Why Snapchat Keeps Suggesting People—and How to Stop Your Account Appearing

Snapchat keeps suggesting people because its Find Friends feature—formerly called Quick Add—recommends accounts using several possible signals, including age, location, existing friends and followers, reputation, and activity on Snapchat. A suggestion does not show that the person searched for you or viewed your profile; Snapchat does not publish a reason for any individual recommendation.

Why does Snapchat keep showing you people?

Find Friends is Snapchat’s tool for helping users find friends, family, and other people they may know through their network. Snapchat says suggestions can draw on age, location, existing friends, existing followers, reputation, and behavior on Snapchat. It does not disclose how those factors are weighted or identify which one led to a particular suggestion.

Recommendations may appear in Chat, Add Friends, or Search, depending on the app experience. The feature’s name changed from Quick Add to Find Friends; it is the same general friend-finding tool, not proof that someone took a particular action toward your account.

Does a suggestion mean that person searched for or viewed you?

No. Seeing an account in Find Friends is not evidence that the person searched for your username, viewed your profile, or deliberately interacted with you. Snapchat describes several broad recommendation factors, and its support information does not provide a per-person explanation or say that a suggestion signals any one-to-one action.

Contacts can also be relevant. Snapchat says it may use uploaded contact information, and gives the example that you might see someone because you are in that person’s contacts. That possibility still does not tell you which signal produced a specific suggestion.

How to stop your account appearing in Find Friends

  1. Open your profile: Tap your profile or Bitmoji in Snapchat.
  2. Open Settings: Tap the gear icon.
  3. Find the discoverability control: Go to App & Privacy → My Privacy and Data → Who Can See → See Me in Find Friends.
  4. Turn off the setting: Disable See Me in Find Friends to prevent your account from being suggested through that feature.

Menu wording or placement can vary by app version or platform. Look for the setting named “See Me in Find Friends” if the path differs.

What to do about contacts you shared with Snapchat

Turning off Snapchat’s access to your phone contacts and deleting contact data already shared with Snapchat are separate actions. Changing the device permission can limit future access, but Snapchat warns that it may not remove information already uploaded. Stored contact information may continue to be used unless you delete it in Snapchat’s settings.

Snapchat says uploaded contact information may include names, hashed phone numbers, email addresses, and certain metadata; it says contact photos and dates themselves are not uploaded. Use the in-app controls to review and remove contact data you previously shared.

Which privacy control addresses your concern?

Control What it affects What it does not do by itself
Device contact permission Whether Snapchat can access contacts on your device going forward. It does not necessarily delete contact information already shared with Snapchat.
Delete shared contact data in Snapchat Contact data you previously uploaded, using Snapchat’s in-app removal controls. It does not prevent suggestions based on other factors or contacts another person has uploaded.
Turn off “See Me in Find Friends” Whether your account may appear in other people’s Find Friends suggestions. It does not remove contact data already shared or disable all other ways people can find you.

These controls have different scopes, so use the one that matches what you want to change. Even after you remove your uploaded contacts, you may still see suggestions for other reasons, including being in another Snapchatter’s contacts.

What Snapchat says about privacy and teen recommendations

Snapchat says accounts and friend lists are private by default, and that users can communicate with mutually accepted friends or people whose numbers they have saved in their contacts. Its Find Friends explanation also describes extra limits intended to reduce unwanted contact for teens, including requiring indications of a pre-existing connection in some cases and providing in-chat warnings. These are Snapchat’s descriptions of its safeguards; they are not a guarantee that every feature works identically for every account, region, or app version.

In a UK safety update, Snapchat lists searching by username or display name and using a Snapcode as other ways to find and connect when Find Friends is not enabled. That guidance is UK-specific and should not be treated as a universal description of every region’s app experience.
