Star Wars Genesis is an open-world RPG because it gives you control over allegiance, character role, exploration and long-term progression instead of funneling every player through one Jedi hero’s campaign. It is a free, fan-made total-conversion modlist for the Steam PC version of Starfield, not a standalone Star Wars game. Genesis replaces much of the underlying game’s identity with its own factions, locations, quests, Force abilities, equipment, music and endgame systems, while remaining an unfinished work in progress.
What Star Wars Genesis actually is
Genesis is best understood as a large-scale conversion of Starfield, assembled as a curated modlist rather than released as an independent executable. The project is free, single-player, offline and non-commercial, but it cannot run without the compatible Steam PC installation of Starfield. Its own lore is separate from official Star Wars continuity, even though it uses familiar ideas such as the Empire, Rebellion, Jedi-style powers and galactic travel.

This distinction explains why Genesis can feel like a new RPG while still having demanding installation requirements. You are not downloading a self-contained game from a store. You are preparing a specific version of Starfield and letting Wabbajack assemble a large collection of files, patches and configuration changes. The result is intended to be a Star Wars-flavored role-playing sandbox, not a cosmetic character pack.

SaleStar Wars: Heritage Pack - Nintendo Switch
- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
That stated goal is the key to Genesis’s design. A few lightsabers or replacement textures would not make an open-world RPG. Genesis changes the choices you make, the activities available between missions and the way your character continues to develop after the main story beats.
Why its structure is genuinely open-world
You choose an allegiance, not just a costume
Genesis lets you align with the Empire, support the Rebellion or follow an independent route. Those choices are more consequential than selecting a cosmetic background because they shape the kinds of quests and conflicts you pursue. The project includes faction storylines rather than one mandatory campaign that treats every player as the same protagonist.
That breadth supports several role fantasies. A player can build toward a Force-focused combatant, a faction operative, a ship-focused explorer, a scavenger, a crafter or an independent adventurer. The point is not that every path has identical content; it is that the game does not require every player to become the same Jedi character before the world opens up.

Exploration is a continuing activity
Genesis converts locations across the galaxy and adds unique destinations, quests, enemy factions, bosses, ships and weapons. Exploration therefore serves more than the purpose of moving between authored levels. You can leave a main objective to investigate a location, collect equipment, pursue a side quest, improve a ship or test a different combat build.
This is the major structural difference from a level-based Jedi adventure. In a directed game, the next area and major encounter are usually selected by the campaign. In Genesis, the world is a menu of possible commitments. You decide which faction thread to advance, which systems to upgrade and when to return to the central story.

Progression continues outside the main quest
Crafting, gear progression, ship ownership, Force abilities and an expanding endgame give you reasons to keep playing after a mission is complete. These systems interact: exploration can provide equipment, equipment can support a different combat approach, and faction or side content can open another route through the sandbox.
The endgame is described as expanding rather than fixed. That wording matters. Genesis is designed to support a long tail of activities, but it is not claiming the fully bounded, content-complete postgame of a finished commercial release. Its open-world quality comes from the number of systems that can be combined and revisited, not from a promise that every corner has a bespoke story.
How Genesis differs from a linear Jedi game
| Comparison axis | Star Wars Genesis | Linear Jedi-style campaign |
|---|---|---|
| Player role | Empire, Rebellion or independent paths, with several role fantasies | Primarily one authored Jedi-centered hero |
| World structure | Galaxy-wide exploration, faction activities and systemic side pursuits | Directed levels connected by campaign beats |
| Progression | Force abilities, crafting, gear, ships and continuing sandbox development | A narrower progression arc tied closely to the story |
| Narrative state | Expanding fan project with an incomplete overall experience | Finished commercial story designed around a defined ending |
| How you obtain it | Free modlist requiring a compatible PC game, expansion and setup process | Install and launch a conventional game release |
| Continuity | Original fan universe inspired by Star Wars concepts | Official continuity for the specific licensed title |
Games such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor are useful reference points for the “linear Jedi game” description, even though they include optional exploration. Their campaigns are built around a defined protagonist and authored sequence of major events. Genesis trades some of that narrative concentration for agency over allegiance, travel and activity selection.
The trade-off is important: more systemic freedom does not automatically mean a denser story. Genesis can offer more ways to spend an evening, while a conventional Jedi campaign can deliver more polished pacing, character development and cinematic payoff per hour. Calling Genesis open-world describes its structure, not a claim that it is more complete or better written than a finished licensed game.
What content the conversion adds
The conversion changes the parts of Starfield that determine what the player is doing and why. Reported additions include a new main questline, original quest content, Force powers, replacement weapons and music, improved enemy AI, new factions, bosses and locations. These are functional changes to missions and combat, not simply a Star Wars-themed visual layer.

Faction storylines provide the backbone for replayable identity. Unique locations and side quests give exploration a purpose, while new enemy groups and bosses create encounters that fit the converted setting. Ships and equipment support the spacefaring and collection aspects of the sandbox. Crafting and gear progression then give those discoveries a mechanical use.

Updates, load-order issues or an incompatible base installation can prevent the list from working. Genesis’s ambition is comparable to a total conversion, but its delivery method remains a technical modding project.
How much playable content is there?
A 2026 guide estimates roughly 20–30 hours for the structured story and another 10–20 hours for progression-focused sandbox play. That estimate covers the listed Acts 1 and 2, complete Rebel and Imperial questlines, side quests and open-ended activities. It should be treated as a planning range rather than a guaranteed runtime: exploration choices, difficulty and time spent on crafting or collecting will change the total.
The project is explicitly unfinished or still expanding. “Complete” in this context means that the identified faction questlines and acts are playable, not that every planned story, location or endgame feature has shipped. Players who want a self-contained beginning-to-ending Star Wars narrative should account for that limitation before installing.
What you must install before playing
Genesis has a narrower compatibility target than an ordinary PC game. Prepare the following items before starting the modlist process:

- A new hero, a story untold in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years
- The ultimate battleground
- Galactic scale space combat: Space combat has been designed for Star Wars Battlefront II from the ground up with distinct handling, weapons and customization options
- Battery: No battery used
- The Steam PC version of Starfield.
- The Shattered Space expansion.
- Windows configured in English, as required by the guide.
- Wabbajack to download and assemble the list.
- A Nexus account for the authentication step used by Wabbajack.
- An internal NVMe drive for the installation.
- A clean, compatible profile rather than an already heavily modified Starfield setup.
An Xbox installation does not satisfy the researched requirement. Genesis is tied to the Steam PC edition, and the guide does not identify console support.
Installation sequence
- Install the base game and expansion. Install the Steam PC edition of Starfield and add Shattered Space before touching the modlist.
- Set the game environment to English. The guide lists English settings as a prerequisite, so change the game and relevant system language settings before validation.
- Start from a clean profile. Remove conflicting mods and avoid reusing a profile with custom files that can alter the expected load order.
- Prepare internal NVMe storage. Place the game and Genesis installation on an internal NVMe drive; do not assume an external or slower volume will meet the guide’s compatibility target.
- Install Wabbajack and authenticate Nexus. Wabbajack automates much of the download and assembly, while Nexus authentication supplies access to the required files.
- Let the list finish assembling before launching. Do not open the game halfway through the process or add unrelated mods before the list has completed and its profile is selected.
Wabbajack removes much of the manual copying and load-order work, but it does not turn Genesis into a one-click standalone product. You still need the correct game edition, expansion, storage, language and profile, and you remain responsible for preserving that environment when troubleshooting.
Can you play Genesis on Steam Deck or ROG Ally?
The current guide lists both Steam Deck and ROG Ally as incompatible. Genesis therefore targets a Windows desktop or laptop that meets the listed storage and software requirements, not handheld installation through a compatibility layer. Even if a handheld can launch the underlying game, that does not establish support for the Genesis list, its dependencies or its expected performance.
This limitation also affects buying decisions. Do not purchase a console copy of Starfield expecting it to unlock Genesis, and do not assume that owning the game on another PC storefront will satisfy the Steam-specific requirement. The project’s technical foundation is the particular Steam PC build identified by its guide.
Canon, ownership and project status
Genesis uses its own lore and universe rather than adding an official chapter to Star Wars canon. It is not a Lucasfilm, Disney or Electronic Arts release, and it should not be presented as an endorsed product. Its free, offline and non-commercial status describes how the fan project is distributed; it does not make the project an official licensed game.

The official project site says that thousands of people worldwide have installed and enjoyed Genesis over the past two years. That is a statement from the project itself, not an independently audited user count. The same site presents Genesis as a continuing project, so features, balance and supported configurations may change as development proceeds.
Who should choose Genesis?
Genesis is a strong fit if your priority is agency: choosing a side, roaming between converted locations, experimenting with Force and equipment builds, flying ships and continuing to develop a character after the main missions. It is especially appealing to players who already own the required PC version of Starfield and are comfortable maintaining a modded installation.
A conventional Jedi game is the safer choice if you want a polished, complete campaign with a single protagonist, tightly authored pacing and no technical assembly. Genesis asks you to accept an expanding story, a fan-made continuity and a more involved setup in exchange for a broader role-playing sandbox.
- Choose Genesis for: faction choice, independent play, exploration, systemic progression and replayable role-building.
- Choose a linear Jedi campaign for: a finished narrative, guided level design, consistent cinematic pacing and straightforward installation.
- Wait or research compatibility further if: you only have a console or handheld, lack the Steam PC edition and expansion, or do not want to troubleshoot a modlist.
Common setup problems and what they mean
Wabbajack cannot complete the list
Check the Steam edition, the Shattered Space expansion, Nexus authentication, English settings and available internal NVMe space. A missing prerequisite can look like a download failure even when the underlying issue is an incompatible installation.
The game launches with missing content or unexpected behavior
Return to the clean-profile requirement. Remove extra mods and custom files, select the Genesis profile created by Wabbajack and launch only after the assembly has completed. Mixing an existing load order with the curated list can produce conflicts that are not part of the intended configuration.
You are trying to use a handheld or non-Steam copy
The researched compatibility guidance does not support Steam Deck, ROG Ally or an Xbox version. Changing graphics settings cannot solve a platform or edition mismatch; the issue is the supported foundation of the modlist.
The practical answer
Star Wars Genesis is an open-world RPG in the structural sense: it gives the player allegiance choices, multiple roles, galaxy-scale exploration and progression systems that remain useful beyond individual missions. It is not a linear Jedi game because becoming one fixed hero and following one prescribed campaign is not the only way to play. The cost of that freedom is equally clear: Genesis is a fan-made, separate-lore, still-expanding modlist that requires the right Steam PC foundation and a technical installation process.
