A powerful El Niño developed while drought and crop failures were affecting several regions, but drought in some of the hardest-hit places began before the event or continued after it waned. Millions died amid a compound disaster; seasonal forecasts and early action can reduce the risk of similar crises, but cannot guarantee their prevention.
How many people died in the 1876–78 famine?
A 2018 Journal of Climate study reports historical estimates of 12.2–29.3 million famine-related deaths in India, 19.5–30 million in China, and about 2 million in Brazil. These are regional estimates drawn from uneven historical documentation, not precise counts. They should not be added together and presented as a settled worldwide death toll: the historical evidence does not establish one authoritative global total.

The famine affected multiple regions, including India, China and Brazil. Its scale is one reason to distinguish the climate hazard from the human disaster. A climate pattern can alter the odds of drought or heat; failed harvests can reduce food supplies. Whether those losses become famine and mortality also depends on people’s vulnerability and the capacity of food systems and institutions to respond. The available evidence establishes the event’s climate timing and modern response options, but does not support assigning the historical deaths to particular policies or decision-makers.
Did El Niño cause the famine?
El Niño was part of the climate context, not a sufficient explanation. The 2018 study says El Niño conditions developed in 1877 and waned in 1878. Drought in India, northeastern Brazil and China began before El Niño developed or lasted beyond it; East Asia experienced the most widespread and persistent drought over the three-year period.

That timing matters: it rules out a simple story in which one climate event began everywhere at once and directly produced the famine. El Niño influences climate patterns, but its effects vary by place and time. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says impacts depend on the event’s strength, duration and timing, regional conditions, and interactions with other patterns, including the Indian Ocean Dipole. A strong El Niño is a risk signal, not a uniform global forecast of drought.
What is different about an El Niño forecast today?
Seasonal forecasting can give governments and climate-sensitive sectors time to prepare. WMO says current forecast models can predict climate patterns one to six months ahead. The World Health Organization (WHO) likewise describes ENSO events as predictable with some reliability several months in advance. That lead time is useful for planning, but does not make local rainfall, harvests or household impacts certain.

As of its 3 September 2026 update, WMO said there was a nearly 100% likelihood that El Niño would persist through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027. Forecasts at that time indicated further strengthening and a very strong event before a late-year peak. This is a dated forecast, not a timeless description of current conditions. WMO also says it does not use “Super El Niño” as a classification; its terms include “strong” and “very strong.”

The operational chain matters as much as the model: seasonal outlooks need to be translated into regional guidance, national meteorological services and decisions that fit local risks. Forecast information alone does not supply seeds, water, food or health care. A warning has value when institutions can act on it before losses deepen.

What do current food-security projections mean?
On 5 August 2026, the World Food Programme (WFP) said its initial analysis projected that the 2026–27 El Niño could leave at least 49 million more people facing acute food insecurity by the end of 2027. The analysis covered 45 countries with available food-security data and substantial expected El Niño influence. In those countries, WFP projected the number could rise from approximately 225 million to 274 million, about 22%.
These are modeled projections, not observed outcomes or a forecast of famine deaths. WFP said its analysis used historical evidence, baseline food insecurity, risk factors and expert judgment; the measure covers acute food insecurity at IPC Phase 3 or equivalent and above. It is not a global census, and the result depends on the countries and data included.

WFP reported that, since May 2026, it had triggered anticipatory action plans in Chad, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mauritania, South Sudan and Uganda. As of its 5 August release, it said these actions had provided more than US$14 million in early support to around 500,000 people. WFP also reported active anticipatory plans in more than 50 countries; that broader footprint is distinct from the six countries where it said plans had been triggered.
How can early action protect people from a climate shock?
Useful preparation is not one universal package. FAO describes combining satellite monitoring of agricultural drought, seasonal precipitation forecasts and food-insecurity data to identify places where drought risk overlaps with unfavorable forecasts and existing need. The right action depends on what is exposed, how much warning is available and whether funding and delivery systems can reach people in time.

FAO warns that a single season’s losses can deplete seed, soil, livestock and other assets, leaving people less able to manage the next season. That makes protection of future productive capacity a core part of response, not an optional addition after immediate food needs are met. WHO also identifies potential ENSO effects on food security, air and water quality, disease transmission, ecosystems and health infrastructure.
What makes an early-warning plan work?
A forecast becomes protective only when it is connected to a locally appropriate trigger, financing, supplies and delivery capacity. Institutions planning ahead need to assess:
- Lead time and trigger reliability: Is there enough time to act, and does the forecast threshold support a decision rather than just describe risk?
- Local exposure: Which crops, livestock, water systems, flood-prone areas and health services are at risk?
- Existing vulnerability: Where are food insecurity and household needs already high?
- Next-season effects: Will the action protect seed, soil, livestock and other assets needed after the immediate shock?
- Readiness to deliver: Are financing, supplies, staff and payment or distribution channels in place before losses compound?
WFP describes anticipatory action as using forecasts and early-warning systems to deliver cash, food support and warnings before a crisis unfolds. It also points to stronger water systems and pre-arranged financing, including disaster-risk insurance, credit and digital payments. Such mechanisms are useful only when they can move support to exposed people at the right time.

WFP Acting Executive Director Carl Skau said on 5 August 2026: “El Niño is a massive threat to the food security of millions who are already vulnerable.” He added: “The sooner we help families to prepare for these climate shocks, the greater our ability to save lives and protect livelihoods.” The practical point is that forecast lead time creates an opportunity to act; it does not itself prevent famine.
