Why Spacecraft Are Sent to the Ocean Near Point Nemo

Spacecraft are sometimes guided into the remote South Pacific at the end of their missions because some parts can survive atmospheric reentry. A controlled deorbit lets operators place the expected debris footprint over an uninhabited ocean region instead of allowing an uncontrolled fall that could reach populated land. “Point Nemo” is a useful name for this remote area, but missions are not aimed at one exact ocean coordinate.

Why use the ocean near Point Nemo?

The central reason is public safety. NASA’s Orbital Debris Program Office distinguishes between an uncontrolled atmospheric entry, in which natural drag determines when and where a spacecraft comes down, and a controlled entry, in which operators spend propellant to shape the final trajectory. A controlled maneuver makes the flight path steeper and the reentry location more predictable, allowing the surviving debris footprint to be placed over an uninhabited ocean area.

That does not mean the spacecraft vanishes before reaching the sea. Friction and aerodynamic heating destroy or vaporize much of the structure, but dense, compact or heat-resistant components can survive and fall through the atmosphere. Directing those pieces toward a remote ocean greatly reduces the chance that they will hit people, buildings, roads or other infrastructure.

NASA describes the objective for the International Space Station in similar terms: responsible reentry of the station’s structure into an unpopulated area of the ocean. The water is therefore a risk-management target, not a disposal method that guarantees zero debris or zero environmental effect.

Where is Point Nemo?

NOAA defines Point Nemo as the location in the ocean farthest from land. Its published coordinates are 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, roughly 2,688 kilometers from the nearest land points. The point lies in the South Pacific, far from major population centers and shipping routes.

Those coordinates identify a geographic point, not a giant landing pad. A real reentry produces a long, oval-shaped debris footprint because fragments spread along the ground track and across the atmosphere. Operators target a broad uninhabited region around the point rather than attempting to hit 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W precisely.

NASA educational material sometimes calls the region a “spacecraft cemetery.” The nickname refers to the remote South Pacific disposal area, not to a formally surveyed boundary or a single set of coordinates.

How a controlled deorbit works

1. Determine whether reentry is appropriate

Mission planners first examine the spacecraft’s orbit, remaining propellant, structure and expected lifetime. A low satellite may naturally lose altitude through atmospheric drag and eventually reenter. A high-orbit spacecraft can remain in space for a very long time; in that case, moving it to a higher “graveyard” orbit may require less fuel than bringing it back to Earth.

The disposal choice also depends on how much hardware is likely to survive, whether the vehicle can still perform accurate burns, and what safety requirements apply to the mission.

2. Lower the orbit and select the ground track

For a controlled entry, thrusters reduce orbital energy and lower the perigee, the low point of the orbit. The spacecraft then passes through denser air on each revolution. Operators time additional burns so that the final pass crosses the selected ocean region. A steeper entry angle generally shortens the time and distance over which debris can spread, improving control of the footprint.

NASA summarizes the trade-off this way: controlled entry normally requires more propellant and a larger propulsion system than simply allowing natural decay. The extra fuel buys precision, not certainty. Weather, atmospheric density and small navigation errors still affect the exact impact pattern.

3. Model the surviving debris

Engineers use the spacecraft’s mass, shape, materials and breakup behavior to estimate which pieces may reach the surface. Tanks, reaction wheels, batteries, gyroscopes and other dense components are more likely to survive than thin panels or insulation. The resulting estimate is a footprint rather than a single impact point, and planners choose an area large enough to contain that uncertainty.

4. Perform the final burn

Once the spacecraft is aligned with the target ground track, a final propulsion maneuver commits it to reentry. Ground controllers continue tracking the vehicle and update predictions as it encounters the upper atmosphere. Most of the structure burns up; any fragments that remain fall within the projected ocean corridor.

What happens to the ISS when it is deorbited?

The International Space Station is too large to be left to an unpredictable natural fall. NASA’s transition plan combines natural orbital decay with deliberate altitude-lowering maneuvers. After the crew has returned, operators will use propulsion to line up the station’s ground track and debris footprint, then command a final deorbit burn.

The planned target

A NASA Office of Procurement vignette published in 2025 describes the ISS target as an uninhabited South Pacific region with a debris footprint of 6,000 kilometers or less. That figure describes the maximum length of the expected footprint in the procurement requirement; it is not the distance from Point Nemo to a shoreline and not a claim that every fragment will land at one point.

The deorbit vehicle

NASA says a dedicated U.S. Deorbit Vehicle is being developed and delivered by SpaceX under a contract awarded in June 2024. The vehicle is intended to provide the propulsion and navigation capability needed for the station’s final disposal. Implementation details and the retirement schedule can change, so NASA’s current transition-plan information should be checked before relying on a specific date or vehicle status.

Will the whole station burn up?

No. NASA expects most station hardware to burn or vaporize, while some denser or heat-resistant components may survive and splash down. The point of the plan is to keep those remnants in an unpopulated ocean area, not to promise complete destruction.

Do all old satellites go to Point Nemo?

No. Disposal depends on orbit, spacecraft capability and mission rules. Point Nemo is mainly associated with large, low-Earth-orbit objects for which a controlled ocean entry is practical and worthwhile.

Situation Typical approach Why it is chosen
Low-orbit spacecraft with little remaining fuel Uncontrolled natural decay, when acceptable Atmospheric drag eventually causes reentry without a dedicated disposal burn, but the final location cannot be guaranteed.
Large spacecraft that can maneuver after its mission Controlled reentry over a remote ocean Extra propellant narrows the possible impact area and reduces exposure of populated land to surviving debris.
High-orbit spacecraft Move to a higher disposal or “graveyard” orbit At high altitude, raising the orbit may require less fuel than lowering it enough for atmospheric reentry.
Spacecraft with no usable propulsion Natural decay or another mission-specific disposal plan Controllers cannot perform the burns needed to target a particular ocean region.

NASA’s educational explanations emphasize that no single disposal method fits every spacecraft. Orbit altitude, remaining fuel, expected debris survival, controllability and public-safety constraints all matter.

Uncontrolled versus controlled reentry

Uncontrolled entry

When a vehicle is abandoned in low orbit, trace atmospheric drag gradually reduces its altitude. Solar activity changes the density of the upper atmosphere, so the decay rate can vary. The spacecraft may break up at an uncertain time and location. Even if most of it burns, operators cannot guarantee that the surviving pieces will avoid land.

Controlled entry

A controlled entry uses propulsion to lower the orbit faster and select the final ground track. The maneuver consumes fuel and requires a functioning guidance system, but it converts a broad, uncertain hazard into a planned footprint over an uninhabited region. The result is risk reduction, not risk elimination.

What are the historical examples?

Mir, 2001

Russia’s Mir space station was deorbited in a staged operation on March 23, 2001. A Progress vehicle first lowered Mir’s orbit. It then fired its engines for approximately 22 minutes to commit the station to reentry over the South Pacific. NASA’s account describes the sequence as a controlled disposal that directed the station’s remnants away from inhabited land.

Europe’s Automated Transfer Vehicles

The European Space Agency reports that all five of its Automated Transfer Vehicle missions performed controlled reentries into an uninhabited South Pacific area after completing their cargo deliveries to the ISS. These missions illustrate why the region is used repeatedly: it offers a large, remote ocean corridor suitable for planned footprints.

Why not aim at any empty ocean?

Remote ocean regions are not interchangeable. Planners need enough distance from land, predictable tracking geometry and a footprint that can be monitored. A target must also avoid shipping and aviation activity as far as practical. The South Pacific area associated with Point Nemo combines extreme remoteness with orbital paths that can be reached by certain low-Earth-orbit missions.

Point Nemo itself is a geographic reference that helps communicate this remoteness. The actual safety analysis uses a much larger area, detailed trajectory predictions and current information about vessels, aircraft and weather.

How much danger remains?

A controlled reentry substantially lowers the probability of a land impact compared with an uncontrolled decay, but it does not make the operation risk-free. Predictions have uncertainty, fragments can spread, and the atmosphere is not perfectly predictable. Agencies therefore issue warnings and coordinate tracking around the expected time of reentry.

Environmental effects are also described cautiously. NASA expects the effects of a planned ocean reentry to be small compared with the public-safety benefit, but that is an agency projection rather than proof that an event has no environmental impact. The responsible claim is that the procedure concentrates a limited, modeled risk in a remote region.

How operators decide on a disposal method

  1. Orbit: Estimate how quickly natural drag will cause reentry and whether the orbit can be lowered economically.
  2. Vehicle condition: Confirm that propulsion, guidance, communications and power will remain available through the disposal sequence.
  3. Surviving mass: Model which components could reach the surface and how far the debris might spread.
  4. Footprint control: Calculate whether the final ground track can be placed over an uninhabited region with adequate margin.
  5. Mission constraints: Balance fuel, spacecraft design, crew-return timing, tracking requirements and public-safety rules.

This framework explains why one spacecraft is guided toward a remote ocean while another is left to decay or moved to a higher orbit. The destination follows from the vehicle’s orbit and capabilities, not from a universal rule that every retired satellite must be sent to Point Nemo.
