A PC game can run perfectly on a desktop and still be frustrating—or unusable—on a handheld. The problem may be missing controller support, tiny interface text, a mouse-only launcher, an incompatible anti-cheat component, or a Windows game running through SteamOS’s Proton compatibility layer. “It launches” is only one part of compatibility.
Use the troubleshooting sequence in this guide to identify the actual failure, apply the device maker’s supported fixes, and decide when the limitation belongs to the game, its middleware, the operating system, or the hardware.

Why won’t this PC game work on my handheld?
Handheld compatibility has several independent parts. Valve’s Steam Deck review checks physical controls, controller icons, the default display resolution, text legibility, launcher usability, and whether the game and its middleware work through Proton. A title can therefore receive a status that reflects a usable experience only with adjustments, rather than a simple yes-or-no answer.
The first step is to name the symptom precisely. “Doesn’t work” could mean that the game never starts, starts without recognizing the controls, shows unreadable text, traps you in a mouse-driven launcher, crashes after loading, or runs at an unacceptable frame rate. Each symptom points to a different fix.

Launch failure
A game may fail before its main menu because of Proton compatibility, a launcher, DRM, a driver, or middleware such as anti-cheat. Changing graphics settings cannot repair a component that never initializes.
Input failure
Some PC games assume a keyboard and mouse. A handheld may have no complete controller layout, may expose incorrect button icons, or may require a community-created layout. The game can be technically running while the player cannot navigate it.
Display and text failure
A desktop interface may be designed for a large monitor. Menus, subtitles, or tooltips can become difficult to read on a small screen, especially when the game does not handle the handheld’s native resolution or scaling well.
Launcher and text-entry failure
A separate launcher can require pointer movement, clicking, or text entry before the game starts. A controller-friendly game does not guarantee a controller-friendly launcher.
Performance or battery failure
Frame-rate targets, refresh rate, resolution, graphics workload, and power use interact differently on every handheld. There is no single graphics preset that suits every model and game.
What do Steam Deck compatibility badges actually mean?
On Steam Deck, inspect the current badge and its compatibility details on the game’s store or library entry. Valve describes the labels as a continuing review rather than a permanent certification:
| Badge | Practical meaning | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Works well out of the box | Controls, display, text, and required software meet Valve’s criteria without substantial manual work. |
| Playable | Works with possible adjustments | You may need a community control configuration, touchscreen input, an on-screen keyboard, or another manual workaround. |
| Unsupported | Currently not functional on Deck | The present combination of game, operating system, Proton, and middleware does not provide a working experience. |
| Unknown | Not yet checked by Valve | The absence of a badge is not proof that the game fails; it means official review has not established a status. |
Statuses can change as the game, Proton, drivers, or SteamOS change. Check the live game entry immediately before troubleshooting rather than relying on an old screenshot or forum post.

How does Proton affect a Windows game on SteamOS?
SteamOS uses Proton as a compatibility layer for many Windows games. Proton translates the Windows game’s calls so they can run in the Linux-based SteamOS environment, but it is not a guarantee that every part of the game works.
Valve’s compatibility guidance states: “If running through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton. This includes anti-cheat support.” That requirement matters because the game may depend on a launcher, DRM service, video codec, online service, or anti-cheat driver in addition to its executable.
Why anti-cheat is a special case
Do not assume that every anti-cheat game is blocked, and do not assume that every anti-cheat game works. Support depends on the game’s implementation and configuration. A title can launch in offline mode yet fail when an online session initializes its anti-cheat component.
Why changing Proton may not solve everything
Selecting another compatibility tool can help when a particular Proton build handles a game better, but it cannot add support for middleware that is unavailable or disabled. Treat a Proton change as a controlled test, not a universal cure.

Control problems usually come from a missing or incomplete mapping, a launcher that expects a pointer, or a game that switches between controller and keyboard modes. Steam Deck’s review criteria include physical controls, controller icons, and on-screen keyboard behavior, which is why a game can be marked Playable even when it needs a specific setup.
Check the per-game control configuration
- Open the game in your Steam library.
- Open the per-game controller or control-layout settings.
- Try the official layout first, then inspect available community layouts if the game has no usable default.
- Launch the game and test movement, camera control, menu navigation, confirmation, cancellation, and any required keyboard shortcuts.
- Record which action fails. “The left stick does nothing” requires a different change from “the launcher needs a pointer.”
A community layout may restore basic playability, but it can also omit rarely used commands or map a keyboard shortcut awkwardly. Check the full control scheme before starting a long session.
Use touch or an on-screen keyboard when the game expects a mouse
For a launcher, login field, or one-time setup screen, the touchscreen may be the simplest supported pointer. Valve’s examples of Playable games include cases that require touchscreen navigation. On Windows handhelds, ASUS documents touchscreen use and a gamepad-layout on-screen keyboard for the ROG Ally; the exact shortcut and overlay depend on the model and its software.

Valve’s Deck guidance says: “The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.” Those figures describe Steam Deck’s criteria; they are not a universal native-resolution requirement for every handheld.
Improve legibility without chasing a magic preset
- Use the game’s supported resolution and test whether interface scaling or subtitle size can be increased.
- Prefer a stable frame-rate target over an unnecessarily high refresh rate when readability and battery life are the priority.
- Check whether the game has a UI-scale, high-contrast, subtitle, or HUD-size option.
- For games with fixed-size text, use the handheld’s display scaling or magnification features only if they do not interfere with controls.
If text remains unreadable because the game’s interface is hard-coded for a larger display, settings may not fully solve the problem. That is a usability limitation, not evidence that the handheld lacks the raw power to run the game.
Work around a mouse-first launcher
- Start the game and identify whether the launcher is separate from the game executable.
- Try touchscreen input or the device’s supported pointer mode.
- Use the on-screen keyboard for account names, launch options, or other required fields.
- After the game reaches its main menu, test whether the in-game controls work independently of the launcher.
If the launcher is the only failure, look for a direct game launch option documented by the game developer. Do not delete launcher files or bypass DRM components without official instructions; doing so can break updates or online features.
How do I fix a game that won’t launch on Steam Deck?
Use a narrow sequence and change one variable at a time. That makes it possible to tell whether an update, restart, compatibility tool, or control change actually helped.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the exact failure. Note whether the game does nothing, opens and closes, stops at a launcher, shows an error, or reaches the menu and then crashes.
- Check the current compatibility entry. Read the game’s present Steam Deck badge and any linked details. A status may have changed since you installed the game.
- Install updates and restart. Apply available SteamOS and game updates, then restart the handheld before trying additional changes.
- Test a compatibility tool only when appropriate. Open the game’s Properties > Compatibility controls and select a listed compatibility tool as a targeted test, following Valve’s support guidance. Return to the default if the test makes the behavior worse.
- Separate game failure from middleware failure. If the error names a launcher, DRM, or anti-cheat component, changing resolution or controller layouts is unlikely to help.
- Check current game-specific support information. For persistent Proton or middleware failures, use the game developer’s current support or compatibility information rather than an old tweak list.
Do not repeatedly swap compatibility tools without recording results. Different tools can change shader caches, configuration files, or save behavior, making the original symptom harder to diagnose.
What should I do about low frame rates and battery drain?
Performance tuning is device-specific. Start with a clear target—such as a stable frame rate that suits the game—then adjust resolution, graphics workload, and power settings in small steps.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Use refresh rate correctly
Valve’s basic Deck guidance warns that selecting a refresh rate above the device model’s limit cannot improve performance and can consume battery faster. Set a refresh rate the panel can actually use, then match the game’s frame-rate target to that choice.
Change one performance variable at a time
- Lower resolution or use the game’s supported scaling mode if the GPU workload is the bottleneck.
- Reduce expensive effects such as shadows or reflections before lowering interface quality that affects readability.
- Use a frame-rate cap when the game is producing unnecessary frames and draining the battery.
- Recheck temperatures, fan behavior, and battery drain after each change rather than assuming a preset is optimal.
A low frame rate caused by a game’s shader compilation, a launcher process, or an unsupported compatibility path will not necessarily improve when every graphics option is set to Low.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSteamOS or a Windows handheld: which handles a troublesome game better?
There is no universal winner. Compare the actual games and storefronts you use, not a general reputation for compatibility.
| Decision factor | SteamOS handheld such as Steam Deck | Windows handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system path | Many Windows games run through Proton, so the game and its middleware must support that path. | Windows games run in their native operating-system environment, but drivers, overlays, and manufacturer software still matter. |
| Storefronts and launchers | Steam integration is central; non-Steam launchers may require extra setup and pointer input. | Major PC launchers are available, but each launcher can have its own controller and text-entry behavior. |
| Anti-cheat and middleware | Support varies by game configuration through Proton. | Native Windows support may avoid Proton-specific limitations, but the game can still reject a handheld or require a particular driver. |
| Controls | Steam’s per-game layouts and touchscreen can address some gaps; a Playable title may still require manual mapping. | Manufacturer control software and an on-screen keyboard can help, but the game may default to keyboard-and-mouse prompts. |
| Text and display | Valve evaluates Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 defaults and text legibility. | Text scaling and resolution behavior depend on Windows, the game, and the specific device panel. |
| Support path | Use Valve and game-specific compatibility information. | For driver or hardware behavior, consult the handheld manufacturer; Valve advises owners of third-party handhelds to do so. |
Choosing a Windows handheld can remove a Proton-specific obstacle, but it does not guarantee a good handheld interface. Choosing SteamOS can provide a cohesive Steam control workflow, but it does not make unsupported middleware compatible.
A symptom-based troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely area to check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No launch or immediate close | Proton, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat, or update state | Check the current badge, update, restart, and test a compatibility tool through Properties > Compatibility. |
| Launcher opens but cannot be navigated | Mouse-first interface or missing text-entry path | Use touchscreen or the device’s supported pointer and on-screen keyboard workflow. |
| Game starts but buttons do nothing | Missing or incorrect control layout | Inspect the per-game layout and test an official or community configuration. |
| Text is too small | Resolution, UI scaling, or fixed-size interface design | Use supported resolution and in-game UI or subtitle scaling; do not assume more GPU power will enlarge text. |
| Online mode fails while offline mode works | Anti-cheat or online middleware | Check the game’s current support information; a graphics change is unlikely to repair middleware. |
| Battery drains unusually fast | Refresh rate, frame-rate target, workload, or background processes | Use a supported refresh rate and cap unnecessary frames, then tune graphics one setting at a time. |
When should you stop tweaking and escalate?
Escalate when the evidence points outside normal settings. A repeatable Proton or middleware error belongs with current game or developer compatibility information. A driver, firmware, display, thermal, or hardware-control problem belongs with the handheld manufacturer. Valve specifically advises owners of third-party handhelds to consult their manufacturer for detailed device support.
Before contacting support, capture the device model, operating system and version, storefront, game version, compatibility tool, exact symptom, and the steps that reproduce it. This prevents support from treating a launch failure as a controller problem or a display issue as a performance issue.

How to prevent the next compatibility surprise
- Check the live compatibility status before buying or installing a game for handheld use.
- Read whether the title requires touchscreen input, a community layout, a launcher workaround, or a specific compatibility tool.
- Keep SteamOS, Windows, device firmware, drivers, and the game current.
- Test the first launch, controls, text, and online mode during a refund-eligible period where applicable to your storefront’s policy.
- Save a note of any working control layout or compatibility setting so an update does not force you to rediscover it.
The practical standard is not merely “will the executable run?” A good handheld experience also needs usable controls, readable text, a navigable launcher, supported middleware, and performance that fits the device’s battery and display.
