Why Stripe Payment Links Don’t Deliver Products—and What to Automate Instead

A Stripe Payment Link takes a customer through checkout; it does not deliver a digital product, create a shipping label, or run your order process. To fulfill orders reliably, connect Stripe’s server-side payment events to your own delivery or order workflow. A customer’s return to a confirmation page is not a safe trigger for business-critical fulfillment.

What a Payment Link does—and what it doesn’t

A Payment Link is a reusable, shareable URL for a Stripe-hosted payment page. After checkout, Stripe can show a hosted confirmation or redirect the customer to a URL you choose. Either is a customer-facing checkout step, not an order-fulfillment system.

For example, a redirect can take a buyer to instructions or a thank-you page. It does not, by itself, securely confirm payment to your application, email a download, create an order in your system, or start shipping. Those actions require your own integration or workflow.

Why a return-page trigger can lose orders

A browser redirect depends on the customer completing the return journey. A buyer might close the tab, lose connectivity, or never reach the page after paying. Stripe cautions: “Triggering fulfillment only from your Checkout landing page is unreliable.” Instead, use server-side payment events to initiate actions that must happen even if the customer never returns to your site.

  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

The landing page remains useful for showing a clear confirmation and next steps. Treat it as the customer experience, not as proof your backend has completed fulfillment.

How the reliable fulfillment flow works

  1. Collect the payment through the Payment Link. The buyer completes checkout on Stripe’s hosted page.
  2. Receive the relevant payment event on your server. Configure a server-side event handler to connect Stripe’s checkout outcome to your application. Checkout Session events can track payments made through Payment Links.
  3. Check the Checkout Session’s payment status. Use the status to decide whether fulfillment should proceed; do not treat every checkout completion as a paid order.
  4. Map the session to the item and order. Use your application’s order data and relevant checkout context to determine what the customer bought and where it belongs.
  5. Run the appropriate downstream action. Your system might send access instructions, record the sale, or start a shipping workflow.
  6. Show the buyer a confirmation. Use the hosted confirmation or redirect to a page that explains what happens next, without making that browser visit the only fulfillment trigger.

Use payment status to decide when to fulfill

Checkout Session payment_status can be paid, unpaid, or no_payment_required. Stripe documents this field as useful for deciding when to fulfill. Your handler should make an explicit decision for the states your checkout can produce rather than assuming every completed checkout represents a paid order.

  • Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
  • paid: the session reports payment as paid; this is the state to consider for paid-order fulfillment.
  • unpaid: do not treat the session as a paid order merely because checkout was completed.
  • no_payment_required: handle deliberately if your setup permits sessions that do not require payment; decide whether the associated item should be fulfilled under your business rules.

The right action depends on what you sell and how your checkout is configured. A download email and a physical shipment are different fulfillment operations, even when both begin with a payment event.

Connect the Payment Link to the order you need to fulfill

Your event handler needs enough context to associate a Checkout Session with the correct product and order. Stripe copies Payment Link metadata to Checkout Sessions, which can help pass that context through checkout. Payment Links also expose configuration for shipping-address collection, shipping options, and automatic tax.

  • USB interface, keyboard emulation, no need to install software to read, configuration software for changing settings available.
  • Read data from all 3 tracks, high and low coercivity cards, ISO7811, AAMVA, CA DMV and most magnetic card data formats.
  • Work on Windows, Mac and other USB capable systems. Work with TXT, notepad, Word, Excel, POS systems and son on.
  • Compact size, with 145cm USB cord, two 3mm-diameter screw holes for fixing at the bottom, a LED indicator light
  • Perfect for POS, Banking, Loyalty, Access Control, ID verification and other applications.

These fields help supply information; they do not create fulfillment logic. Your application still has to interpret the session, apply its own order rules, and perform the downstream action. For physical orders, make sure the workflow has the shipping details and option it needs. For digital goods, make sure it can identify the correct entitlement or delivery instructions.

What “the 40 lines that do” can honestly promise

There is no universal 40-line Stripe snippet that safely fulfills every Payment Link order. The code depends on the server framework and runtime, Stripe SDK version, event endpoint, payment states you accept, and the product-delivery mechanism. A redirect URL alone is not a reliable substitute for that integration.

  • Accept all major credit and debit cards for one low rate.
  • Accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express—no hidden fees.
  • Track your earnings and view your complete sales history from the free Square Point of Sale app.
  • Works with Apple and Android devices that have a 3.5 mm headphone jack. No charging needed

A minimal implementation should at least receive the relevant server-side event, inspect the Checkout Session’s payment status, map the session to the correct order, and trigger the application-specific delivery action. Before deploying a real handler, also follow Stripe’s current webhook guidance for signature verification and repeated event delivery. Those implementation details are not established by the cited Payment Link and fulfillment guidance here, so an unverified short sample would risk implying guarantees it cannot support.

Choose the downstream action for the product

Digital access

After the applicable payment state is confirmed, your system can grant access or send an email containing the next steps. The delivery mechanism—such as entitlement creation or a secure download—is yours to implement; the Payment Link does not provide it automatically.

Physical goods

Use the event to record the sale or start your shipping workflow. Shipping-address collection and shipping-option configuration can provide checkout context, but your system or fulfillment provider must still act on the order.

Order records and notifications

A payment event can also trigger internal actions such as logging a sale or sending an order confirmation. Stripe’s guidance presents these as downstream fulfillment examples, not as actions performed automatically by the confirmation page.
