Chrome normally shows open tabs from another device only when both devices use the same Google Account in Chrome, the Open Tabs sync category is enabled, and you check the correct device-specific view. On a computer, open More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. If Chrome says sync is paused, complete its verification or sign-in prompt. On Android, check Open Tabs separately from the setting that automatically opens tab groups.
The quickest way to diagnose the problem is to treat it as three separate questions: is Chrome using the same account, is the Open Tabs data type enabled, and are you looking in the view that displays synced tabs? A failure at any one of those points can make a working tab appear to be missing.

What must be true before Chrome can show another device’s tabs
Cross-device tabs are part of Chrome Sync, not a consequence of merely visiting a Google website while signed in. Chrome needs an active Chrome sign-in on both devices, and the sign-in must use the same Google Account. A phone can be signed in to one account in an app while the active Chrome profile is using another account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChrome also treats Open Tabs as a selectable sync category. A general “Sync is on” message does not prove that Open Tabs is included. If that category is disabled on either device, tabs from that device may not appear where you expect.

Finally, the display is platform-specific. Google documents the Tabs from other devices route for Chrome on computers. Android has additional controls for tab groups, including whether groups from other devices open automatically. That automatic-opening preference is not the same thing as Open Tabs synchronization.
Start by identifying the two devices and the active profile
Before changing settings, label the devices in your head: the source is where the tabs are currently open, and the destination is where you want to find them. Check the active Chrome profile on each one. The account shown in a device’s operating-system settings, Gmail app, or a Google web page is not necessarily the account connected to the Chrome profile that owns the tabs.
This matters most when a person has work and personal accounts, several Chrome profiles, or more than one Google Account saved on a phone. Each Chrome profile has its own browser data and sync state. Looking at the right account in the wrong profile can therefore look exactly like a sync failure.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | What to do |

| No devices or tabs appear on a computer | The active Chrome profile is using a different Google Account, or Open Tabs is not selected for sync. | Compare the account shown in Chrome on both devices, then inspect the Open Tabs sync control. |
| Chrome displays “Sync is paused” | Chrome needs you to verify your identity or sign in again. | Use the verification prompt in Chrome and finish the sign-in flow. |
| Tabs are synced but you are looking at a new-tab page or tab switcher | The tabs are listed in History’s device view rather than automatically placed in the current window. | On a computer, open More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. |
| An Android tab group does not open by itself | Automatic opening of groups from other devices is disabled. This can happen even when Open Tabs sync is enabled. | Check both Open Tabs under Sync and the automatic tab-group option under Tabs and tab groups. |
| Only one account’s tabs are visible | The destination is viewing a different Chrome profile or account from the one used on the source device. | Switch to the matching Chrome profile and compare the account shown there. |
| A tab was closed on the other device | Open Tabs is intended to expose synced open-tab state; Google’s consumer help does not promise that every closed tab will remain recoverable there. | Search Chrome History on the device where you need the page. Do not rely on cross-device sync as a guaranteed restore mechanism. |
Fix missing tabs on a computer
1. Verify the active Chrome profile and Google Account
- Open Chrome on the computer that should receive the tabs.
- Select the profile icon near the top-right of the window and note the Google Account shown for the active profile.
- Repeat on the phone, tablet, or other computer that has the tabs open. Compare the account, not just the person’s operating-system login or the account used on a Google web page.
- If you use multiple Chrome profiles, switch to the profile that is signed in to the account containing the tabs. Each profile has its own Chrome data and sync state.
If the accounts differ, sign the relevant Chrome profile into the same Google Account on both devices. Do not assume that adding an account to the device automatically changes the account used by Chrome. The account has to be the one shown in Chrome’s own profile and settings area.
2. Confirm that Open Tabs is included in sync
- Open Chrome’s Settings on each device.
- Go to the Chrome sync controls. Depending on the current Chrome release, the route is under the account area, then Sync or Manage what you sync.
- Find the Open Tabs category and make sure it is selected. Chrome’s menu wording can change, so use the account and sync section rather than assuming a particular label is permanent.
- Check the receiving computer as well as the device that has the tabs. A category disabled on either side can prevent the expected cross-device list.
A top-level indication that sync is enabled is not enough; Open Tabs is the setting that controls this specific data type. If you are troubleshooting someone else’s computer, ask them to show the actual Open Tabs control rather than reporting only that “sync looks on.”
3. Open the documented tab list
- On the computer, select More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose History, then History again.
- Select Tabs from other devices.
This is a history view, not a promise that Chrome will merge another device’s windows into the current window. Look for the device name and the individual open pages in that view. A missing tab strip entry does not by itself prove that synchronization failed; you may simply be looking at the wrong surface.
4. Resume a paused sync session
If Chrome shows Sync is paused, select the notice and complete the requested verification or sign-in. Google uses this prompt when Chrome needs the account credentials confirmed again, for example after a sign-out from a Google service. Until the prompt is completed, Chrome may stop updating synced data such as Open Tabs.

Read the prompt carefully and finish the account verification in the same Chrome profile. Opening a new tab or signing in to a different Google service does not necessarily clear the paused state. Confirm that the notice disappears or that Chrome reports sync is active before checking the tab list again.
If sync repeatedly switches off after you close or restart Chrome, use Chrome’s sync troubleshooting controls to review the setting that allows Chrome to keep the required on-device site data. The exact wording and location can differ by release. Do not delete local browser data as a first response; first complete the account verification and review the on-device-data setting Chrome identifies.
5. Check the source device’s state
Return to the device that has the pages open and verify that it is using the same Chrome account and that Open Tabs is enabled there. If that device is signed out of Chrome or using another profile, the receiving computer will not see the tabs under the account you checked.
Leave the source device in the matching profile while you verify the destination. If the tabs belong to a work profile but the destination is showing a personal profile, changing windows will not help; switch profiles first and then reopen the History route.

Fix the problem on an Android phone or tablet
1. Check the account used by Chrome
- Open Chrome on the Android device.
- Open Chrome Settings and inspect the account shown at the top.
- Compare it with the account shown in Chrome on the other device. If several accounts are present, check the active Chrome profile rather than assuming Android’s primary account is the one being synchronized.
Android’s account list can contain several identities, but Chrome Sync follows the account selected in Chrome. The relevant comparison is therefore the account displayed by Chrome on both devices, not simply the first account listed in Android settings.
2. Turn on Open Tabs sync
- In Chrome for Android, open Settings.
- Open Sync.
- Locate Open Tabs and turn it on.
Repeat the check on the other device. The Android help instructions identify Open Tabs as a separate sync control, so a general sync status cannot substitute for this check. If one device has the category turned off, enabling it on only the destination does not establish that the source is publishing its open-tab state.
3. Distinguish synchronization from automatic tab-group opening
Android Chrome has a separate control under Tabs and tab groups for Automatically open tab groups from other devices. A tab group can be saved and synchronized for devices using the same account without opening itself in the current Android window.

- Go to Tabs and tab groups.
- Review Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
- Enable it only if you want eligible groups to open automatically. If you prefer to open them manually, leave it off and use the synced-tab or history view instead.
This option is documented for Android. Do not treat it as a universal desktop setting or as proof that Open Tabs sync is enabled. If individual pages are missing, check Open Tabs; if a synchronized group is present but does not launch by itself, check the automatic-opening preference.
What each setting does—and does not do
- Chrome sign-in: Identifies the account whose browser data can be synchronized. A Google website login alone is not equivalent.
- Open Tabs: Selects the open-tab data type for synchronization. It is separate from a general “sync is on” indicator.
- Tabs from other devices: The documented computer view where synchronized tabs can be found. It does not automatically combine another device’s windows with the current window.
- Automatically open tab groups from other devices: An Android preference for opening eligible groups. It is separate from Open Tabs and is not a universal desktop control.
- History: The place to search for a page that may have been closed. It is the appropriate fallback, but it is not a guarantee that every closed cross-device tab can be restored.
What to do when the tab was closed
Chrome’s official consumer instructions explain where to find synced open tabs and how to repair sync, but they do not provide a universal guarantee that a tab closed on another device will continue to appear under Tabs from other devices. They also do not establish a consumer retention period for ordinary cross-device tabs.
- Open Chrome History on the device where you need the page.
- Search or browse the history for the site or page title.
- If the page is not in History and is not listed under Tabs from other devices, treat it as unavailable through the documented consumer sync path rather than assuming a hidden retention window.
Sync should therefore be viewed as a way to keep currently open-tab information available across signed-in devices, not as a guaranteed backup of every tab ever closed. Avoid claims that a closed tab will reappear after a fixed number of hours or days; Google’s consumer guidance does not establish such a retention promise.
Do not confuse synced tabs with “Send to your devices”
Chrome also lets you send a single page to another device. The flow uses the same Google Account and a Send to your devices command. That feature is useful when you deliberately want to move one page, but it is separate from the Open Tabs category and does not repair missing synced-tab history.
Use sending when you still have the page open and want an explicit handoff. Use Open Tabs and History when you are looking for pages that were already open on another device. Sending a page now cannot recreate a different page that was closed earlier.

Work through the following order so that an account mismatch is not mistaken for a Chrome display problem:
- On both devices, identify the active Chrome profile and confirm the exact same Google Account.
- In Chrome’s sync controls, confirm that Open Tabs is selected on both devices.
- On a computer, open More > History > History > Tabs from other devices.
- If Chrome reports that sync is paused, complete the displayed verification or sign-in prompt.
- On Android, inspect both Sync > Open Tabs and Tabs and tab groups > Automatically open tab groups from other devices when the symptom involves groups.
- If the page may have been closed, search History instead of assuming the synced-tab list will restore it.
- If the symptom persists, repeat the checks while deliberately switching to each Chrome profile you use. Record which profile shows the source tabs and use that exact profile on the destination.
Common wrong turns to avoid
Do not buy a new computer, phone, router, replacement part, cleanup utility, or paid repair tool for this symptom. Missing Open Tabs entries are an account, sync-category, profile, or display-location issue in the documented workflow.

Do not use managed ChromeOS Desk sync rules as a consumer promise. Important scope: managed ChromeOS Desk sync
Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation describes a managed ChromeOS feature called Desk sync, with administrator policy controls and retention behavior. Those rules apply to managed ChromeOS environments and that feature. They should not be used as a retention promise for ordinary consumer Chrome tabs on a personal computer, phone, or tablet.
When the tabs still do not appear
- Recheck the profile: Multiple Chrome profiles can make the right account appear absent when you are actually viewing a different profile.
- Recheck the category: “Sync is on” does not establish that Open Tabs is selected.
- Recheck the destination: On computers, use the History path rather than expecting another device’s tabs to appear in the current tab strip.
- Recheck the pause notice: A pending verification prompt can stop updates until you sign in again.
- Recheck the Android group setting: Automatic opening is independent of Open Tabs synchronization.
- Recheck whether the page was closed: History is the appropriate place to look, and consumer Chrome documentation does not guarantee recovery of every closed tab through sync.
- Recheck the account context: Compare the account shown inside Chrome, not an operating-system account or a separate Google app.
- Recheck the feature: Sending a tab with “Send to your devices” is a separate handoff and does not repair the Open Tabs list.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I see “sync is on” but no tabs?
Open Tabs is a selectable sync category. A general sync status does not prove that this category is enabled. Check Open Tabs in Chrome’s sync controls on both devices and confirm that the active profiles use the same Google Account.
Does signing in to Gmail make Chrome tabs sync?
No. Being signed in to a Google website is not by itself the same as signing in to Chrome and enabling Chrome Sync. Check the account shown in Chrome’s profile and settings area.
Where are tabs from another device on a computer?
Open More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. Google documents this route for computer Chrome.
Why does an Android tab group not open automatically?
Automatic opening is controlled separately. Under Chrome Settings, review Tabs and tab groups and the option named Automatically open tab groups from other devices. Also verify that Open Tabs is enabled under Sync.

Can Chrome restore a tab I closed on my other device?
Not reliably through the synced-tab list. Google’s consumer guidance does not guarantee that every closed tab remains there or specify a universal retention period. Search Chrome History on the device where you need the page.
Do I need the same device name or operating-system account?
No specific operating-system account match is the documented requirement. The important checks are the same Google Account in Chrome, the Open Tabs category, and the correct destination view.
Is “Send to your devices” a fix for missing tabs?
No. It is a separate feature for deliberately sending a page that is still open. It does not restore missing synced-tab history.
Should I use a cleanup app or paid repair service?
No. The documented fixes involve Chrome profiles, account verification, sync settings, History, and Android’s tab-group preference. A new device or cleanup utility does not address those settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest fix for missing Chrome tabs from another device?
Confirm the same Google Account is active in Chrome on both devices, enable Open Tabs in Sync, then on a computer open More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. If sync is paused, complete Chrome’s verification prompt.
Why are my tabs missing even though Chrome says sync is on?
Open Tabs is a separate sync category. Check that it is selected on both devices and that you are viewing the matching Chrome profile.
Can I recover a tab I already closed?
Check Chrome History, but do not assume the Tabs from other devices list will restore it. Google’s consumer guidance does not guarantee recovery of every closed tab or specify a universal retention period.
What should I check on Android when a tab group does not appear?
Check Settings > Sync > Open Tabs, then separately review Settings > Tabs and tab groups > Automatically open tab groups from other devices. Automatic opening and Open Tabs synchronization are different controls.
Does sending a tab to another device repair sync?
No. Send to your devices is a separate, deliberate page-sharing feature. It is useful for a page you still have open, not for rebuilding missing synced-tab history.
The Bottom Line
Missing Chrome tabs usually trace to the wrong Chrome profile, a different Google Account, Open Tabs being disabled, a paused sync session, or looking in the wrong view. Verify the account and Open Tabs setting on both devices, use the computer’s Tabs from other devices history route, complete any verification prompt, and check Android’s separate tab-group opening preference. For a tab that was already closed, search History and treat recovery as uncertain rather than guaranteed.
