Why So Many Steam Games Have Weirdly Similar—and Forgettable—Names

Steam game titles can feel like variations on a few familiar formulas because developers draw inspiration from the same games while trying to solve the same storefront problem: explain a game quickly and make it stand out. That can push names toward recognizable patterns, even as each developer tries to be distinctive. Interviews and individual developer accounts point to these pressures, but they do not prove that any naming pattern makes a game forgettable or hurts sales.

Why familiar title formulas keep returning

Game creators look to other games for inspiration, and that can make naming conventions reinforce themselves. Hannah Flynn of Failbetter Games, who also reviews Steam store pages, described the cycle this way: “The possibility space spirals in on itself, and suddenly everything’s called Rise of the Bonelord: Origins of Dust.” It is a witty description of a creative tendency, not a measured count of developers copying titles.

When many games draw on similar genres, themes, and fantasy or science-fiction language, they can also reach for similar words and structures. A title may sound familiar because it signals a recognizable kind of game—not necessarily because its creator deliberately copied another title.

Steam gives a title a small but important job

On a crowded storefront, a game has limited space and time to catch a browsing player’s interest. Flynn says, “Steam is a very densely populated platform these days,” and points to the game name and capsule art as some of the few elements available to make an impression. A title has to contribute to the game’s presentation, but it does not work alone.

Flynn’s view is that “A good name sells the game’s vibe.” A title can convey a game’s mood or theme; a more descriptive name can also help signal what sort of experience it offers. Those aims can pull in different directions: an evocative title may be distinctive but vague, while a familiar genre cue may be clear but blend in.

What makes a name distinctive, clear, and findable?

Developer accounts suggest a practical set of checks rather than a formula. Leene, the developer of Death and Taxes, said, “Name and logo is usually one of the first things a player sees about the game and first impressions are really important.” In a Steam community post dated December 13, 2019, Leene described considering whether a name was pronounceable, searchable, distinctive, and informative.

  • Distinctiveness: Does the title sound like this game rather than a cluster of similar releases?
  • Clarity: Does it suggest the game’s theme, activity, or tone without requiring a long explanation?
  • Pronunciation and spelling: Can someone say the name aloud and type it into a search box after hearing it?
  • Searchability: Do searches for the phrase lead to the game, or are unrelated products and existing games more prominent?

These qualities can conflict. A coined word might be easier to distinguish from unrelated titles but harder for a player to spell. An ordinary phrase may be easy to remember but difficult to find among other uses.

Why name collisions matter

Leene recalled that early searches for Death and Taxes were dominated by a Magic: The Gathering card pack with the same phrase. In a separate account, Lunarch Studios’ Elyot Grant described dropping “Breach” after discovering an existing game with that name while working on what became Prismata. Both are individual examples, not evidence of how often collisions happen across Steam, but they show why checking existing uses matters.

A quick search is not a guarantee that a name is legally available or free of every conflict. It can, however, reveal obvious competition in game storefronts and general search results before a title becomes closely associated with a new release.

Do subtitles solve the problem?

A subtitle can add useful detail when the main title is evocative or ambiguous. But extra wording can also make a game harder to recall if players are unsure which part of the title to search for. The useful question is whether the subtitle tells a potential player something meaningful—not whether a longer title sounds more substantial.

One historical analysis by Envato Tuts+ found that 15.14% of its sample had multi-part titles under the study’s punctuation-based definition. The share among its top 10% of titles by sales was reported as 19.17%. The sample year is unclear in the accessible page text, so these figures should not be read as a current Steam trend or proof that subtitles help sales.

What title data can—and cannot—show

The same Envato Tuts+ analysis examined 5,820 standalone Steam releases, excluding free-to-play games and DLC. It reported that fewer than two dozen title structures accounted for more than 90% of the sample, including patterns such as “{noun} of {noun}” and “{noun}: {adjective} {noun}.” That finding offers a historical explanation for why titles can sound formulaic, but it is not a current count of Steam releases: the sample year is not established in the accessible text.

The analysis also reported an average title length of 17.15 characters and 2.8 words across its full sample. It classified 27.93% of sampled titles as containing a “unique word,” defined by the authors as a word absent from dictionary definitions in the ten most popular Steam-player languages. These are measurements under that study’s sample and definitions, not universal rules for what makes a title memorable. Its comparison of title features with top-selling games does not establish that a particular length or structure causes stronger sales.

Does a game’s name determine whether people notice it?

Not by itself. GameDiscoverCo founder Simon Carless argues that naming is less important than “video footage, someone else playing it, or a recommendation.” Trailer expert Derek Lieu, by contrast, says a name can be “the difference between someone remembering your game and having it disappear into the ether.” These perspectives are compatible: a name can help a game stick in someone’s mind, while footage, word of mouth, and other parts of its presentation may matter more in a particular discovery or purchase decision.

The available accounts are professional opinions and developer anecdotes, not controlled tests of player recall or sales. They support treating the title as one part of a game’s identity—not as a reliable predictor of commercial success.

A practical naming process for an indie game

  1. Start with the game itself. List words or phrases drawn from its theme, activity, setting, characters, or mood instead of beginning by imitating another game’s title structure.
  2. Compare several candidates. Ask whether each is distinctive, clear enough for its intended audience, and easy to pronounce and spell.
  3. Check for existing uses. Search game storefronts and the wider web for the exact phrase and close variations; note whether an existing game, product, or property dominates results.
  4. Test any subtitle for usefulness. Keep one if it clarifies the game in a meaningful way; do not add it simply to make the name longer.
  5. Consider the whole store presentation. The title should work alongside the capsule art and footage, not carry the entire burden of explaining or selling the game.

These steps synthesize advice from developers and industry observers; they are not a tested guarantee of discoverability, recall, or sales.
