Why Some Kindle Books Won’t Open on Kobo—and What You Can Do

A Kindle book can fail on a Kobo for two separate reasons: the file format may not be supported, or the copy may be protected by Kindle-specific digital rights management (DRM). Kobo can read compatible EPUB and PDF files, but that support does not authorize a Kindle-protected book. Most DRM-protected Kindle purchases must stay in Kindle apps or devices. The important current exception is an eligible, purchased DRM-free title: from January 20, 2026, Amazon says verified buyers may be offered EPUB or PDF downloads, subject to the publisher’s settings. Borrowed books are excluded.

Format and DRM are different compatibility checks

An ebook’s extension describes its container and how reading software parses the content. DRM is a separate permission layer that determines which account, application or device may open that particular copy. A file can therefore look like a familiar EPUB or PDF and still be unusable on a Kobo if its protection system is not authorized there.

Amazon’s Kindle publishing guidance states that applying DRM limits reader access to Kindle devices and apps only. Copying a file with a cable, changing its filename, or changing an extension does not change that license. It can also leave a file unreadable because the contents still use the original encryption.

Kobo’s supported-format list includes EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI, with exceptions for EPUB features on some older Kobo Original and Kobo Wi-Fi readers. Kobo also documents support for Adobe DRM and Social DRM. Kindle DRM is not listed as a supported Kobo protection system, so a Kindle Store file can fail even when its underlying format appears familiar.

What kinds of Kindle books can move to a Kobo?

DRM-protected Kindle purchases

These normally remain inside the Kindle ecosystem. The purchase gives you reading access under Amazon’s licensing rules, not an unrestricted file that can be opened on any reader. If Manage Your Content and Devices does not offer a real EPUB or PDF download for the title, a direct Kobo transfer is not an authorized route.

Eligible DRM-free purchases

Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing policy changed on January 20, 2026. For an eligible book marked DRM-free by its publisher or author, a verified purchaser may see options to download EPUB and PDF files in Manage Your Content and Devices. The availability is title-specific: the publisher must enable the setting, and some books published before December 9, 2025 may require the publisher to confirm the DRM-free download choice before it appears.

That policy applies to a completed purchase, not to every item visible in your Kindle library. Books borrowed through Kindle Unlimited or another lending service are excluded, even when the title itself is DRM-free. A loan ends under the service’s rules and is not converted into a transferable ownership file.

Kindle books with no export option

If the title page in your Amazon account offers only Kindle delivery or app/device reading, use a Kindle app or Kindle device, or ask the publisher whether an authorized DRM-free edition is available. Do not treat the absence of an EPUB/PDF option as a file-transfer problem that can be solved by renaming or copying hidden files.

Check a title before trying to transfer it

Use the individual book record rather than assuming that every book from the same author or series has identical rights. Follow this sequence:

  1. Sign in to Amazon and open Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Find the exact book and open its available actions or download choices.
  3. Look for an explicit option to download as EPUB or PDF. A Kindle-format download, an app-delivery command, or a device-sync option is not the same thing.
  4. Confirm that the item is a purchase made by the account you are using. Check that it is not labeled Kindle Unlimited, a library loan, a promotional loan, or another borrowed copy.
  5. If no EPUB/PDF option appears, check whether the title is DRM-free and whether the publisher has enabled downloads. For older titles, the publisher may need to confirm the setting.
  6. Download the offered file itself. Do not rename a Kindle-format file to “.epub” or “.pdf”; an extension change does not convert the contents or remove protection.

Because Amazon’s policy is title-specific and can change as publishers update settings, the account page is the decisive check for a particular book.

Transfer a non-protected EPUB or PDF by USB

Kobo’s simple computer-import method is intended for non-protected files. Kobo describes the process as adding non-protected PDF and EPUB files to the eReader’s storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a computer to download the actual DRM-free EPUB or PDF supplied for your purchase.
  2. Connect the Kobo eReader to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
  3. When the reader prompts you, tap Connect. The device should appear as the KOBOeReader drive.
  4. Copy the EPUB or PDF into the KOBOeReader drive. Keep the original extension and do not place a loan license file there unless the instructions for that source specifically require it.
  5. Safely eject the KOBOeReader drive from the computer.
  6. Disconnect the cable and wait while the Kobo imports and indexes the book. It should then appear in your library.

This route does not work for DRM-protected files or for third-party files whose protection is not supported by Kobo. A successful copy operation only proves that the computer wrote bytes to the drive; it does not prove that the reader can decrypt or authorize the book.

If the Kobo is not detected

  • Unlock the reader and look for the USB prompt; choose Connect instead of charging-only behavior.
  • Try a different data cable and a different computer port.
  • If a USB-C hub fails to detect the reader, connect it directly to the computer when possible.
  • When the computer has only USB-A ports, try a compatible USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. This addresses physical connection and detection, not DRM or format incompatibility.
  • Eject the KOBOeReader drive cleanly before unplugging it. Removing the cable while files are being written can cause an incomplete import or storage errors.

If the book copies but does not appear

Verify that the file is a genuine EPUB or PDF and that it opens on the computer without a separate authorization step. Reconnect, eject cleanly and allow the reader time to re-index. If the file requests Kindle authorization or is otherwise protected, stop troubleshooting the cable: the protection, not the transfer, is the blocker.

When Adobe Digital Editions is the right workflow

Adobe DRM is a different ecosystem from Kindle DRM. Kobo documents Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) for books supplied with an Adobe authorization file, commonly an .acsm file. The ACSM is a license ticket that ADE opens to obtain the encrypted ebook; it is not the book itself.

  1. Install or open Adobe Digital Editions on the computer.
  2. Authorize ADE with the ByteBooks ID required by Kobo’s current setup instructions. If you are moving from an Adobe ID, Kobo says to use the same email address when transitioning.
  3. Authorize the Kobo eReader in ADE with the same account.
  4. Open the .acsm file in ADE. ADE downloads the corresponding Adobe-DRM EPUB or PDF.
  5. In ADE, drag the authorized book to the Kobo device listed in the library.
  6. Eject the reader from ADE or the operating system before disconnecting it, then open the title on Kobo.

ADE works only when the source has issued an Adobe-authorized book and the Kobo is authorized for that Adobe account. It does not convert a Kindle-protected book and does not remove Kindle DRM. If Amazon supplied a Kindle-specific file rather than an ACSM/Adobe book, ADE is not the remedy.

Why common attempted fixes fail

Renaming .mobi, .azw or another Kindle file

Renaming changes only the label shown to the operating system. It does not reflow the content into EPUB, create a valid PDF, or alter DRM. Kobo may reject the file, show an import error, or list it without being able to open it.

Copying a protected file into the Kobo drive

The KOBOeReader drive is storage, not a license server. Kobo’s USB instructions specifically concern non-protected EPUB and PDF files. A protected Kindle file remains encrypted after the copy.

Using ADE for every ebook problem

ADE is appropriate for Adobe DRM, usually signaled by an ACSM license and an authorized Adobe source. It cannot authorize a Kindle Store book because the two systems use different accounts and protection rules.

Assuming every EPUB is interchangeable

EPUB is a container standard, not a guarantee that every edition will work on every reader. Older Kobo Original and Kobo Wi-Fi models have documented EPUB3 exceptions, and an EPUB may also carry DRM. Confirm both the model’s format support and the file’s protection status.

Confusing a Kobo Store export with a Kindle export

Kobo says many Kobo Store purchases can be downloaded from My Books for use on another manufacturer’s device. DRM-free Kobo files can be copied directly, while protected EPUB/PDF exports use ADE. That direction—from Kobo Store to another reader—is separate from moving Kindle Store books to Kobo and does not create a Kindle export option.

A practical decision tree

  • Amazon offers EPUB or PDF for a purchased title: download that file and use Kobo’s non-protected USB import. If the file is protected, follow the source’s supported authorization method instead of forcing a direct copy.
  • The item is borrowed: keep reading it through the Kindle or lending service. A loan is not an exportable purchase.
  • The title is purchased but no EPUB/PDF option appears: treat it as unavailable for an authorized Kobo transfer. Use Kindle or ask the publisher about a DRM-free edition.
  • The source gives you an ACSM file: use ADE with the ByteBooks authorization steps and an authorized Kobo.
  • The Kobo is not detected: solve the cable, port, hub or USB prompt first. A connection fix cannot make Kindle DRM readable.
  • The file is visible but will not open: check its actual format and protection. Do not keep repeating transfers or rename the extension.

What to verify before contacting support

Have the exact title, purchase or loan status, the file extension actually downloaded, the Kobo model, and the point of failure ready. Note whether Amazon offered EPUB/PDF, whether Kobo detected the device, whether the file imported, and whether an authorization prompt appeared. This separates an account-entitlement question from a USB connection fault and from a model-specific format limitation.

If Amazon’s account page does not provide an authorized export, the legitimate choices are to read the book in a Kindle app or device or to request a DRM-free edition from the publisher. Kobo’s supported-format list cannot override the license attached to a Kindle-protected copy.
