Auto-renewal charges you again when a subscription reaches its next billing date unless you cancel it under the service’s terms. The arrangement is legal in many situations, but cancellation can feel disproportionately difficult when links are hidden, a phone call is required, or the steps are confusing. If a charge continues after you tried to cancel, document what happened, check the next statement, dispute the charge with your card issuer when appropriate, and report an unwanted subscription to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your state attorney general.
What auto-renewal actually does
Auto-renewal is a recurring-payment arrangement. You accept an offer, provide a payment method, and agree that the service will continue for another billing interval unless you take an affirmative step to stop it. The initial term might be a month, a year, or a promotional period; the renewal price and date should be stated in the offer or contract.

The FTC calls this broader category negative-option marketing: “the absence of affirmative consumer action constitutes consent to be charged for goods or services.” Auto-renewal is one form of negative option. The practical sequence is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- You accept recurring terms and authorize the merchant to charge a card, bank account, or another payment method.
- The initial term or introductory offer runs.
- At the disclosed renewal date, the contract continues unless a completed cancellation has taken effect.
- The payment method is charged for the next interval, and access generally continues for that paid period.
There is no universal renewal schedule, notice period, price, grace period, or cancellation deadline. A service’s written terms and applicable law determine whether the price changes after an introductory offer, when cancellation becomes effective, and whether a renewal reminder is sent. Treat the date shown in your account or receipt as the controlling detail, rather than assuming every subscription follows the same pattern.

Why stopping a subscription can take more work than starting one
Inaction keeps the payment running
Enrollment is usually a single decision. Renewal depends on remembering a future date and completing a cancellation before the merchant’s cutoff. That asymmetry lowers transaction costs for uninterrupted service, but it makes inattention expensive: a forgotten trial or annual renewal can produce another charge even when you no longer use the product.
The FTC-hosted paper Selling Subscriptions discusses consumer inattention and inertia in subscription markets and cites earlier findings of substantial cancellation lags among health-club members with automatically renewing monthly contracts. Those findings explain why recurring payments can continue; they do not establish that every company deliberately obstructs cancellation.
Procedural friction is often the problem
People who submitted individual comments to the FTC rulemaking record described searching for a cancellation link, contacting a representative, or spending time on hold after enrolling online. One commenter wrote: “Often a company makes it significantly more difficult to even find out where or how to cancel a subscription.” These are firsthand submissions, not a representative survey, so they show the kinds of obstacles consumers report rather than how common each obstacle is.
Recommended Free Tools
Friction can include a link buried several menus deep, a requirement to move from a website to a telephone queue, repeated retention offers, or a final confirmation step that is easy to miss. A cancellation request that is started but not completed may leave the recurring authorization active.

What the Chegg enforcement case shows
In a 2025 announcement about Chegg, the FTC alleged that cancellation links were buried, that consumers needed multiple clicks to locate them, and that the eventual process was confusing. The complaint also alleged that some people continued to be charged after requesting cancellation. The agency said nearly 200,000 consumers had been charged after requesting cancellation since October 2020. That figure is an allegation about the company named in that case, not a statistic for subscriptions generally.
The same announcement described a proposed $7.5 million payment intended to fund refunds to affected consumers. A proposed settlement is specific to that enforcement matter and does not automatically determine your rights against another merchant.
The U.S. federal policy status in 2026
The 2024 “click-to-cancel” rule is not an operative nationwide mandate
The FTC’s October 2024 final click-to-cancel rule was vacated. Do not rely on summaries that present its cancellation requirements as a current blanket federal rule. The FTC’s rule history now lists the vacated rule alongside newer rulemaking activity.
The FTC opened a new rulemaking process
In March 2026, the FTC issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM). The notice asks for information about negative-option markets, disclosures, informed consent, practices that make terms hard to understand, cancellation deterrents, and possible regulatory responses. An ANPRM is a request for public comment and ideas; it is not a final rule and does not itself create a new cancellation procedure for every business.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
The FTC said it had received more than 100,000 complaints about negative options and related practices over five years and continues to receive thousands each year. Those are agency complaint counts, not a measurement of all subscriptions or proof that every complaint is valid.
Existing obligations can still apply
Separately from the vacated rule and the 2026 ANPRM, the FTC’s Chegg announcement summarized the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA). For covered online sellers using negative-option features, ROSCA requires clear disclosure of material terms, express informed consent before charging, and a simple way to stop recurring charges. Whether ROSCA covers a particular transaction depends on its facts and the statute’s scope. State and local automatic-renewal laws may add requirements, but protections vary by jurisdiction and are not mapped here.
FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige described the trade-off this way: “Negative option subscriptions can offer procompetitive features to consumers and the marketplace more broadly by lowering transaction costs and ensuring consumers receive uninterrupted service.” He also warned that the enforcement record shows “difficult cancellation processes, unlawful retention tactics, and a suite of other impediments that prevent consumers from easily switching or ending subscription services.” Both statements refer to the benefits and risks of the model; neither turns the vacated 2024 rule into current law.

| Question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| When is the next charge? | Exact renewal date and billing interval. | It tells you how much time you have to cancel. |
| How much will renewal cost? | Regular price, taxes or fees, and any change after an introductory period. | A low trial price may not be the recurring price. |
| Where can cancellation be completed? | The precise menu path, URL or in-app screen, and whether a call or chat is required. | A missing or indirect route can add delay. |
| What confirms cancellation? | Email, confirmation number, account status, or another record. | You need evidence if billing continues. |
| When does cancellation take effect? | Immediately, at the end of the paid period, or on another stated date. | Stopping future renewals is different from obtaining a refund for a past charge. |
| What do the written terms say? | Renewal, notice, refund, and payment-authority language. | The terms define the merchant’s stated process, subject to applicable law. |
If an offer does not clearly answer these questions, pause before entering payment details. A screenshot or downloaded receipt can preserve information that later disappears from a checkout page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step: cancel and create a record
- Identify the billing merchant. Check the card or bank statement, receipt, and account email. A marketplace, app store, payment processor, or service provider may handle cancellation differently.
- Open the account’s subscription controls. Follow the service’s stated path, such as Account, Billing, Plan, Manage subscription, and Cancel. Read each confirmation screen instead of closing the tab after the first click.
- Complete every required step. If the site offers a phone, chat, or email route, use the channel specified in the terms and ask the representative to state the effective cancellation date.
- Save proof immediately. Keep the confirmation email, screenshot, ticket number, chat transcript, or call notes. Record the date, time, channel, account identifier, and the name or ID of any representative.
- Check the account status. Look for wording such as “cancels on,” “ends,” or “renewal off.” An offer to pause, downgrade, or accept a discount is not the same as cancellation unless you choose it and the account confirms the change.
- Check the next statement. Review the card or bank account after the stated effective date and again around the next normal billing cycle. Keep the statement showing the charge or its absence.
Do not assume that deleting an app, removing a payment card, or abandoning an account cancels the contract. Those actions may not revoke the recurring authorization.
If the merchant charges you after cancellation
Start with the merchant, in writing
Send a concise message identifying the account, the date and method of cancellation, the confirmation record, and the charge you want corrected. Ask for written confirmation that future renewals are disabled and state whether you are requesting a refund. Keep the message and any reply.

Dispute the charge with the payment provider
If billing continues after an attempted cancellation, contact the card issuer or bank and dispute the charge. The FTC advises consumers to use the issuer’s online or telephone dispute process and to retain cancellation requests and conversation notes. Give the issuer the transaction date, amount, merchant name, and your evidence. Payment-network deadlines and procedures can differ, so follow the instructions and time limits the issuer provides.

Report a subscription you never agreed to
If you were charged for a subscription you did not authorize or do not recognize, report it to the FTC or your state attorney general. Include the merchant, dates, amounts, and copies of relevant records. A report does not guarantee an individual refund, but it helps enforcement agencies identify patterns.
These are general consumer-information steps, not individualized legal advice. The appropriate route can depend on your location, payment method, contract, and the facts surrounding the cancellation.
Common failure points and what to do next
- You cannot find the cancellation control: search the account’s billing and help pages, review the original receipt, and ask support for the exact cancellation path. Save screenshots of unavailable or broken controls.
- A phone call is required: note the number, call time, representative, promised effective date, and any confirmation code. Follow up in writing if possible.
- You clicked cancel but received no confirmation: repeat the process before the renewal deadline, capture the final screen, and request a written record.
- The price changed at renewal: compare the charge with the original offer and renewal disclosure. Preserve both documents before contacting the merchant or issuer.
- The merchant says access continues until the paid period ends: distinguish continued access from a new renewal. Ask whether future billing is disabled and record the stated end date.
- You used an app store or other intermediary: check that intermediary’s subscription settings as well as the service’s account page; the party that billed you is the one whose statement and cancellation record matter for a dispute.
What this means for consumers and businesses
For consumers, the safest habit is to treat enrollment as a future administrative task: note the renewal date, price, and cancellation route at the moment you subscribe. For businesses, a clear disclosure and a cancellation path that is at least as practical as enrollment reduce disputes and support informed consent. The 2026 FTC proceeding may change federal policy, but its outcome and timing are not yet established.
