Those conditions are especially valuable at the Chajnantor plateau, where ALMA observes millimeter and submillimeter radiation that water vapor would otherwise absorb. Optical and infrared observatories at sites such as Paranal and Cerro Armazones benefit from the same desert environment, but they optimize additional factors such as atmospheric seeing, turbulence, cloud cover, and operating conditions. The Atacama is not one uniform observing site; its advantage comes from matching a particular location and climate to a telescope’s wavelength and engineering needs.
Why the Atacama’s climate suits astronomy
Every ground-based telescope looks through Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere can blur images, absorb radiation, emit its own glow, scatter light, and introduce radio noise. A good observatory site minimizes those effects for the wavelengths it is designed to detect.

The Atacama Desert does not eliminate the atmosphere, but parts of it provide an unusually favorable combination:
- High elevation: less atmosphere lies above the instrument.
- Extreme aridity: less water vapor absorbs incoming radiation.
- Few clouds: more scheduled time can be used for observations.
- Dark, remote surroundings: visible and infrared backgrounds are lower, and radio interference is reduced.
- Suitable terrain: isolated plateaus can host large facilities away from cities and industrial activity.
These properties are complementary rather than interchangeable. A high site can still have poor turbulence, and a dark site is not automatically dry enough for submillimeter work. Observatory planners therefore evaluate a complete set of atmospheric and operational measurements.

Dry air opens millimeter and submillimeter astronomy
Water vapor is an atmospheric filter
Water vapor absorbs portions of millimeter and submillimeter radiation. Those wavelengths carry information about cold molecular clouds, star-forming regions, dust, protoplanetary disks, galaxies, and the chemical composition of interstellar space. At a humid site, the signal can be weakened before it reaches an antenna, while changing water vapor can also disturb the timing precision needed when several antennas work together as an interferometer.
The Chajnantor plateau is valuable because its air is exceptionally dry. The ALMA Science Portal reports that precipitable water vapor at the ALMA site is below 1 millimeter more than 50% of the time from April through December. During the five best months, May through September, it is below 0.5 millimeter for more than 25% of the time. Those percentages describe the conditions reported on the portal; the retrieved page does not state a publication year for the figures.
“Precipitable water vapor” is the depth of liquid water that would result if all the water vapor in a vertical atmospheric column condensed. A smaller value generally means better transmission at the short millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths ALMA uses. Astronomers can schedule the most demanding bands for the driest periods rather than treating every night as equivalent.

ALMA’s antenna operations site is approximately 5,000 meters above sea level. ESO describes the facility’s elevation range as 4,576 to 5,044 meters, with most of the array above 5,000 meters. At that height, the antennas look through less air than they would from a lowland observatory, reducing the total column of water vapor and other absorbing material.
The high array site is separate from ALMA’s support facility, which is approximately 2,900 meters above sea level. Personnel, maintenance, and many routine operations can be based at the lower site while the antennas remain in the exceptionally dry upper environment. This separation illustrates why “ALMA is in the Atacama” is shorthand for a network of locations rather than one identical elevation.

How elevation helps—and what it cannot guarantee
Less atmosphere above the telescope
Elevation improves transmission by reducing the amount of atmosphere above an instrument. It can also place a telescope above some low-level moisture and weather. For millimeter observations, the reduction in water vapor is particularly important; for optical observations, a thinner atmospheric column can reduce extinction and scattering.
Altitude is not a single quality score. Wind, temperature gradients, local terrain, and atmospheric layers can create turbulence that degrades image sharpness even at a high site. Engineers therefore measure “seeing,” the apparent blurring caused by turbulence, rather than assuming that elevation alone produces sharp images.
Human and engineering trade-offs
Very high sites are difficult working environments. Thin air, cold temperatures, strong ultraviolet exposure, dust, and limited access complicate construction, servicing, and day-to-day operations. ALMA’s lower support facility helps manage those constraints while preserving the scientific benefit of placing the antennas on Chajnantor. Site selection is consequently a balance between atmospheric performance and the ability to build, maintain, and safely operate a facility.
Cloud cover and usable observing time
Clouds block optical and infrared light and can add water vapor that is harmful at longer wavelengths. A desert climate with scant clouds offers more opportunities to observe and makes scheduling less vulnerable to weather interruptions. The advantage is statistical, not absolute: clouds still occur, and individual observatory sites have their own seasonal patterns.
Official descriptions of the Atacama emphasize scant clouds rather than a claim that the whole desert is permanently cloudless. Professional observatories use long-term measurements of cloud fraction, humidity, wind, and temperature to decide when a location is suitable for a particular instrument. They also track short-term conditions so observations can be scheduled around changing atmospheric transparency.

Dark skies protect optical and infrared observations
Natural darkness is a scientific resource
Optical telescopes detect faint visible light from stars, galaxies, nebulae, and planets. Artificial lighting brightens the sky background, reducing contrast and making faint objects harder to measure. Infrared instruments face related problems: warm surroundings and atmospheric emission can overwhelm a weak astronomical signal.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Atacama’s remote location places major observatories far from dense urban lighting. ESO says that, at its Chilean sites, a clear moonless night can be dark enough for a person to see a shadow cast by the Milky Way alone. That description conveys the unusually low natural and artificial background, although moonlight, airglow, zodiacal light, and local activity still affect observations.
Protection must continue after construction
Darkness is not guaranteed simply because an observatory begins in an empty landscape. New roads, settlements, industrial lighting, vehicle traffic, and poorly shielded lamps can increase the background over time. Observatory operators therefore work with authorities and neighboring communities to limit upward light and protect the night sky. The benefit is long term only if the surrounding region remains carefully managed.
Radio quiet helps sensitive antennas
Radio astronomy measures natural signals that can be many orders of magnitude weaker than transmissions from human technology. Mobile networks, radar, satellites, microwave links, and electrical equipment can enter an antenna’s band or create interference in nearby frequencies. Remote desert locations have fewer transmitters and less urban infrastructure, reducing the radio-frequency environment that observatories must control.
ALMA’s official description lists scarce radio interference alongside dryness, high altitude, scant clouds, and low light pollution as reasons the Atacama is a privileged astronomical location. Radio quiet is not the same as silence: aircraft, satellites, maintenance equipment, and future development still require monitoring and mitigation. The practical advantage is that a remote site starts with fewer sources to manage.

Different Atacama sites serve different telescopes
It is misleading to rank the whole desert as though every ridge had identical conditions. The best location depends on wavelength, instrument design, atmospheric stability, access, and the ability to operate alongside other facilities.
| Location or facility | Main observing emphasis | Elevation reported by the source | Conditions and selection priorities |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALMA antenna operations site on Chajnantor | Millimeter and submillimeter astronomy | Approximately 5,000 m; ESO gives a facility range of 4,576–5,044 m, with most of the array above 5,000 m | Exceptionally low precipitable water vapor, reduced atmospheric absorption, phase stability, sparse clouds, darkness, and low radio interference |
| ALMA support facility | Operations, personnel, maintenance, and logistics supporting the array | Approximately 2,900 m | Lower-elevation base that makes routine work more practical while the antennas remain on the high plateau |
| Paranal Observatory | Optical and infrared observations | 2,635.43 m | Dark skies and atmospheric performance assessed for optical and infrared instruments; conditions are not identical to Chajnantor |
| Cerro Armazones | Optical and infrared observatory development and operations | 3,046 m | ESO site selection considers clear nights, infrared properties, precipitable water vapor, seeing, turbulence, and operational synergy with nearby facilities |
The elevations and criteria in the table describe the named locations, not a single average for the Atacama Desert. Paranal and Armazones are lower than the ALMA antenna site, but optical and infrared telescopes do not require exactly the same atmospheric profile as a submillimeter array. Their evaluations place greater emphasis on image sharpness, infrared transparency, cloud statistics, and the ability to operate large optical systems reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Seeing and turbulence determine image sharpness
For an optical telescope, a dark sky is not enough. Turbulent layers with different temperatures and wind speeds bend light by changing the atmosphere’s refractive index. The result is “seeing”: stars appear as larger, less precise spots than they would through a perfectly still atmosphere. Adaptive-optics systems can correct some turbulence, but they work best when the site already has favorable and well-characterized conditions.
ESO’s criteria for Cerro Armazones explicitly include seeing and atmospheric turbulence, alongside clear nights, infrared behavior, precipitable water vapor, and operational synergy. This list shows why a site survey takes years of measurements rather than relying on a desert label. Two nearby peaks can have different wind exposure, inversion layers, or local turbulence.
Why observatories cluster in northern Chile
Once a region demonstrates favorable conditions, several facilities can share roads, power systems, communications, weather monitoring, engineering expertise, and scientific infrastructure. Nearby observatories can also complement one another: an optical telescope may follow up a target first detected at millimeter wavelengths, while coordinated facilities provide observations across the electromagnetic spectrum.
Best Value
Operational synergy was one of the factors ESO considered for Armazones. Clustering does not mean every telescope has the same mission. It means that a proven environment and an established support network can reduce the cost and complexity of building additional world-class instruments without sacrificing the atmospheric qualities that attracted the first observatories.
What the Atacama enables scientists to observe
Cold gas and the origins of stars
Millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths reveal rotational emission from molecules and thermal radiation from cold dust. These tracers expose dense clouds where stars form, disks around young stars, and the reservoirs of material that optical light cannot easily penetrate. Dry conditions at Chajnantor make those faint signals more accessible from the ground.
Galaxies across cosmic history
Submillimeter observations can identify dusty star-forming galaxies whose visible light is heavily obscured. Spectral lines measured by an interferometer can provide redshifts, velocities, temperatures, and chemical information. Combining those data with optical or infrared images from other Chilean facilities produces a more complete view than any one wavelength can provide.

Sharp visible and infrared images
At optical and infrared sites, dark skies and good seeing improve measurements of faint galaxies, stellar populations, exoplanet hosts, planetary atmospheres, and transient events. Infrared instruments also benefit from low water vapor and low thermal background, although each wavelength band has its own requirements.
Limits, risks, and misconceptions
“The entire desert is perfect” is too broad
The Atacama is a large region, and atmospheric conditions vary with elevation, season, terrain, and distance from the coast. A statement about ALMA’s water vapor statistics does not automatically apply to Paranal, Armazones, or every location in the desert. Site-specific monitoring remains essential.
There is no universal clear-night number
Clear-night percentages depend on the exact site, definition of “clear,” time period, and observing wavelength. The official information supporting this article establishes the advantages of scant clouds and high observing availability without supplying one universal annual count for the entire Atacama.
Climate and development can change site quality
Climate conditions matter especially for millimeter radio astronomy, where small increases in atmospheric moisture can reduce transmission. Light pollution and radio emissions can also grow as infrastructure expands. Protecting the region therefore involves environmental monitoring, lighting controls, radio-frequency management, and long-term cooperation among observatories, authorities, and local communities.

How astronomers decide whether a site is suitable
- Define the wavelength and science goal. A submillimeter array prioritizes water vapor and phase stability; an optical telescope gives greater weight to seeing, cloud cover, and sky brightness.
- Measure the atmosphere over long periods. Teams record precipitable water vapor, humidity, temperature, wind, cloud fraction, seeing, and turbulence rather than relying on short-term impressions.
- Map human-made interference. Optical surveys assess light pollution, while radio facilities inventory transmitters, radar, satellites, and electrical equipment.
- Test terrain and operations. Roads, power, communications, seismic conditions, construction space, maintenance logistics, and worker safety determine whether excellent atmospheric data can be turned into a functioning observatory.
- Plan for future protection. A site must remain dark and radio quiet as nearby communities and industries change.
The bottom line
The Atacama is one of the world’s best astronomy regions because it combines several scarce conditions instead of relying on one record-breaking statistic. High, dry air is decisive for ALMA’s millimeter and submillimeter observations; remote darkness and low radio interference protect faint signals; and selected peaks provide the seeing, infrared transparency, cloud conditions, and infrastructure required by optical and infrared observatories. The strongest claim is therefore a precise one: particular Atacama sites are exceptionally well matched to particular telescopes, and their value depends on preserving those atmospheric and environmental advantages.
