The story described social-media users reacting negatively to ads emphasizing flirting, role-play and “NSFW pics,” particularly because the marketing appeared to connect those features with people portrayed as lonely. The report is historical: it does not establish that Replika currently runs the same ads, offers the same features or charges the same price.
What the January 2023 story reported
Futurism’s Noor Al-Sibai described Replika as an AI companion app whose basic experience was oriented toward a friend-like relationship. The article said paid features let users create avatar partners and marry them, while advertisements promoted sexualized interactions. Its account, published January 10, 2023, is the source for those descriptions: read the original Futurism report.

The article’s headline and language drove the “AI that sexts with lonely people” phrasing that circulated in search and social discussion. That wording should not be read as proof that every user was lonely, that ads were delivered to a measured population of lonely people, or that sexual conversations were universal.

Why the ads drew alarm
Sexual marketing attached to an emotional-need narrative
Critics objected to advertising that appeared to combine intimate, sexual services with imagery or language about loneliness. The concern was less about an abstract chatbot capability than about the way a commercial product seemed to position sexualized companionship as an answer to social isolation. The available reporting records reactions and examples, but no named study measured how many people saw the ads, how often they appeared or how many users identified as lonely.

A sharp shift from “friend” to “partner”
Replika’s friend-like entry point made the premium upsell notable. A person seeking casual conversation could encounter marketing for marriage, flirting and sexual role-play instead of a clearly separate adult product. That transition fueled criticism about consent, expectations and whether users understood which interactions required payment.

Platform rules complicated the presentation
Futurism reported that Apple’s App Store terms limited fully nude illustrations, while text-based role-play could still occur. This was the article’s account of the platform and app behavior in January 2023; it is not confirmation of Apple’s current rules or Replika’s current implementation.

What the wider incident record adds
OECD.AI’s incident monitor lists the Futurism article alongside contemporaneous reports about Replika, including accounts involving sexual advances or harassment complaints: OECD.AI incident entry. The page provides timing and context for the news cycle. It does not independently verify every anecdote in the Futurism story or show that all users had the same experience.
What cannot be concluded from this story
- There is no established population statistic for user loneliness, ad exposure or the prevalence of sexual role-play.
- The reporting does not prove that Replika deliberately targeted lonely people as a defined advertising demographic.
- The $70 annual figure is historical, not evidence of the current subscription price.
- The January 2023 descriptions do not establish what current Replika versions, policies or advertisements contain.
- User posts and editorial descriptions are not statements from a regulator, court, standards body or named expert.
How to read the headline today
The headline captures a 2023 controversy over marketing and product boundaries, not a timeless description of Replika. A careful reading separates three claims: social users expressed alarm; Futurism described ads for sexualized premium companion features; and the evidence available for that report did not measure loneliness or establish present-day practices. Any assessment of the service now would require current, primary evidence about its features, pricing, advertising and platform policies.
