Streaming-TV lag has three common sources: the television or streaming device is slow, one app is misbehaving, or the network is delaying content. The fix depends on which layer is failing. Restart the device, identify whether every app or only one is affected, let updates finish, and check storage before buying network hardware. A faster Wi-Fi connection cannot make an underpowered processor render menus faster.
Use the symptom-led steps below and retest after each change. They are based on current guidance for Google TV, Roku and TCL Google TV; menu names can differ by model and software version.

First identify what is actually slow
“Slow” can mean several different things. A remote that takes seconds to move through every menu points to the device interface. One app that takes a long time to open or crashes points to that app or its data. “Not enough memory,” “Insufficient memory” or “Can’t run app” messages suggest storage, memory management or, on some platforms, a connectivity problem. If menus respond normally but video buffers, playback fails or thumbnails load slowly, investigate the network first.

|---|---|---|
| Home screen, settings and remote commands are slow everywhere | TV/streaming-device software, background apps, updates or limited resources | Restart the device, then test a settings menu before opening an app |
| Only one app is slow, freezes or crashes | That app’s cache, data or current state | Open two other apps; if they respond normally, use the app-specific steps |
| Several apps fail to open or a memory warning appears | Low storage, background processes or a network condition reported by the platform | Check available storage, remove unused apps where supported, and run a connection check |
| Menus are responsive but streams buffer or take a long time to start | Wi-Fi, router placement, interference, congestion or the internet connection | Run the platform’s network test and compare playback on another app or device |
| The slowdown began while apps or the system were updating | Temporary update workload | Let downloads and installation finish, restart if requested, and retest |
A network test by itself does not prove that menu processing is slow. Conversely, a responsive menu does not rule out a network problem that affects playback.

Use this low-risk troubleshooting order
- Restart the TV or streaming device. Use the platform’s software restart rather than immediately unplugging it or choosing a factory reset.
- Separate one-app trouble from system-wide trouble. Compare the affected app with at least two others and with a settings screen.
- Allow active updates to finish. App installation can temporarily make a TV feel slower.
- Install available app and system updates. Recheck performance after each update completes.
- Check storage and close or remove unused apps. This matters especially when memory errors or multiple app-launch failures occur.
- Investigate the network only when symptoms point to it. Check signal, router placement, interference and congestion; then test Ethernet if the device supports it.
- Clear app data or perform a factory reset only later. Clearing data can remove sign-ins and local app state, while a factory reset erases device settings and requires setup again.
Retest after every step. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether the interface, an app or the network was responsible.
Google TV: exact checks for a laggy interface
Restart from Settings
On Google TV, open Settings > System > Restart. After the home screen returns, move through Settings and launch more than one app. This restart is the first check because it clears temporary processes without deleting your account, apps or preferences.
Stop recently opened apps
Force-stop apps that were recently used, then return to the home screen. The exact app-management screen can vary by Google TV version, but the control is found in the app’s information or management page. Stop only apps that are behaving badly or consuming resources; do not treat force-stopping as a substitute for an update.
Update apps and the system
Open the Google Play Store on the TV, review pending app updates and install them. Then check the system-update control under the device’s System settings. Google notes that a TV may run more slowly while app updates are downloading or installing, so judge performance after the update queue is complete, not during it.

Understand Quick Start
Quick Start is an optional startup setting. It can reduce the time needed to wake the television, but it is not a general guarantee of faster menu navigation once the TV is running. Do not enable it as a diagnosis for processor or app lag.
Broader Google TV checks
For problems that span apps, verify that the intended Wi-Fi network and band are selected. Confirm the correct account profile is active, because profile-specific app state can make a problem appear inconsistent. Google also provides remote-control settings checks and an option to clear app data. Clearing data is more disruptive than clearing a cache: it may remove sign-ins, downloads and preferences, so reserve it for an app that remains faulty after restarting and updating.
Roku: handling memory messages and connection symptoms
When Roku says “Not enough memory” or “Can’t run app”
Roku’s guidance identifies both low storage and a network issue as possible causes of “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app” and “Insufficient memory” messages. Start with a system restart, which Roku describes as the least invasive reset and says does not change settings. If the message returns, remove channels or apps you no longer use to free storage, then check the connection.

In the Roku network settings, review the connection and signal indicators. Move the router and player closer together when practical, reduce walls and other obstructions, and keep sources of wireless interference away from both devices. Reduce congestion by pausing large downloads or heavy network use while testing. If your model and router support it, compare a 5 GHz connection with the current band.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Some Roku models cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels, so channel changes are model-dependent. Do not assume that selecting any 5 GHz channel will work; use a channel supported by the specific player.
Account for a stick hidden behind the TV
A streaming stick plugged directly behind a television can have its Wi-Fi signal blocked by the set’s chassis. Roku points users to a free HDMI extender that moves the stick away from the television. Try that placement change before buying other hardware.
Use Ethernet as a diagnostic
If the Roku model has an Ethernet option, connect it to the router and replay the same content. Smooth playback over Ethernet while Wi-Fi continues to buffer is strong evidence that the wireless setup, not the Roku’s menu processor, is the problem. Ethernet improves the path to the internet; it does not make a slow home screen render faster.
TCL Google TV: cache, storage and update steps
Restart and close recent apps
TCL recommends restarting the television and closing recently opened apps when the interface is slow or laggy. Test the home screen and several apps after the restart.

- Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup
- Super-fast startup: Start streaming channels like Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, Sling, and Hulu in a snap—just turn on your TV
- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
- Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote
Choose cache clearing based on the scope
If only one app is slow, open that app’s information page and clear its cache. TCL specifically recommends this single-app approach. If the whole TV or multiple apps are affected, TCL describes an option to clear cached data for all apps. Cache clearing should not be confused with clearing app data: data clearing can reset the app and remove local state.
Update and remove what you do not use
Install pending app updates and check for a system update. Let active downloads and installation finish before judging speed. Removing unused apps can free storage when several apps struggle to open. TCL notes that labels and available options vary by model and software version, so follow the wording shown on your set rather than assuming every TCL Google TV has identical menus.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the network is the real bottleneck
Network troubleshooting is appropriate when the interface responds promptly but streams buffer, content takes a long time to load, playback quality drops or several services fail at once. It is also worth checking when a Roku memory or app-launch message persists after a restart and storage cleanup, because Roku lists connectivity as a possible contributor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImprove the existing Wi-Fi setup first
- Place the router in an open, central position rather than inside a cabinet or behind large objects.
- Reduce distance and obstructions between the router and TV or player.
- Move the streaming stick away from the TV with an HDMI extender when the set blocks the signal.
- Pause other high-bandwidth activity and retest to reveal congestion.
- Try the 5 GHz band when supported and within reliable range; its suitability depends on distance, walls and device support.
- Restart the router, then reconnect the TV or player and repeat the same playback test.
Test a wired connection
Use an Ethernet cable for a supported TV or streaming device when you need a clean comparison. A stable stream over Ethernet with failures on Wi-Fi points to wireless range, interference or congestion. It does not establish that the television’s interface is underpowered, and it will not accelerate menu animation that is slow even with no video playing.

When replacing a router becomes reasonable
Consider a router change only after placement, congestion and Ethernet testing indicate a persistent home-network limitation. Roku notes that routers older than five years may lack the range or speed needed by newer households, and that newer mesh or dual-band systems can help persistent Wi-Fi problems. Verify compatibility with the TV or player and test whether the router is actually the limiting point before spending money.
Compare fixes by risk and diagnostic value
| Action | Targets | Cost | Data or settings risk | What a successful retest tells you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software restart | Temporary system or app-state problems | Free | Low; settings remain | A temporary process was likely involved if menus and apps recover |
| App update or cache clear | One-app slowness, crashes or stale files | Free | Cache clear is low risk; data clear may remove sign-ins and local state | Only the affected app should improve |
| Remove unused apps | Low storage and memory warnings | Free | Removed apps must be installed again if needed | App-launch errors should lessen if storage was the constraint |
| Wi-Fi placement or channel change | Buffering, slow loading and wireless dropouts | Free | Reversible; channel support varies by model | Playback improves without changing menu responsiveness |
| Ethernet cable | Suspected Wi-Fi instability | Optional hardware cost | Reversible; requires a supported port or adapter | Smoother wired playback isolates the wireless path |
| Factory reset | Persistent software configuration faults after other steps | Free, but time-consuming | High; device data, settings and app setup are erased | A clean setup helps distinguish configuration corruption from hardware or network limits |
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
Google warns that a factory reset erases device data. Roku likewise says its factory reset erases settings and requires apps to be set up again. Before choosing it, record Wi-Fi credentials, note installed apps, confirm account passwords and complete the restart, update, storage and network checks above. A reset cannot upgrade a weak processor or repair a poor Wi-Fi signal; it only removes software configuration and local data.
Prevent the lag from returning
- Keep the TV or player’s system and apps current, but let update activity finish before judging performance.
- Uninstall apps and channels you no longer use when storage warnings appear.
- Keep a streaming stick clear of the television’s rear panel and other obstructions.
- Monitor whether future failures affect one app, every app or only playback; that distinction determines the next fix.
- Keep the router in an open location and retest after major changes to household network use.
