Why the Add to Calendar Option Is Missing from Google AI Overviews (and What to Use Instead)

Google does not currently document an “Add to calendar” button inside AI Overviews. AI Overviews are Search responses designed to summarize information and link to websites. Google documents calendar creation separately in Gemini Apps, Gmail and, on eligible smart displays, Google Assistant. If you cannot find the control, first identify which Google product and screen you are using; instructions for one surface do not explain another.

What Google AI Overviews actually provide

AI Overviews appear at the top of some Google Search results when Google’s systems judge an overview useful for the query. Google’s May 20, 2025 announcement described them as answers with prominent web links, follow-up questions and a path into AI Mode. The announcement did not describe creating a calendar event from the overview itself.

Google Vice President of Product Management for Search Hema Budaraju summarized the design this way: “They’ll appear in Search when our systems determine they’ll be most helpful, featuring prominent web links so people can easily learn more.” That description matters because an overview is a Search interface, not a universal container for every action available in other Google apps.

Google said in that 2025 rollout announcement that AI Overviews were expanding to more than 200 countries and territories and over 40 languages. That is a rollout figure, not a promise that every account, language or query will show the same controls. It also does not establish that calendar actions are supported in an individual overview.

First, identify the surface where the option is missing

The wording “Google AI Overviews” is often used for several different experiences. Check the app name, address bar or device before changing settings. The following surfaces have different triggers and capabilities.

Surface What starts the workflow What Google documents Important limits or eligibility
Google Search AI Overview A Search query that qualifies for an overview Summary text, links to relevant websites, follow-up questions and transitions into AI Mode No documented “Add to calendar” control in the reviewed Google materials
Gemini Apps An explicit request to create an event Calendar event creation after sign-in, with Keep Activity enabled and Google Workspace connected for Google Calendar Events go to the default calendar unless you specify another; Gemini Apps cannot add or invite guests
Gmail Event information detected in an email An “Add to calendar” button above the message and event creation from the message The button depends on Gmail recognizing usable event details
Google Assistant on supported smart displays An event card or calendar request on the device Calendar actions associated with event cards Google says AI-supported actions are currently limited to English, the United States and users aged 18 or older

Because these are separate products, a missing button in Search cannot be diagnosed by enabling a Gmail preference, and a Gmail problem cannot be fixed by instructions intended for Gemini.

If you are looking at a Search AI Overview

What the missing button means

On the evidence Google publishes, the absence of an “Add to calendar” control in an AI Overview is not proof that a setting is disabled or that Google removed a feature from your account. Google’s AI Overview documentation describes links and exploration, but does not list calendar-event creation as an available action. The root cause for a particular account therefore remains unknown unless Google documents a change for that exact Search experience.

  • An Ideal Present Choice: This desk calendar is not only a great tool for yourself but also a thoughtful gift for family, friends, or colleagues. It helps them stay organized and work efficiently throughout the new year—making it a practical and meaningful present for any occasion.

Use the cited event source

  1. Read the overview and open the result that contains the authoritative event details, such as the organizer’s page, venue listing or official schedule.
  2. Check the date, start and end times, time zone, venue and cancellation information on that source. A generated summary can omit details that are essential to a correct calendar entry.
  3. Open Google Calendar in a separate tab or app and create the event manually, or copy the details into Gemini Apps using the documented event workflow below.
  4. After saving, verify the event in the calendar you actually use. If you have multiple calendars, confirm which one is selected before relying on reminders or invitations.

Do not treat an overview’s text as a calendar invitation. A link to an event page is evidence to review; it is not the same as an event object saved to your account.

Use Gemini Apps when you want Google to create the event

Complete the documented setup

  1. Open Gemini Apps and sign in to the Google Account that owns the calendar.
  2. Confirm that Keep Activity is enabled. Google lists this as a requirement for the calendar action.
  3. For Google Calendar access, connect Google Workspace in Gemini’s connected-app settings. A connection to another service does not substitute for the Workspace connection Google specifies.
  4. Start a new conversation and provide the event’s title, date, start time, end time, time zone and location or description when those details matter.

Use an explicit calendar request

Google’s Gemini Apps instructions give two supported phrasings: Add this to my calendar or @Google Calendar add this event. You can combine the command with the event details, for example:

Add this to my calendar: dentist appointment, 14 November 2026, 10:00–11:00 a.m. UTC, 12 High Street.

Review the proposed event before accepting it. Google says the event is added to your default calendar unless you name another calendar. After creation, Gemini provides an undo notification or an event link, allowing you to reverse the action or inspect the saved entry.

Know what Gemini cannot do

  • Gemini Apps cannot add guests or send invitations as part of this documented action.
  • Some fields, including location or description, cannot be edited in an existing event through the documented Gemini workflow. Edit those fields directly in Google Calendar if they are wrong.
  • A successful response from Gemini is not a substitute for checking the calendar entry, especially when the prompt omitted a time zone or when the account has several calendars.

When the problem is actually in Gmail

When Gmail shows “Add to calendar”

Google says Gmail can place an “Add to calendar” button above an email when it detects event information in the message. The trigger is the content of the email, not an AI Overview. Dates, times and recognizable event wording help Gmail identify a potential event, but Google does not promise a button for every message that mentions a meeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the individual message in Gmail rather than relying on a notification preview or conversation list.
  2. Look above the message body for the “Add to calendar” control.
  3. Select it, review the proposed title, date, time, time zone and calendar, then save.
  4. If the details are incomplete or incorrect, create or edit the event directly in Google Calendar.

If the button disappeared from Gmail

First check whether the email still contains clear event details and whether you are viewing the full message. A forwarded, truncated or heavily formatted message may no longer expose the information Gmail needs to detect an event.

A Google Calendar Community Product Expert suggested checking Gmail’s “Smart features and personalization” setting in response to a user report. That community reply is troubleshooting advice, not a Google statement that the setting is the universal cause. Treat it as a diagnostic check: review the setting in Gmail, then reopen a message that plainly contains event details. If the button remains absent, use Calendar manually and report the message and account context through Google’s support channels.

Reports such as “calendar stopped showing both the option to manually add the events from gmail to the calendar” and “No option to add Google calendar event from email in Gmail app on iphone” describe individual experiences in the Google Calendar Community. They do not establish a change to AI Overviews or a single fix that works for every Gmail account, phone or region.

Google Assistant smart displays are a different workflow

Google also documents event cards and calendar actions on supported smart displays. Seeing an event card there does not mean the same card should appear in Search. Google’s help information says AI-supported Assistant actions are currently limited to English, the United States and people aged 18 or over. Device support, account settings and regional availability can further affect what appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your missing control is on a smart display, identify the device model, signed-in account, language and country before troubleshooting. Do not apply AI Overview or Gmail steps to that device; the product surfaces and eligibility rules are different.

Why common “fixes” do not answer this question

  • Changing Search settings: Google’s published AI Overview description does not identify a calendar toggle, so changing unrelated Search preferences is not a documented remedy.
  • Turning on Gmail features for Search: Gmail’s detection of event details affects messages in Gmail, not the controls shown in a Search overview.
  • Connecting Workspace to Gemini and expecting a Search button: The connection enables a Gemini Apps workflow; it does not establish that Search AI Overviews will gain an event-creation control.
  • Assuming a rollout failure: AI Overview availability varies by query, language, account and location. A missing overview and a missing calendar action are separate questions.

A practical diagnostic checklist

  1. Name the surface: Is the screen Google Search, Gmail, Gemini Apps or a Google Assistant smart display?
  2. Record the context: Note the device, app version, account type, language, country and whether the issue affects one message or every query.
  3. Match the trigger: Search overviews require a qualifying query; Gmail requires detected event details; Gemini requires an explicit calendar prompt; Assistant requires a supported device and eligible account.
  4. Use the documented path: Open the cited source and add the event in Calendar for Search, complete Gemini’s setup for an AI-created event, or inspect the Gmail message for its button.
  5. Verify the result: Check the selected calendar, time zone, title and reminders after creation.
  6. Escalate with evidence: If a documented control is missing, capture the exact screen, message format and account context when contacting Google support. Avoid describing a Gmail symptom as an AI Overview defect unless it occurs in Search.

What is established—and what is not

Established Google workflows place calendar creation in Gemini Apps and Gmail, with a separate Assistant experience on eligible smart displays. The reviewed Google documentation does not establish that AI Overviews ever included an “Add to calendar” button, that Google removed one, or that a particular setting restores it.

That distinction gives you a reliable next step without guessing at a hidden switch: use the event’s source page and Calendar for a Search overview, use Gemini Apps with the required account connections for a conversational request, and use Gmail’s message-level control when Gmail detects event information.
