Some smartphones are harder to repair because their parts are difficult to reach, held in place with challenging adhesives, or dependent on replacement parts, instructions, and software access that may not be available. Repairability is a product of both a phone’s physical design and the support system around it—not simply whether a component can technically be replaced.
What makes one smartphone harder to repair than another?
How the phone is assembled
Repair starts with access. A battery, screen, or back panel secured with adhesive can require heat, careful prying, replacement adhesive, and a procedure that risks damaging the part being removed. If a commonly replaced component sits beneath a fragile screen or several other parts, reaching it adds work and breakage risk.

Accessible fasteners and connectors, direct access to frequently failing parts, and components that can be removed independently generally support easier repair. Tightly glued construction, soldered or integrated parts, and a layout that requires extensive disassembly can make the same job harder. These are tendencies, not absolutes: adhesive type, release method, repair instructions, and replacement seals all affect the actual procedure. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre explains these design factors in its overview of why repairability matters.
Whether parts, tools, and instructions are available
A repairable design is of limited practical use if the correct replacement part or reliable instructions cannot be obtained. Repairs may also call for specific screw bits, opening tools, fresh adhesive, or other supplies; a generic toolkit cannot overcome missing parts or a difficult opening procedure. Check the exact model and repair guide before buying parts or attempting a repair. iFixit’s smartphone repairability scorecards consider factors including parts and instructions, and show that support differs by model.

Whether replacement parts need software support
Some component replacements require calibration or firmware access as well as physical installation. That makes software access a separate part of repairability: a component may be removable, but completing the repair can still depend on tools or authorization. For covered products placed on the EU market, the Commission describes access for professional repairers to relevant replacement-related software or firmware as part of the rules.
How design goals interact
Thinness, rigidity, battery capacity, sealing against dust or water, and a compact internal layout can interact with repair access. But water resistance does not automatically mean a phone is difficult to repair, just as easy opening does not guarantee durability. The specific construction and repair procedure matter more than a blanket rule about a feature.

Repairability is not the same as durability or repair cost
A phone can resist drops and water yet be difficult to open. Another may be straightforward to open but have a fragile screen or limited software support. And a favorable repairability score does not establish that a replacement part is affordable, locally available, or worth fitting. Before deciding whether to repair a phone, check the exact model, local parts supply, repair quote, warranty terms, and how the repair will affect your data.

For covered smartphones and slate tablets placed on the EU market, energy-labelling requirements apply from 20 June 2025. The label gives a repairability class from A, the most repairable, to E, the least repairable. The European Commission says the model’s six repairability-index parameters can be examined through its EPREL details page. Treat the class as a screening aid, not a repair quote or a promise that a particular part is in stock. See the Commission’s smartphones and tablets product information for the scope and details.

The Commission’s ecodesign requirements apply from the same date to covered smartphones, feature phones, cordless phones, and slate tablets placed on the EU market. The page lists exclusions, including roll-up flexible-display devices and high-security communication smartphones, so the framework should not be read as applying to every device or every market. For products within scope, the requirements address disassembly and repair, spare-parts access, operating-system upgrades, battery durability, and other product characteristics.
- Battery durability: The Commission specifies at least 800 charge-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity.
- Operating-system upgrades: The Commission specifies at least five years of upgrades after the last unit of a model is placed on the market.
- Spare parts: The Commission describes critical spare parts being available within five to ten working days and for seven years after the model’s sales end on the EU market. The exact obligations and access conditions vary by part and by whether the requester is a professional repairer or an end user.
The Commission estimates that the rules could increase the average lifetime of a mid-range smartphone from 3.0 to 4.1 years for the same stock; this is a scenario estimate, not a measured result for every phone or market. It also estimates almost 14 terawatt-hours of primary energy saved each year by 2030 for phones and tablets. These are policy estimates, not a ranking of individual devices.

How to compare two phones’ repairability
Use model-specific information rather than relying on a brand reputation or one score. If comparing an EU label with an independent teardown score, remember that they use different methods and scales.

What model-specific assessments can—and cannot—show
iFixit describes its smartphone scores as teardown-based ratings from zero, meaning unrepairable, to ten, meaning easiest to repair. It also says its rubric is updated, so a device might not receive the same score if assessed again. Compare models within that system and check the relevant scorecard version; do not treat it as interchangeable with the EU A–E label.

Examples on iFixit’s live score page illustrate why the details matter. Its 2025 Fairphone 6 assessment describes adhesive-free screen and battery repairs, modularity, and parts and instructions available from the manufacturer. The page’s Google Pixel 10 entry describes prioritized screen access and more accessible battery and charging-port repairs, while noting adhesive on many components. Its Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge entry credits a more easily removed battery and modular charging port but flags tightly glued screen and rear-cover construction. These are descriptions of the assessments on the linked page, not universal rankings or claims about every model from those manufacturers. Designs can change between model years and within a product family.
