Why Some Teachers Give Up on Students Who Don’t Do Their Homework

Some teachers may treat missing homework as a sign that a student or family is not making enough effort—even when they recognize that students have unequal access to help at home. A 2022 study of one suburban public-school district describes how that interpretation, combined with assignments students could not always complete independently and penalties for missing work, can reinforce educational inequality. It does not show how often teachers nationwide give up on students.

What the study found

In “You Need to Be More Responsible”: The Myth of Meritocracy and Teachers’ Accounts of Homework Inequalities, Jessica McCrory Calarco, Ilana S. Horn, and Grace A. Chen examine how teachers understood differences in students’ homework completion. The peer-reviewed article appeared in Educational Researcher and was first published online on July 15, 2022. Read the study.

The authors report a tension: teachers acknowledged that some children had less support at home, but homework gaps were also explained in terms of responsibility, effort, and motivation. Some assignments were difficult for students to complete on their own, while completed homework could earn grades or rewards and missing work could bring reprimands or penalties. The authors argue that these practices may reinforce inequality; they do not claim that every teacher consciously intends to disadvantage students.

How the research was conducted—and what it can establish

This was a longitudinal ethnographic study of elementary- and middle-school mathematics homework in one suburban public-school district. Researchers followed about 100 students from Grade 3 through Grade 7, using classroom observations, interviews, and student records. An explanatory article by Calarco and Horn reports that 22 teachers were interviewed and observed. Calarco and Horn’s account of the study.

The study offers detailed evidence about how homework and teacher explanations worked in that district over time, not a national count of teachers who give up on struggling students. The authors caution that the district’s demographics and local practices limit how broadly the findings can be generalized. The sources provide no population-level estimate of how common teacher pessimism is.

Why home support can change what homework means

The paper uses pseudonyms to show how family help can differ. Gina, a fifth grader, had a mother who described re-explaining math in ways that made sense to her daughter. Jesse, a classmate, had a mother who described struggling to help with fifth-grade math because of her own difficult school experience. This contrast illustrates different access to help; it is not a representative comparison of families or evidence that one parent cared more.

When an assignment assumes that a student can get explanations or guidance at home, completion may depend on more than the child’s effort. A student with someone able to interpret the work has an advantage over a student whose family lacks the time, confidence, or subject knowledge to do so. The authors’ concern is that treating those unequal conditions as differences in responsibility can make a resource gap look like a personal failing.

What “there’s only so far I can take them” reveals

The title phrase comes from a fourth-grade teacher the primary study identifies as Mr. Cherlin. Describing a “lower-income pocket” with less support at home, he said: “If they don’t have the support at home, there’s only so far I can take them. If they’re not gonna go home and do their homework, there’s just not much I can do.”

The comment captures the limit the teacher perceived: if homework depended on support beyond school, he felt there was only so much he could do. The authors place that view alongside evidence that teachers recognized unequal home support and that some students struggled with work they could not complete independently. Their analysis focuses on the gap between recognizing unequal circumstances and continuing practices that can make homework completion consequential.

  • What does the grading policy reward? Examine whether grades or rewards reflect learning, completion, or access to help outside school.
  • What happens when work is missing? Review whether the response helps identify a learning or access barrier, or primarily reprimands and penalizes the student.

These are questions raised by the study’s account of homework conditions, not a tested checklist or proof that any single policy will improve outcomes.
