X says its For You feed uses signals such as accounts and Topics you follow, engagement, and activity in your network. You can reduce recommendations with feedback and interest controls, or switch to Following for a more predictable chronological stream.
Why you may be seeing so much sports content
X describes For You as a ranked mix that can include posts from accounts you follow and recommendations from outside your network. Its documented recommendation signals include followed accounts and Topics, posts liked by you or people in your network, and accounts followed by people in that network. X also says its recommendations learn from interactions such as likes, reposts, and replies. X’s For You recommendations explanation and its general recommendations policy describe these inputs.

Those signals make a sports-heavy feed plausible if you follow sports accounts or Topics, interact with sports posts, or people in your network engage with sports content. X says Topics reflect conversation volume and health, which can also help explain why a subject appears when it is active. These are possible mechanisms, not a diagnosis of your account: X does not publish sports-specific ranking weights or say that sports receive a special boost. Its public documentation also does not establish that sports dominate every user’s feed.
In its recommendations guidance, X says: “The more you engage with content on >x<, the better our recommendations get at delivering this positive user experience.” That is X’s general description of how recommendations respond to engagement, not a promise that any one interaction will cause a specific post or topic to appear.

For You vs. Following
| Timeline | What X documents | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| For You | Posts from followed accounts and Topics, plus personalized recommendations that can include posts from outside your network. X Help Center | Discovery and a personalized mix |
| Following | Posts from accounts you follow, in reverse chronological order. X Help Center | A more predictable, chronological stream |
Switching to Following reduces the role of recommendations compared with For You, but X notes that timeline content can still include promoted posts or reposts. Do not treat either mode as a guarantee that every sports post or advertisement will disappear.
How to get fewer sports posts
1. Use Following for a chronological stream
Select the Following timeline instead of For You. X describes Following as showing posts from accounts you follow in reverse chronological order. The available labels and their placement can vary by device, app version, or location; consult X’s timeline guide if the interface looks different.

2. Give feedback on recommendations
On an unwanted For You post, use “Not interested in this post” or “Not interested in this Topic” when available. X says this feedback helps it recommend less content of that type. Its control guide also describes “Show less often” as feedback that may help tailor future recommendations. A single selection is not a guarantee of a permanent change, and wording or availability may vary. See X’s recommendations guidance and control guide.

3. Unfollow sports Topics and review interests
Unfollow Topics you no longer want to follow. You can also review interests through Interests in Your X data and opt out of interests that are no longer relevant. X says interest changes may take time to take effect, and content about a Topic can still appear for another reason—for example, because an account you follow is discussing it. Topic controls are described in X’s Topics guide.

4. Mute terms or accounts
Mute recurring sports terms, hashtags, or account names that you do not want to see. X says muted words apply to notifications and the Home timeline. Muting an account removes its posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it; unfollow an account if you no longer want its posts in your feed. Review X’s controls guide for the current options and limits.
5. Review the accounts and Topics shaping your network
Check the sports accounts you follow directly, along with sports Topics you follow and relevant Lists. X identifies followed accounts, Topics, and network activity as recommendation inputs, so curating them can help shift what For You recommends. It cannot ensure every sports post disappears, because recommendations can draw on multiple signals.

What to expect from these changes
- For You is personalized; Following is the more controlled chronological option.
- Feedback, interest settings, mutes, and account changes address different parts of the experience. Choose the control that matches the source of the posts you want to reduce.
- Changes may not be immediate, and one setting cannot prevent all sports content from appearing in every timeline context.
