Why Taiwan’s fund-management jobs are under pressure
AI demand lifted the whole ETF market
Investor demand for companies tied to the artificial-intelligence supply chain helped Taiwan’s exchange-traded-fund market reach NT$4.74 trillion, about US$145.8 billion, in March 2024, according to Financial Supervisory Commission data cited by Reuters. The inflow created opportunities for ETF providers while making it harder for active managers to keep assets and bonuses growing.

The boom is not risk-free. Reuters noted that a sharp market reversal or renewed cross-strait tensions could hurt inexperienced investors who entered during the rally.
High-dividend products pulled money from active funds
Two newly popular products—the Yuanta Taiwan Value High Dividend ETF 00940 and UPAMC Taiwan High Dividend Momentum ETF—attracted NT$220 billion in March 2024, CommonWealth Magazine reported. The report said some investors withdrew time deposits or borrowed money to participate. Every dollar redirected into these products is money that active mutual funds must compete to retain.

Jeff Chang, chairman of Cathay Securities Investment Trust and a former star fund manager, told CommonWealth on April 3, 2024: “If the assets in funds don’t grow or even shrink no matter how well they’re managed, fund managers won’t have any sense of achievement and their bonuses will be affected.” That incentive problem helps explain departures even when a manager’s investment record remains respectable.
Are managers really quitting to trade their own money?
That claim should be treated cautiously. Reporting documents managers leaving Taiwan’s fund industry or moving overseas as international interest in Taiwan equities increased, but it does not provide a verified count of people who resigned solely to trade personal capital. It also does not provide audited results for former managers’ private trading.

A manager may leave for several reasons: reduced assets under management, weaker bonus prospects, a job at an overseas firm, burnout, or a decision to invest independently. Those are different outcomes from a coordinated exodus into personal stock trading.

When flows favor a few large, high-yield products, an active manager can be correct about individual companies yet still lose assets. That makes career stability depend partly on product design and distribution, not only on security selection.

Domestic employment, overseas roles and personal accounts

Fund professionals may be allowed to own securities under employer policies and disclosure rules. They still owe clients duties that can restrict timing, position size and the use of confidential information.

Business Insider Taiwan reported that Financial Supervisory Commission investigations found managers using nominee accounts to buy shares before their funds traded. In January 2025, Cathay and Fuh Hwa investment trusts were each fined NT$1.2 million. The cases also involved warnings, dismissals and limits on future appointments. A nominee account can conceal the real owner; buying ahead of a fund transaction can create a front-running conflict. Neither practice should be confused with disclosed, compliant personal investing.

What the boom means for investors considering Taiwan high-dividend ETFs
High distributions do not by themselves make an ETF suitable for every investor. Reuters quoted Peter Hong, manager of the Capital TIP Customised Taiwan High-Tech Dividend & Growth ETF, saying, “That is not necessarily correct,” in response to the idea that a high ETF yield automatically makes the investment appropriate for everyone.

- Check whether the distribution comes from dividends, realized gains or a return of capital under the product’s rules.
- Assess concentration in Taiwan’s technology and AI supply chain rather than treating a high yield as diversification.
- Consider currency exposure and the possibility of losses during a market or cross-strait shock.
- Do not borrow or liquidate emergency savings solely to chase a recent distribution or rally.
- Read the ETF’s mandate, holdings, rebalancing method, costs and tax treatment before buying.
A large industry is being reorganized, not eliminated
Taiwan still had 38 securities investment-trust enterprises and 86 securities investment-consulting enterprises at the end of 2024, according to PwC Taiwan’s 2025 industry review. Domestic firms remain dominant, while global managers are expanding local teams and products to capture wealth created by the AI cycle.
That combination points to a reshaped profession: fewer attractive seats in some traditional active-fund teams, stronger demand for ETF design and distribution, and more competition for managers who can serve international capital. The evidence supports a labor-market shift and documented compliance failures—not a verified mass movement of Taiwan fund managers into trading only their own money.
