Why Speech-to-Text Failed My Grandma—and What It Takes to Fix It

Speech-to-text can fail for a particular speaker without that failure proving older people cannot use speech recognition. The account behind “My grandma broke every speech-to-text app, so I fixed the app” does not identify the apps, the errors, or the change that solved them. Those specifics cannot be responsibly filled in. Research does show why speech recognition may struggle with voices or speaking patterns that differ from the audio used to train a system—and why a fix should be tested on the person and task it is meant to help.

What the title does—and does not—establish

The title describes a personal engineering story: a grandmother encountered failures with speech-to-text, and the author changed or built an app. It does not establish which app was involved, what the errors looked like, what was changed, or whether the change improved results in a measured test. Without that account, attributing a technical cause or fix would be guesswork.

“Every app” should also be read as the author’s description of their experience, not as evidence that all speech-to-text applications fail for older people. Recognition depends on the speaker, the recording conditions, the language, and the words or task being recognized. Age alone is not a demonstrated explanation for this particular story.

Why a speech recognizer may struggle with a speaker

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) converts an audio signal into text. Systems learn patterns from training audio, but a real speaker’s pronunciation, voice quality, speaking rate, pauses, microphone, and surroundings may differ from those patterns. That mismatch is a plausible source of errors; it does not identify the cause in any one app or recording.

Older voices are not one uniform category

A 2012 study involving 19 older adults with age-related hearing loss tested human listeners, not speech-to-text apps. In quiet, listeners showed no significant speech-recognition difference depending on whether phrases came from younger or older speakers, although perceived listening effort was higher for older speakers. The study therefore cannot be used to claim that ASR fails on older voices. Its result also cautions against treating speaker age as a simple stand-in for intelligibility or recognition accuracy. Read the study record on PubMed.

Evidence from particular groups is informative, but limited

A 2023 study examined open-source ASR systems with adults aged 80 and older who had possible cognitive impairments. The authors reported that systems trained on adult speech were susceptible to acoustic mismatch with this target population, and that transfer learning improved performance in their experiment. They used 12 hours of training recordings from the target population; an additional attention-based approach improved results by 1.58% absolute over the transfer-learning model. Those figures describe that study’s setup, not an expected gain for another speaker or app. Read the open-access study.

A 2026 CHI paper evaluated 83 older adults across cognitive groups and reported higher ASR errors for participants with dementia. In that study, intensity, voice quality, and pause ratio predicted accuracy. The finding is specific to the study population and systems; it should not be generalized to all older adults or used to infer that a grandmother in an unrelated story had dementia. What researchers have tried—and what the results mean

Adaptation to the target speaker or population

Transfer learning uses a model already trained on speech and adapts it with additional data. The 2023 study provides evidence that this approach can help in its tested setting, where the target group’s speech differed acoustically from adult training data. It does not establish that the app in the title used transfer learning, that it had access to the grandmother’s recordings, or that adaptation was the author’s fix.

Preprocessing the audio

A 2016 paper on elderly speech recognition for smart devices reported a 12% recognition-accuracy increase after its tested preprocessing steps, which included changes involving speaking rate, intersyllabic pauses, and formant-band energy. That is one experiment’s cumulative result, not a universal benefit. It is also not a reason to make an older user change their natural speaking style: preprocessing audio and asking a person to speak differently are not the same intervention. Read the 2016 paper.

Earlier work also examined automatic speech recognition for ageing voices, but its existence alone does not identify the cause or solution in this story. See the University of Edinburgh thesis record.

How to tell whether a fix actually helped

A convincing account of an app fix needs more than a successful demonstration. Recognition can vary with the recording and the words spoken, so a useful evaluation holds the task as steady as possible and reports what changed.

  • Identify the system and task: name the application or recognizer, the device and microphone, the language, and whether the test was dictation, conversation, or another task.
  • Show representative errors: give examples of what the speaker said and what the system returned, without implying that a few examples represent every use.
  • Compare equivalent recordings: use the same speaker and comparable audio conditions before and after the change. If multiple systems are compared, use the same audio and transcription task for each.
  • Describe the intervention: distinguish model adaptation using the speaker’s data from audio preprocessing, interface changes, or human correction of transcripts.
  • Report the measure and limits: explain how accuracy was assessed, whether transcripts were corrected by a person, and how many recordings or words were evaluated. A result from one speaker or session does not establish performance for a broader population.

These are the details needed to judge a particular fix; they are not confirmed details about the app in the title.

What readers can conclude

The title points to a real and useful engineering question: how can speech recognition work better for a person whose voice or speaking patterns are poorly represented by a system? Studies suggest acoustic mismatch, adaptation, and preprocessing are relevant areas to investigate. They do not reveal which problem the author encountered or how the reported app was fixed. The sound conclusion is narrower: speech-to-text should be evaluated with the intended speaker and task, and claims about a specific solution need the app’s actual failure examples and test results.
