The rescue premise inspires speculation, not a plot reveal

No. The coverage presents “airhead” as a fan headcanon, not canon or a developer-confirmed characterization. AUTOMATON suggests that Rex’s sparse characterization as a largely silent protagonist leaves room for players to imagine his personality; that is the reporter’s explanation for the joke’s appeal, not a statement of developer intent. There is no cited statistic measuring how many players hold this interpretation. A separate 648 News report said 85.3% of 470 Japanese-language Steam reviews were positive in a sample collected from September 28 to October 2, 2026. What the first-person perspective was designed to do
In a Japanese PlayStation Blog interview, director Kazutoki Kono said the first-person perspective was chosen to help players feel present alongside their comrades on the ground and in fighter jets in the sky. The interview does not say that QTEs were intended to make Rex seem clumsy, or that the developers designed him as an airhead. Its setting context is also distinct from the fan joke: the story is self-contained in the shared Strangereal world, takes place in Usea ten years after the previous game, and is set in 2029. What the joke says—and what it does not
The reported headcanon is best understood as playful contrast, not a consensus verdict on Rex: a pilot who can be formidable in combat may look conspicuously awkward when a ground scene turns on a delayed button press or a comic mishap. It does not establish that Rex is incompetent, that every Japanese player sees him this way, or that the developers intended the interpretation.
