears when you hide it and use gesture navigation: the taskbar’s reveal gesture and Android’s Home gesture both begin with a swipe from the bottom edge. Instead of exposing the app shortcuts, the phone can minimize the current app or open Recents.

That does not make the taskbar universally broken. The conflict depends on how navigation and taskbar visibility are configured, and it is less apparent when the bar stays visible or when you switch to navigation buttons.

What is going wrong?

On the unfolded Fold 8, a hidden taskbar is summoned with an upward swipe from the bottom of the screen. One UI’s gesture navigation uses the same edge for Home, while an upward swipe followed by a hold opens the recent-apps view on One UI 6.1 and later. Those overlapping gestures can be interpreted together.

In practical use, a swipe intended to reveal the taskbar may send the current app to the Home screen or bring up Recents. That is especially disruptive when the taskbar is being used as the quickest way to launch a second app beside the one already open.

  • [Precise Cutout]: Precise Cutout for easy access to all functions button without removing the case

SamMobile senior editor Mihai Matei described the One UI 9.0 implementation on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as “abysmal.” That is an opinion rather than a measured failure rate; no independent user study or benchmark establishes how often the conflict occurs.

The settings that determine the experience

Samsung puts the relevant controls under Settings > Display > Navigation bar on the unfolded phone. The exact choices create different trade-offs between screen cleanliness and predictable navigation.

Configuration What happens Main trade-off
Gesture navigation + hidden taskbar Bottom-edge gestures can compete with the taskbar-reveal swipe, potentially invoking Home or Recents. Maximum unobstructed space and on-demand taskbar access, but the least predictable interaction.
Gesture navigation + taskbar kept visible The shortcuts remain available without a bottom-edge reveal gesture. More reliable multitasking, at the cost of a persistent bar on screen.
Three-button navigation + hidden taskbar Home and Recents use dedicated buttons, leaving the bottom-edge swipe for taskbar access. More consistent behavior, but less of the edge-to-edge gesture feel.
Three-button navigation + visible taskbar Both navigation controls and taskbar shortcuts remain continuously available. Most explicit control, with the greatest amount of interface chrome.

How to make the taskbar predictable

Option 1: Keep the taskbar visible

If your priority is launching a second app quickly, avoid the conflicting reveal gesture. In the taskbar settings, choose the option that keeps the taskbar visible. You can then tap an app shortcut directly instead of swiping from the bottom edge. This is the simplest fix for users who want to retain gesture navigation.

Option 2: Switch to navigation buttons

  1. Open the unfolded phone’s Settings.
  2. Tap Display, then Navigation bar.
  3. Select the navigation-button layout instead of gesture navigation.
  4. Test the hidden taskbar by swiping up from the bottom edge.

With dedicated Home and Recents buttons, the bottom swipe no longer has to perform the same navigation job. The phone gives up gesture-only navigation, but taskbar access becomes easier to distinguish from leaving an app.

Option 3: Hide and reveal the bar deliberately

A Samsung Community quick tip describes a touch-and-hold method: touch and hold an empty area of the taskbar to hide it, then touch and hold the bottom edge to reveal it again. This is different from a quick swipe and may help when you want the bar out of the way temporarily. Because the behavior can vary by context, test it on the Home screen and inside the apps you use most.

Why full-screen apps can behave differently

Not every app presents the same bottom-edge behavior. In true full-screen apps, Android can reveal system UI in stages. The first gesture may expose system controls, with a subsequent gesture completing navigation or another system action. That staged handling can make the taskbar appear to work differently from an ordinary app.

If the taskbar seems inconsistent only in a game, video player or other immersive app, compare it with a standard app before changing every navigation setting. The difference may come from the app’s full-screen system-UI policy rather than a separate Fold-specific fault.

Choosing the least frustrating setup

Choose hidden taskbar plus gestures if

  • You value a completely clear lower edge more than instant multitasking.
  • You can tolerate occasionally returning Home or opening Recents while learning the gesture timing.
  • Your main apps are not immersive full-screen experiences.

Choose a visible taskbar plus gestures if

  • You frequently open a second app from the unfolded screen.
  • You want to keep gesture navigation but remove the reveal-swipe conflict.
  • A persistent strip is less distracting than an unreliable command.

Choose buttons if

  • Predictable Home and Recents actions matter more than gesture minimalism.
  • You regularly use a hidden taskbar and want its bottom-edge gesture separated from navigation.
  • You prefer visible controls while switching between two-pane or multi-window tasks.

What this criticism does—and does not—show

The complaint is about Samsung’s One UI taskbar implementation on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, not proof that every Fold owner experiences the same failure. The conflict is configuration-dependent, and Samsung’s own settings documentation confirms that taskbar positioning and navigation options are handled through the phone’s Display controls.

There is also no published statistic establishing a failure percentage or showing that most owners dislike the feature. The defensible conclusion is narrower: hidden-taskbar mode and gesture navigation assign important actions to the same bottom edge, so some users will find the interaction unreliable. Keeping the taskbar visible or using navigation buttons removes the central ambiguity.
