Starship launch exclusion zones can extend far beyond the launch site because they are drawn around potential hazards to people, aircraft and vessels—not as a fixed-radius buffer. At Boca Chica, check City of Starbase updates for beach and local road access, Coast Guard notices for water restrictions, and FAA notices for airspace restrictions. These are separate systems, so one green light does not mean every route or area is open.
Why can the exclusion areas reach so far?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines a hazard area as a region of land, sea or air that may need to be surveyed, publicized, controlled or evacuated to manage risk to the public. In the FAA’s words, “Hazard areas are any region of land, sea, or air that must be surveyed, publicized, controlled, or evacuated in order to control the risk to the public.” Its assessment includes areas potentially exposed to hazardous debris from normal flight events as well as reasonably foreseeable failure modes. The boundary therefore depends on the vehicle’s trajectory and potential return profiles, not simply on distance from the pad.

That distinction matters for Starship because a flight can place different portions of the vehicle over different communities, shipping routes and airways. The expected path, possible debris fields and the planned or potential landing location all influence the area that agencies must evaluate. A launch profile that heads generally east over the Gulf does not create the same exposure as one that uses an additional trajectory over Florida or includes a Super Heavy booster return-to-launch-site (RTLS) profile.
The FAA’s February 12, 2026 final Tiered Environmental Assessment evaluates additional launch trajectories and Starship and Super Heavy return profiles from Boca Chica. It is a planning and environmental document, not a promise that every listed trajectory will be flown. Its modeled footprints demonstrate why a simple “miles from the pad” rule cannot describe every mission.

The 1,600-nautical-mile example
For some of the additional, modeled trajectories that pass over Florida, the FAA assessed an airspace span of approximately 1,600 nautical miles. That is a scenario-specific estimate, not the footprint of every Starship launch. The assessment says these scenarios could require closures of dozens of coastal and deep-water airways, with aircraft rerouted.
A distance of that scale does not mean every location within a 1,600-nautical-mile circle is evacuated or that every launch closes all of those routes. It describes the potential length of an evaluated flight and booster-landing hazard area along a particular path. Air traffic managers can use route closures, time windows and rerouting to keep aircraft away from an active hazard area. The practical effect for a traveler may be a changed flight route or delay far from South Texas rather than a local ground closure.
The FAA also estimated that the modeled launch and Super Heavy booster landing hazard areas could affect from 10 commercial aircraft per hour during the lowest midnight traffic period to as many as 200 per hour during peak daily traffic. Those estimates use 2024 commercial-aircraft data and refer to the modeled scenarios; they do not predict the impact of every mission. The figures illustrate why a launch notice can matter to airline operations even when the launch site is remote from a passenger’s airport.

Hazard planning is not limited to a vehicle that breaks apart immediately after liftoff. The FAA definition includes debris generated during normal flight events and reasonably foreseeable failure modes. A normal event can include a planned stage separation or a controlled booster return; a failure mode can involve loss of control, breakup or an off-nominal landing. Agencies evaluate where people, aircraft or vessels could be exposed under those possibilities and then establish controls that match the operational plan.
This is why the area can change from one mission to another. A different inclination, a different downrange target, a planned return maneuver or a revised launch window can change which airways and waters need controls. It also explains why an old map or a remembered closure distance is not a reliable guide to a new launch.
Airspace risk is different from a beach closure
Aircraft restrictions can cover routes far downrange from Boca Chica, while a local road or beach closure concerns access on the ground. The FAA’s airspace notices do not establish whether Boca Chica Beach or State Highway 4 is open. Conversely, an open beach does not tell pilots whether a hazard area or air traffic restriction is active.
For example, an airline passenger may encounter a reroute or a flow-control measure even though the beach remains accessible. A driver may be stopped at a local checkpoint while an aircraft route hundreds of miles away remains open. These outcomes are not contradictory; they reflect separate risk-control systems operated for different users.

The Coast Guard’s final rule identifies explosion, falling debris and hazardous-material release as launch-related hazards to people, vessels and the marine environment. It establishes two permanent mapped maritime safety zones: approximately 4.5 square miles in South Bay and approximately 115 square miles offshore in the Gulf of America. The zones are enforced around launch operations, rather than continuously. The Coast Guard final rule, effective June 4, 2026, explains their boundaries and notice procedures.
“Permanent” in this context refers to the mapped regulatory zones, not a permanent prohibition on boating. The Coast Guard activates enforcement for launch operations. When a zone is active, vessels and people on the water must follow the instructions in the applicable notice and from Coast Guard personnel. When no launch enforcement is in effect, the existence of the mapped zone alone does not establish that the water is closed that day.
The two zones also serve different geographic settings. One is in South Bay, near the launch area and nearby shoreline waters. The larger offshore zone extends into the Gulf and is intended to keep vessels away from the possible downrange hazard environment. The approximate areas—4.5 and 115 square miles—help convey scale, but a mariner should use the coordinates and map in the current notice rather than estimate the boundary from area alone.
Those water restrictions do not themselves close the beach. The Coast Guard says land access to Boca Chica Beach during launch activities is handled separately by SpaceX and local authorities, and points readers to City of Starbase for current and forecasted beach access information. A boat operator, beach visitor and airline passenger therefore need different official checks even when all are planning around the same launch.

Where to check each kind of closure
| What you need to know | Check | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Boca Chica Beach and local land or road access | City of Starbase’s current and forecasted Boca Chica Beach access notices | It does not replace FAA airspace notices or Coast Guard maritime notices. |
| Water access in South Bay and offshore | Coast Guard Broadcast Notices to Mariners on VHF-FM channel 16 and Marine Safety Information Bulletins (MSIBs); when there is sufficient advance notice, a Federal Register Notification of Enforcement | A water-zone notice is not a beach or highway status notice. |
| Aircraft routes and air traffic restrictions | Current FAA Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and FAA Air Traffic System Command Center advisories | These do not establish whether the beach, Highway 4 or a maritime zone is open. |
What each notice is designed to communicate
City of Starbase updates are the practical starting point for someone trying to reach Boca Chica Beach by land. They can identify current or forecasted access conditions and any listed backup dates. They are not an aviation or marine-control document.
Coast Guard Broadcast Notices to Mariners are delivered on VHF-FM channel 16, the channel mariners monitor for navigation safety information. Marine Safety Information Bulletins provide another written notice channel. When there is enough lead time, the Coast Guard may publish a Notification of Enforcement in the Federal Register. A notice can include coordinates and a map, which is more useful than a verbal description when a boat is near the edge of a zone.
FAA NOTAMs and Air Traffic System Command Center advisories address aircraft hazard areas and traffic-management measures. They can describe affected routes, dates, times and possible reroutes. They do not authorize a person to drive onto a closed highway or infer that a beach is open.
How to check Boca Chica access before you travel
- Start with the local land-access notice. Check City of Starbase’s current and forecasted Boca Chica Beach access information for the date you plan to visit. Look for the exact closure date and any backup dates, rather than relying on a general launch announcement. The Coast Guard identifies the city as the source for beach-access updates.
- Check whether Highway 4 is affected. The FAA notes that State Highway 4 crosses Boca Chica Beach, Texas State Parks and the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge, and launch operations can require highway closure. Use the local notice for the applicable date and follow signs and instructions on site; an airspace notice is not a road-status update. A route that appears open on a map can still be controlled temporarily for launch operations.
- If you will be on the water, check Coast Guard notices. Mariners should monitor Broadcast Notices to Mariners on VHF-FM channel 16 and MSIBs. A Federal Register Notification of Enforcement may also appear when advance notice is sufficient. Notices may give coordinates and a map of the activated zones, which helps distinguish restricted water from nearby open areas.
- Match the notice to your activity. A beach visitor needs the land-access update; a recreational or commercial mariner needs the activated-zone notice; and a pilot or airline passenger needs the FAA information. If your trip combines activities, perform all applicable checks. No single channel is a complete all-clear.
- Check the date, time and any alternate window. Read the period covered by the notice and note whether it describes a forecast, a possible restriction or an active enforcement period. Launch windows and backup dates can be tentative, so do not assume that a notice for one date automatically applies to the next day.
- If you are flying, check FAA aviation notices. Look for current NOTAMs and FAA Air Traffic System Command Center advisories covering the relevant date and routes. These are the appropriate sources for aviation hazard areas and traffic measures, not for local beach access.
- Recheck close to departure. Launch windows are tentative and weather-dependent, and closure notices can change. Confirm the local, maritime or aviation notice relevant to your trip again near the travel date, then obey current agency and law-enforcement instructions.
The cited agency material does not establish one dashboard that combines current beach, road, maritime and airspace status. Check each channel that applies to your plans rather than treating any single notice as a complete all-clear.

Driving to watch from land: Check City of Starbase first, then verify whether State Highway 4 is listed as closed or controlled for the date and time you intend to travel. If the notice lists a backup date, treat it as a possibility rather than a guarantee. On arrival, follow posted signs and law-enforcement directions even if an online forecast still shows access.
Planning to launch a boat: Read the Coast Guard notice for the active zone, its coordinates and enforcement period. Monitor VHF-FM channel 16 for Broadcast Notices to Mariners. Do not use an open-beach notice as evidence that offshore water is open; the land and water decisions are separate.
Taking an airline flight: Check the current FAA NOTAMs and Air Traffic System Command Center advisories for the route and date. A reroute or delay may reflect an aircraft hazard area far from Boca Chica. These notices cannot answer whether a friend can reach the beach by road.
Combining a beach visit with a flight or boat trip: Complete all three checks. A favorable result in one system does not override a restriction in another.
How to read a launch notice without mistaking it for a schedule
Notices can describe a tentative window, possible restrictions or contingency dates; they are not necessarily confirmation that a launch will occur at a particular time. Read the notice’s date and stated period, identify whether it concerns land, water or airspace, and distinguish a forecast from an activated restriction. If it is an older advisory, it is evidence of how a notice communicates possible impacts—not proof of a current launch plan.
Pay attention to operational wording. “Possible” or “planned” measures describe what could happen if a launch proceeds. An enforcement notice or an instruction broadcast during operations indicates that a zone is being controlled. A map may show the full regulatory boundary, while the notice’s dates and times explain when that boundary is actually enforced.
For example, an FAA Air Traffic System Command Center pre-mission advisory dated July 16, 2026 described a tentative Flight 13 launch and possible air traffic management measures. Its date makes it a historical example, not a current schedule. The notice is available at the FAA advisory page; check current notices for current travel or flight decisions.

Weather can move a launch window, and a changed launch date can move the associated closure period. Recheck after any postponement rather than assuming the previous restrictions remain in force or that a canceled operation means every local access point immediately reopens.
What earlier environmental commitments do—and do not—mean
In a June 13, 2022 announcement, the FAA said its then-current environmental review required SpaceX to take more than 75 actions to mitigate environmental impacts. That figure belongs to the 2022 review and is not a count of current closure requirements or a day-of-launch access update. The announcement is available in the FAA’s 2022 mitigation notice.
Mitigation commitments and launch-day controls answer different questions. A mitigation action can address environmental effects over an operating period; a closure notice tells the public whether a particular road, beach, water area or airway is controlled at a particular time. Neither the number of mitigation actions nor the existence of an environmental review tells a visitor that access is open today.
Common mistakes that cause confusion
- Using a fixed-radius rule. Hazard areas follow trajectories and potential debris exposure, so distance from the pad alone is not a sufficient test.
- Treating a map as an active closure. The Coast Guard’s mapped zones are enforced around launches. Check the current notice for activation and timing.
- Assuming the Coast Guard closes the beach. Its rule controls water areas. City of Starbase and local authorities handle land access during launch activities.
- Using a flight advisory to decide whether to drive. FAA airspace information does not establish Highway 4 or beach status.
- Relying on an old launch date. A July 2026 pre-mission advisory is not a current schedule, and launch windows can change.
- Checking only one channel. Visitors who cross from land to water, or who coordinate a beach trip with an airline itinerary, need more than one notice system.
- Ignoring on-site instructions. Current signs, law-enforcement directions and agency broadcasts control in the field, even when an earlier online forecast suggested access.
Frequently asked questions
Why are Starship launch exclusion zones so large?
They are based on potential exposure to hazardous debris and other launch risks across land, sea and air, including normal flight events and reasonably foreseeable failures. Trajectory and booster or ship return profiles can place the evaluated hazard area far downrange, so it is not a fixed circle around Boca Chica.
Is Boca Chica Beach closed for every Starship launch?
Not necessarily. Land access is handled separately by SpaceX and local authorities. Check City of Starbase’s current and forecasted Boca Chica Beach access information for the specific date. A Coast Guard water-zone notice does not by itself answer the beach question.

Is Highway 4 open during a launch?
It may be closed or controlled when launch operations require it. The FAA notes that State Highway 4 crosses Boca Chica Beach, Texas State Parks and the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge. Check the local access notice for the date and follow posted instructions.
Where do I check Boca Chica beach closures?
Start with City of Starbase’s current and forecasted Boca Chica Beach access updates. The Coast Guard’s final rule specifically directs readers there for beach information.
How do I check whether the water is closed?
Monitor Coast Guard Broadcast Notices to Mariners on VHF-FM channel 16 and Marine Safety Information Bulletins. When feasible, the Coast Guard also publishes a Federal Register Notification of Enforcement. Use the coordinates and map in the applicable notice.
Do the maritime zones stay closed all the time?
The Coast Guard established permanent mapped zones, but says they are enforced only during actual launches. The current launch notice determines whether and when access is restricted.
Can a launch affect my airline flight far from Texas?
It can. In modeled Florida-overflight scenarios, the FAA assessed an airspace span of approximately 1,600 nautical miles and estimated that 10 to 200 commercial aircraft per hour could be affected, depending on traffic period. Those are scenario estimates based on 2024 aircraft data, not a forecast for every mission.
What is the best single website for all closure information?
The cited agency material does not identify one dashboard combining beach, road, maritime and aviation status. Check City of Starbase, Coast Guard notices and FAA NOTAMs or Air Traffic System Command Center advisories according to your activity.

Does a launch announcement confirm the launch will happen?
No. Notices may describe a tentative window, possible restrictions or backup dates. Weather and operations can change the plan. Treat a past advisory as an example of notice format, not as a current schedule.
Bottom line
Starship exclusion zones are large because agencies plan for the actual risk envelope: debris from normal events and foreseeable failures across the vehicle’s trajectory, possible return profiles and affected airways and waters. The FAA’s 2026 assessment includes modeled areas stretching about 1,600 nautical miles and aircraft-impact estimates of 10 to 200 commercial aircraft per hour in particular scenarios. Separately, the Coast Guard’s 2026 rule maps maritime zones of approximately 4.5 square miles in South Bay and 115 square miles offshore, enforcing them around launches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Starship launch exclusion zones so large?
They account for potential debris and other hazards across land, sea and air, including normal flight events and reasonably foreseeable failures. Trajectory and return profiles determine the footprint, not a fixed radius.
Is Boca Chica Beach closed for every launch?
No. Land access is managed separately by SpaceX and local authorities. Check City of Starbase’s current and forecasted beach-access information for the date you plan to visit.
Where can I check Highway 4 status?
Use the local City of Starbase access notice and follow posted signs and law-enforcement instructions. FAA airspace notices do not establish whether Highway 4 is open.
How do mariners check active launch zones?
Monitor Coast Guard Broadcast Notices to Mariners on VHF-FM channel 16 and Marine Safety Information Bulletins. A Federal Register enforcement notice may also be published when advance notice is sufficient.
Can Starship operations affect airline flights far from Texas?
Yes. FAA modeling for certain Florida-overflight trajectories assessed an approximately 1,600-nautical-mile airspace span and estimated effects on 10 to 200 commercial aircraft per hour in different traffic periods. These are scenario-specific estimates.
Are the Coast Guard’s maritime zones always closed?
No. The zones are permanently mapped but enforced only around actual launches. Check the current Coast Guard notice for activation and timing.
Is there one dashboard showing every closure?
No single consolidated dashboard is identified. Check City of Starbase for land access, Coast Guard notices for water and FAA NOTAMs or Air Traffic System Command Center advisories for aviation.
Does an FAA pre-mission advisory guarantee a launch date?
No. Such advisories can describe tentative windows and possible traffic measures. Dates and restrictions can change with weather and operations, so use current notices.
The Bottom Line
Starship exclusion zones follow potential debris, trajectory and return risks rather than a fixed radius. Check City of Starbase for beach and Highway 4 access, Coast Guard notices for water, and FAA NOTAMs or Air Traffic System Command Center advisories for aviation. Recheck close to travel and follow current on-site instructions.
