Agentic AI could help justify a vast expansion of computing infrastructure, but the boom does not literally depend on agents alone. Multistep tasks can trigger repeated model and tool use, increasing inference demand; whether adoption and revenue grow enough to pay for the buildout remains uncertain.
What makes AI agentic—and why does that matter for computing?
A conventional chatbot exchange can end after one answer. An agent is designed to carry out a sequence of tasks, potentially consulting a model repeatedly and using software tools along the way. Goldman Sachs Research analyst Jim Schneider describes the distinction as systems that do not just answer “tell me about this, tell me about that,” but also “perform a sequence of tasks—‘go do this and go do that.’” (Goldman Sachs Research, May 20, 2026.)
Each model call consumes inference compute. A workflow that plans, searches, checks results, and revises an answer can therefore require more calls than a single prompt. Tool use does not automatically mean every step invokes a large model, and efficient systems may limit unnecessary calls, but successful agent workflows create a plausible route to more inference workload per task.
Gartner analyst Hardeep Singh links the demand shift to production use: “As organizations shift from model development to production-scale deployment, fine-tuned and domain-specific models (DSMs) are increasingly integrated into customer-facing and operational systems, requiring continuous, real-time execution rather than periodic training.” (Gartner, August 10, 2026.) Agents are one possible source of that execution demand, alongside other AI applications.

What do infrastructure forecasts actually show?
The figures below describe different markets and evidence types. Gartner’s AI-optimized IaaS forecast is a narrower cloud-infrastructure category; Gartner’s worldwide AI spending forecast is much broader. TrendForce’s capex estimate covers the named companies’ overall capital expenditure, not spending exclusively on AI.

Gartner attributes the growth in AI-optimized IaaS to both model training and operational deployment across enterprise applications and workflows. Its figures therefore support a shift toward inference, not a conclusion that agents alone explain the infrastructure buildout. TrendForce’s outlook also describes investment extending across GPU clusters, custom chips, networking, memory, cooling, and power infrastructure—not just servers.

For broader context, Gartner forecasts $2.670 trillion in worldwide AI spending in 2026, including $1.484 trillion in AI infrastructure, and separately forecasts $29.219 billion for AI agents and assistants. Gartner says its current agent-and-assistant forecast separates cross-functional agents and assistants from AI software and adds consumer agents and assistants. These broad spending categories are not interchangeable with AI-optimized IaaS and should not be added together as if they measured one market. (Gartner, September 16, 2026.)
How much extra demand could agents create?
The demand case
Goldman Sachs Research modeled monthly token consumption rising 24-fold to 120 quadrillion tokens by 2030 as consumer and enterprise agents are adopted. This is a projection for agent adoption, not a measurement of current usage or a guaranteed outcome. It illustrates how repeated steps at large scale could raise inference demand if people and organizations use agents frequently. (Goldman Sachs Research, May 20, 2026.)

The adoption friction
Consumer agents may be easier to try than enterprise systems that must be tested, integrated with existing software, documented, and made compliant with organizational rules. Schneider says enterprise use may lag for these reasons. A demonstration that completes a task is not by itself evidence of dependable, repeated production use; deployment and sustained usage determine whether the expected workload materializes.
Can the spending produce adequate returns?
More inference demand can support infrastructure utilization, but utilization is only one part of the economics. Providers also have to cover the cost of building and operating capacity, and the businesses deploying agents need enough value from the completed work to keep using them. Goldman Sachs Research reports that investors are questioning the sustainability of capex as spending compresses hyperscalers’ free cash flow.

Schneider says inference cost per token is declining by 60%–70% annually. That is a figure reported in the Goldman Sachs Research interview, not an independently verified industry-wide measurement. Lower unit costs could make more agent use affordable, but the interview’s projected improvement in margins is an outlook, not proof that future returns will exceed the cost of investment.

The useful question is not simply whether companies announce agents or build data centers. Look for evidence that workload, deployment, and economics are advancing together:

- Workload mix: Is production inference taking a larger role relative to model training? Gartner’s forecast points in that direction for AI-optimized IaaS, but it is a forecast rather than a realized result.
- Deployment depth: Are agents being used repeatedly in operational workflows, or are they still mostly pilots and demonstrations? Enterprise integration, testing, and compliance can slow the transition.
- Infrastructure utilization: Is new capacity being put to work across compute, networking, memory, cooling, and power, rather than judged only by announced spending?
- Payoff after costs: Do providers and customers show that lower inference costs and useful automation translate into durable cash flow, after capital and operating expenses?
These tests also keep the agent hypothesis in proportion. Training, non-agentic AI applications, and broader cloud demand can all contribute to infrastructure needs. Gartner distinguished vice president analyst John-David Lovelock called the buildout “the largest infrastructure project humanity has even undertaken”; that is Gartner’s characterization, not an independently measured comparison. So, does the boom depend on agentic AI?
Agents offer a credible demand mechanism: multistep work can generate repeated inference, and forecasts anticipate a growing inference role in AI-optimized cloud infrastructure. But the available figures do not establish that agents are already responsible for the overall capex cycle, or that projected use will deliver sufficient returns. The investment thesis depends on broader AI demand as well as agents—and, ultimately, on whether customers adopt these systems at scale and find them valuable enough to sustain the cost.
