Why the $7.99-to-$19.99 comparison needs context
The $19.99 figure is the current U.S. monthly price for Standard without ads. The phrase “from $7.99” is a useful shorthand for the earlier price point in the headline, but the cited historical filing does not independently verify a like-for-like $7.99-to-$19.99 comparison for one unchanged plan. Netflix’s own explanation is that plans and prices may change as it adds shows, movies, or product features, or responds to local market conditions such as taxes and inflation. The company says it sends email and in-product notice one month before an increased charge takes effect. Streaming has become a substantial household expense
A December 2025 affordability snapshot from the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation reported average U.S. streaming spending of $69 per month in 2025 and a 13% year-over-year rise in streaming costs. The committee attributed the spending estimate to recent consumer reports, with an endnote pointing to Statista; it did not conduct a Senate survey. These figures support a narrower conclusion than “streaming now costs more than cable”: the low-cost alternative has become a meaningful recurring bill for many viewers. The Senate snapshot describes streaming as something households often pay for in addition to internet access. It does not provide a like-for-like monthly bill comparison for a particular household.

How to compare your streaming bill with cable
Start with what your household actually watches and pays for, rather than comparing one streaming subscription with a cable package. Add recurring costs for the same month and include any required broadband service if it is not already part of the household’s budget. Then compare the content and features that matter.

- Include internet, taxes, and fees: Streaming generally relies on an internet connection; cable or internet bundles may change the effective price.

- Compare viewing features: Check simultaneous streams, resolution, downloads, and any extra-member allowance rather than treating plans as interchangeable.

There is no universal break-even price in the available figures. A household that uses several ad-free services and pays separately for broadband is comparing a different bundle from one that uses a single ad-supported service or already pays for internet. Cable packages also differ in channels, fees, and bundles, so the result depends on the household’s actual bills and viewing needs.
