Why Swiggy and Zomato Payout Files Don’t Always Match Their Own Totals

If you reconcile restaurant payouts from Swiggy or Zomato, the figure you need is often not on the first tab you open. Shivang Shukla, a software engineer in India, parsed one Swiggy payout annexure and 23 Zomato settlement reports, all described as publicly published by the businesses that received them. He reports that three of the 24 files have totals that disagree with their own totals. The problems he describes are not all the same kind, and the sample is small, so read what follows as a guide to where these files can mislead you, not as a measure of how often they do.

The full write-up is his DEV Community article, “I parsed 24 real food-delivery payout files. Three of them disagree with their own totals,” published September 16, 2026.

What the sample covers, and how to read it

The sample is one Swiggy payout annexure and 23 Zomato settlement reports. The author’s observations come from those files alone. The article does not link the workbooks or the parser code, so these are his reported observations and have not been independently reproduced. The article also describes mismatches by type and by file; this summary covers the types, and the article itself is the place for file-level detail.

Swiggy: reading the payout annexure

Seven sheets and a misspelled second header

The Swiggy workbook has seven sheets. The Other charges and deductions sheet holds adjustments in two blocks: one for the current week and one for the previous week. The header on the second block reads Adjusment Type, with the letters in the wrong order. A parser that matches only the correct spelling can miss every row in that block. Search for both spellings, or match headers by position within the block.

Discount Summary and the Restaurant Share column

In Discount Summary, the Restaurant Share (%) field identifies the part of each discount the restaurant funded. In the author’s reading, a value of 100 means the full discount was charged to the restaurant, and 50 means the cost was split. Some lines read “Unable to fetch Campaign Details” even though they carry an amount. In the one Swiggy file examined, one such line equalled about 3% of that week’s total discounts. That is a single observation from one file.

A TOTAL row that looks like data

One row is marked TOTAL in the Restaurant Share column and has a blank label. A script that treats every non-empty row as a discount will count it. The author’s first parser pass nearly doubled the discount figure this way. A check against the workbook’s own total row caught the error, which sat in his parser rather than in the platform’s file.

Total amount, Adjusted amount and outstanding balances

The payout file separates amounts that look similar but mean different things. The author’s reading of the columns is below.

Column What it holds, per the author Question it answers
Total amount The full amount on the line, which can include an outstanding balance not yet deducted in the current cycle What the item is worth in total
Adjusted amount The amount that actually left this payout What was taken from this week’s payout
Outstanding amount The balance still to be deducted What may still come off in a later cycle

The author’s example shape is an onboarding fee. The full figure appears under Total amount, zero appears under Adjusted amount, and the same figure appears under outstanding amount. Summing the Total amount column would count a charge that did not leave this payout.

Zomato: sections, labels and a broken summary tab

The Addition Deductions Details sheet is sectioned

The author calls the worksheet Addition Deductions Details, without a slash. It has five sections, and each section has its own header row. Summing every amount row across the sheet mixes credits with charges, so read the section label first.

  • The first section lists additions, such as cancellation refunds or carry-forward credits.
  • The later sections list deductions. Ads appear under “Investments in growth services” as ADS.
  • The deduction sections are referred to by letter in the grand-total label, which uses A, B, C and D.

A grand-total label that leaves out section D

The grand-total row reads Total Deductions (A)+(B)+(C), but the amount includes A, B, C and D. Section D covers adjustments from previous weeks. Someone who checks the figure only against the label can conclude that previous-week adjustments are excluded when they are included. The amount is not wrong; the label is incomplete.

Offers and Discounts Summary

In all 23 Zomato reports the author examined, the Offers and Discounts Summary tab contained #REF! formula references, so the tab showed no usable values. Even where a tab like this works, the author says it does not state who funded each discount. Reconcile discount funding against the detail sections and the platform’s own records instead.

Side by side

The table below uses four comparison axes drawn from the author’s examples. It is not a full audit of either platform, and it does not rank them.

Axis Swiggy annexure (one file) Zomato settlement reports (23 files)
Additions and deductions separated Current-week and previous-week adjustment blocks in Other charges and deductions Five sections, each with its own header row; the first section lists additions
Discount funding attributed Restaurant Share (%) in Discount Summary: 100 means the restaurant bore the full discount, 50 means a split The Offers and Discounts Summary tab does not state who funded each discount; it showed #REF! in all 23 reports
Total label matches the arithmetic A TOTAL row sits in the Restaurant Share column with a blank label Total Deductions (A)+(B)+(C) covers an amount that also includes section D
Detail tabs usable Some discount lines read “Unable to fetch Campaign Details” despite carrying an amount The discount summary tab was broken in every examined report

The author’s summary of the comparison is blunt: “If you run a restaurant on these platforms, the short version is that the number you care about is probably not on the tab you’re looking at.”

Checking your own payout file

  • Open every tab, not only the summary. In a Swiggy annexure, check both adjustment blocks in Other charges and deductions, and search for both spellings of the adjustment header.
  • Identify total rows by structure before summing. A row marked TOTAL can sit in the Restaurant Share column with no label.
  • Keep Total amount, Adjusted amount and outstanding amount separate. Only the adjusted figure is what left the payout in that cycle.
  • In a Zomato report, sum by section rather than across the sheet. Read the letters in the grand-total label and confirm which sections the amount covers.
  • Keep each Restaurant Share percentage attached to its discount line, so restaurant-funded and split discounts are not mixed together.
  • If a discount summary tab shows #REF!, reconcile against the detail tabs and the platform’s own records.

What the sample does not establish

The author declines to give a typical loss figure. He notes that a loss figure circulating in this area traces back to a company that sells reconciliation software. The article does not establish an industry-wide number, so do not repeat that figure without first tracing it to its original publisher and checking how it was measured.

Use this material to check the specific lines you are paid on. It does not tell you what share of your payouts are affected.
