Identify which stage failed, then apply the matching Windows check below. The instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; names and available settings vary by version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft.
Start with the symptom
Try one capture and note exactly what happens immediately afterward. A clipboard result, a Snipping Tool editor image and a saved file are separate outcomes; success at one stage does not guarantee success at the next.
- Nothing opens: investigate the shortcut, Print Screen assignment and keyboard layout.
- The overlay opens, but no image appears: repeat the capture and confirm the mode and selection.
- The image appears, but paste fails: check the clipboard rather than the saved-file location.
- You can paste it, but cannot find a file: check automatic saving, the Screenshots folder and Save as.
- A setting or save operation is blocked: review Windows library permissions as a conditional check.
Why won’t Windows+Shift+S take a screenshot?
Windows logo key + Shift + S is Microsoft’s shortcut for opening the image-snipping overlay. It starts a capture workflow; it does not by itself promise that a file has been written to disk. If nothing appears, press the three keys together again, release them, and watch for the dimmed screen and capture toolbar.
Check the Print Screen assignment in Windows 11
Windows 11 can assign the Print Screen key to open screen snipping. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and inspect Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turn it on if you want PrtScn to launch the overlay, or turn it off if that key is interfering with your preferred workflow. A shortcut behaving differently from another computer may reflect this setting rather than a broken Snipping Tool.

Check the keyboard itself
On laptops, Fn layers and regional layouts can change what a key combination sends. Try the on-screen keyboard or another documented route below. If Windows+Shift+S works with an external keyboard but not the built-in one, the evidence points to keyboard behavior that needs device-specific support, not a universal Snipping Tool diagnosis.
The overlay opens but no image appears
When the toolbar appears, choose a mode deliberately: rectangular, window, full-screen or freeform. Select the area when the mode requires it. The captured image should be copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can edit and save it. Microsoft’s current guide describes these modes and the editor workflow in its Snipping Tool instructions.
Capture a menu that closes when you click away
For menus that disappear as soon as focus changes, use Microsoft’s documented sequence:
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Open the menu you need to capture.
- Press Ctrl + PrtSc while the menu is open.
- Choose the snipping mode, then select the capture area.
This keeps the menu open while you begin the snip.
Why can’t I paste my screenshot?
Snipping Tool’s captured image is copied to the clipboard and shown in its editor. Clipboard history is a separate feature. Press Windows + V; if Windows offers Turn on, enable history first. Microsoft states that clipboard history keeps up to 25 entries, clears on restart except for pinned items, and has a 4 MB per-item limit. Those are clipboard-history limits, not a guaranteed maximum size for every Snipping Tool capture or every clipboard transfer.

Test the basic clipboard path
- Take a small rectangular snip.
- Click the Snipping Tool notification or editor preview.
- Paste into a simple app such as Paint.
- If ordinary paste works, the capture and clipboard are functional; the problem is likely the destination app or its paste handling.
- If paste fails everywhere, open Windows + V and confirm that a recent bitmap entry exists.
Clipboard synchronization and history settings can add complexity. Microsoft’s clipboard documentation explains the available controls and limits.
Where did my Snipping Tool screenshot save?
Windows + Shift + S primarily starts a selection-and-clipboard workflow. A file may also be saved automatically, depending on your Snipping Tool version and settings. Open Snipping Tool, select See More > Settings, and inspect the automatic-save behavior and default folder. Microsoft says the automatic-save location and behavior can be changed, so do not assume every PC still uses the default.
Use the full-screen file shortcut
Press Windows + PrtScn for a full-screen screenshot saved in Pictures > Screenshots. This route is different from selecting a region with Windows + Shift + S: it writes a file directly. If your keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative; hardware-specific Fn behavior can differ. Save to a known location
Open the snip in the editor and choose Save as. Pick a folder you can identify, enter a filename and select PNG, JPEG or another offered format. Then open that exact folder in File Explorer rather than searching the entire drive. If Save as is unavailable or fails, continue with the permissions check below.

Could privacy settings block saving?
Windows privacy controls can limit an app’s access to the Pictures library. Microsoft’s library-access guidance is general Windows advice, not a Snipping Tool-specific diagnosis, so treat this as a conditional check. Open Settings > Privacy & security (Windows 11) or the corresponding privacy page in Windows 10, review Pictures/library access, and allow access if it is disabled for the app or account. Choose the route that matches the result you need

Use the first method for a precise region, the second when you need an immediately saved full-screen file, and the third when the keyboard lacks a dedicated Print Screen key.
Systematic troubleshooting when the usual checks fail
Nothing happens with every shortcut
- Confirm you are pressing the Windows logo key, not Ctrl or Alt.
- Try the Start-menu Snipping Tool app directly to separate a shortcut problem from an app-launch problem.
- Test Windows + PrtScn or the Fn fallback to determine whether any screenshot path works.
- Record your Windows edition and exact keyboard model before seeking device-specific help.
The toolbar appears, but selection is not recorded
- Choose a different mode, such as rectangular instead of freeform.
- Drag from inside the intended area and release the mouse button only after the selection is visible.
- Try a full-screen mode to determine whether the issue is selection-specific.
The editor shows the image, but one app will not accept it
- Paste into Paint to verify the bitmap is valid.
- Use Save as and insert the resulting file instead of pasting.
- Check whether the destination app accepts bitmap images or blocks clipboard input.
The file exists but is not where expected
- Check Snipping Tool’s See More > Settings for the current automatic-save folder.
- Look in Pictures > Screenshots for files created by Windows + PrtScn.
- Use Save as to establish a known path and filename.
Every official check passes, but captures still fail
The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal cause, a particular graphics-driver bug or a guaranteed reset sequence for every installation. At this point, note the Windows version, shortcut, capture mode, whether the editor displayed an image, whether Windows + V showed a bitmap, and the folder you checked. Those observations let support distinguish triggering, selection, clipboard and file-system failures instead of repeating unrelated fixes.
