Comparing those versions can help narrow down whether the change occurs while taking, viewing, or exporting the image. Snapchat does not identify one universal cause or guarantee a fix for every blurry photo.
Locate where the photo becomes blurry
If possible, compare the same image at three stages: the Snapchat camera preview, the sent Snap as another person sees it, and the copy in your phone’s Camera Roll. This is a practical way to isolate the stage where you notice a change; it does not establish what image processing caused it.

- Blurry in the preview: Compare Snapchat Camera with your phone’s native camera. If both look blurry, the issue may not be specific to Snapchat.
- Clear in the preview, blurry to the recipient: Check whether the result changes when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try Snapchat’s other Camera troubleshooting steps.
- Clear in Chat, blurry in Camera Roll: Make sure you are comparing the same Snap and understand whether you are viewing its Chat copy or an exported device copy.
These comparisons help identify where to investigate, but the reviewed Snapchat guidance does not document a universal photo-compression explanation or specify how image quality differs across sending, Chat, Memories, and Camera Roll.

Try Snapchat’s recommended Camera troubleshooting
For Snapchat Camera issues, Snapchat recommends checking the connection, restarting the app, checking for an update, and restarting the phone. Try one change at a time so you can tell whether it affects what you see.

- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then check whether the result changes.
- Fully close Snapchat and reopen it.
- Check your device’s app store for a Snapchat update and install one if available.
- Restart your phone and try again.

What Data Saver does—and what Snapchat does not say about it
Snapchat describes Data Saver, also called Travel Mode, as a setting to reduce mobile data use. When it is enabled, you tap to load Snaps and Stories over mobile data. The support page does not say Data Saver lowers the resolution of photos you send or causes blurry saved images.

You can test with the setting off if you are comparing how content loads, but do not treat that as a promised photo-quality fix. Snapchat lists the setting at Profile > Settings > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data > Data Saver on iOS and Android. Details are in Snapchat’s Data Saver guidance.
Know which copy you saved
Saving a Snap in Chat does not save it directly to your phone. Snapchat says a Chat save is stored on its servers; you can then export that saved Snap to Camera Roll. That means an in-Chat view and a Camera Roll copy are different save routes, not necessarily the same file in the same location. Snapchat’s explanation is in its guidance on saving Snaps in Chat.

Memories has a separate save preference with three destinations:
- Memories
- Memories & Camera Roll
- Camera Roll
Snapchat warns users to back up Memories before logging out, signing in on another device, or uninstalling the app. Check Snapchat’s save-destination instructions before changing devices or removing the app.

When the phone may be involved
Snapchat’s explicit blurry-or-shaky guidance is about video Snaps, not every still photo or every send-and-save path. Snapchat says: “If video Snaps look shaky or blurry, then this can be an issue with your device, and not the Snapchat app.” It directs iOS users to Apple and Android users to their device manufacturer. If the blur persists
- If the phone’s native camera also produces blurry images, investigate the device rather than assuming Snapchat is responsible.
- If the problem is limited to Snapchat Camera, follow Snapchat’s app, connection, and restart checks.
- For blurry or shaky video Snaps, follow Snapchat’s direction to contact Apple on iOS or your device manufacturer on Android.
The reviewed support guidance does not establish a single cause or a guaranteed fix for blurry still photos. It also does not document Snapchat’s photo-compression algorithm or specify a universal upload resolution.
