Why Slovenia’s .si Domain Registrations Surged After Trump’s “Super Intelligence” Order

Slovenia’s .si domain saw a sharp rise in registrations as “SI” entered the news in connection with U.S. President Donald Trump’s “super intelligence” language. But the timing is more complicated than the headline suggests: registrations were already climbing before his September 22, 2026, remarks at the UN General Assembly, and the available evidence does not show that his comments alone caused the increase.

Why did .si domains suddenly attract attention?

The coincidence is linguistic as well as political. .si is Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain, while “SI” became shorthand in Trump’s remarks for “super intelligence.” Trump spoke at the UN General Assembly on September 22, 2026. On September 29, the White House said he had signed an executive order directing terminology changes within the federal executive branch.

According to the White House’s account, the order applies to federal executive-branch departments and agencies and directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to propose a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and “SI.” It does not establish a worldwide technical renaming of artificial intelligence or change how internet domains are defined. What do the registration figures show?

The figures vary by date and measurement method. Register.si’s public counter is live, while Netcraft also compares its own internet-survey observations; those estimates should not be confused with the registry’s counter totals.

Observation Figure Source and qualification
September 23, 2026 registry-counter snapshot 4,794 registrations in the previous 24 hours; 3,515 in the previous month; 198,535 total .si domains Register.si counter figures reproduced by Netcraft on September 24, 2026
October 1, 2026 registry-counter observation 13,603 registrations in the previous 24 hours Netcraft reported this was nearly three times the 24-hour figure in its September 23 snapshot
Change in total domains across eight days 21.6% increase Netcraft’s comparison of its dated observations on October 1, 2026
September registrations compared with August About 13 times as many Netcraft’s October 1, 2026 report, based on the registry counters it cited
Live Register.si counter at access on October 2, 2026 260,534 total domains; 46,066 in the previous month; 12,578 in the previous 24 hours; 92 registrars Register.si English-language counter at access time; it updates continuously, so these are not a settled daily total

The October 2 live-counter values are higher than earlier snapshots because the counter changes over time. Netcraft notes that .si is a country-code domain and is not required to publish zone files; its hourly trend comparisons therefore rely on its own internet-survey data rather than a complete public zone file. See Netcraft’s October 1 update and the Register.si counter.

Did Trump’s order cause the surge?

The reporting supports a connection in timing, not a definitive explanation for individual registrations. Netcraft’s September 24 analysis said the initial spike appeared to begin roughly three days before the UN speech, around the time of a September 19 Trump social-media poll about a possible AI rename. Netcraft said it could not tell whether registrants anticipated an announcement or registered for unrelated reasons.

Foreign Policy quoted ARNES spokesperson Klara Herman cautioning against assigning the whole increase to Trump’s comments: “We would, however, be careful about attributing the entire increase to President Trump’s comments. The upward trend was already there before the recent attention around ‘SI,’” she said. Herman added: “What we can say is that the international discussion around the term has coincided with an exceptional additional surge in interest.” Foreign Policy’s September 28 report attributes those statements to Herman.

Netcraft’s October 1 update reported that activity more than doubled after the September 29 order compared with the average daily rate between the UN speech and the order. It also observed that OpusDNS accounted for the sharp acceleration it detected. These are observations about timing and measured activity; they do not establish why any particular person or organization registered a name. Netcraft’s September 24 analysis describes its earlier findings.

How .si registration works—and what a name means legally

Register.si says customers register through a registrar, which serves as the intermediary between the registrant and the registry. Its rules say a requested name must be available and not reserved, use permitted characters, contain 2–63 characters, and not begin or end with a hyphen or have two consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions. Domains may be renewed for one to five years. The registry also describes a Registry Lock option and an Alternative Domain Dispute Resolution (ADR) procedure.

A registration does not automatically defeat another party’s trademark or other rights. Register.si says a party claiming a stronger right can initiate ADR, and that a domain name itself is not an industrial-property right. The registry’s information is available at Register.si.

Foreign Policy reported that the registry portal did not sell names directly, but recorded registrations made through roughly 90 registrars and charged registrars €10 per registration; the final retail price depended on the registrar. Its September 2026 report also said Hostinger was advertising a first-year price of $11.99 and $16.99 thereafter. Those are reported prices from that time, not universal or current offers. Are the new registrations evidence of cybersquatting or phishing?

Not by themselves. Netcraft reported that more than 50% of the .si domains it detected as registered at Dynadot between a September 19 social-media poll and Trump’s UN remarks were listed on Dynadot’s aftermarket when it checked on September 23. That is a limited sample tied to one registrar and period, not a measure of all .si registrations or registrants. An aftermarket listing indicates an offer to resell; it does not, on its own, prove trademark infringement or fraud.

Netcraft’s October 1 follow-up also reported a cluster of 87 .com domains combining known brand names with “superintelligence,” registered before the executive order and offered for resale. It said it had not yet seen an increase in malicious content such as phishing surrounding the rename. Separately, Netcraft noted a possible typo risk because “s” and “a” sit next to each other on QWERTY keyboards, making .si and .ai easy to mistype. That is a potential route to user confusion, not evidence that the new registrations are malicious.
