Why Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind Can Feel More Random Than Lights Going Out

Short answer: there is no published evidence that Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind uses a higher randomness setting than Six Ages: Lights Going Out. Ride Like the Wind can feel more random because its scenes are chosen from changing conditions, its heroquests deliberately break familiar mythic expectations, and chance outcomes are experienced inside a state that keeps shifting. The sequel uses the same broad system, but its later era, different political pressures, supernatural concerns and event pool can make surprises register differently.

That distinction matters. “More random” can mean a higher probability of an unexpected event, a wider range of possible events, less predictable consequences, or simply a story that violates what you thought the myth should do. The available developer explanations support the last three interpretations more strongly than they support any measured difference in randomization.

What the evidence actually establishes

A Sharp designer David Dunham describes the game’s event system this way: “Scenes are often picked at random, though with conditions to make sure they’re relevant or interesting.” That sentence explains both halves of the experience. Selection is not a fixed script, but it is not an unconstrained dice roll either. The game first considers what is eligible in the current situation, then chooses among scenes that fit the clan, its relationships, resources and political circumstances.

Because those circumstances change after every decision, the same scene can produce a different result on another play-through. A request may arrive when relations are strong or strained, when supplies are plentiful or scarce, or when another political problem has already consumed the clan’s attention. The scene’s appearance is variable, but so is the context in which it lands. That combination creates emergent variation: a sequence feels improvised even though each selection is being filtered by rules.

No developer statement or published dataset establishes that Ride Like the Wind has a higher random-event rate than Lights Going Out. There is no announced randomness score, comparative probability table or controlled outcome test. The most accurate conclusion is therefore about perception and design emphasis: Ride Like the Wind can feel more random, without being demonstrably more random in its underlying selection machinery.

How condition-aware scene selection creates unpredictability

Random does not mean context-free

In a purely arbitrary event generator, any event could appear at any time. Six Ages instead uses conditions to keep scenes relevant or interesting. A scene can be eligible only when a relationship, resource, political status or other part of the clan state makes it meaningful. The random element operates inside that eligible set.

This design avoids two opposite problems. If every event were scripted, repeated runs would converge on the same story. If every event were equally possible, many scenes would feel nonsensical or disconnected from the decisions that preceded them. Condition-aware selection preserves uncertainty while retaining causality. You may not know which eligible scene is next, but you can often understand why it was capable of happening.

State changes carry forward

Choices do not end when a scene closes. They alter relationships, resources and political conditions, and later scenes evaluate the updated state. A request scene is a useful example: the request itself may be selected under one set of conditions, while the response changes the relationship or resource situation that future scenes inspect. An intervening action can therefore change whether a follow-up is still sensible, or alter its consequences when it finally appears.

This indirect connection is a major source of perceived randomness. The next event does not have to be an immediate, scripted continuation. It may arrive after several other actions, provided the conditions still make it relevant. Two players can make similar choices and nevertheless reach different stories because the same event appears in different political or material circumstances.

Why replaying familiar choices can still diverge

Even if you repeat a decision, the surrounding state may not be identical. A prior relationship change, resource loss or political development can alter the eligible scene set. The game can consequently present a different event, or present a familiar event with a different practical meaning. This is not evidence of a hidden “chaos” mode; it is the expected result of random selection constrained by a living state.

Heroquests make Ride Like the Wind feel especially surprising

Mythic expectations are part of the design target

Ride Like the Wind’s heroquests are not merely branching versions of a known story. In an interview with Game Developer, Dunham explained that the design intentionally lets a mythic sequence diverge from what the player expects. He described the purpose directly: “It was just a way to show that the mythic world is really not predictable.”

That goal changes how players interpret uncertainty. In an ordinary management event, an unexpected result may feel like a bad draw. In a heroquest, an event that violates the remembered myth can feel like a statement about the world itself. The game is teaching you that your cultural knowledge is a guide, not a guarantee. Because the surprise is thematic as well as mechanical, it is more noticeable than an ordinary variation in event order.

Chance affects heroquest outcomes

The interview also describes chance rolls during heroquests and feedback from characters after failures. The roll introduces uncertainty into an attempt whose narrative direction may seem familiar. Character reactions then make the failure legible: the game does not only say that an outcome went wrong, it supplies an in-world response that helps you understand the consequence.

This combination can make Ride Like the Wind seem less predictable than a game in which mythic scenes always resolve according to the canonical sequence. The uncertainty is visible at two levels: which situation the heroquest presents, and whether the chosen approach succeeds. A player who remembers the underlying myth may notice every departure, while a player who does not may experience the same system simply as a wide range of possible outcomes.

Surprise that remains surprising

Dunham contrasted this approach with an earlier design in which a surprise became predictable after players learned to expect it. Once a supposedly unusual event reliably repeats, it stops communicating unpredictability. Ride Like the Wind instead aims to preserve uncertainty by allowing the mythic sequence to depart from the expected story. The design emphasis is therefore not necessarily a larger number of random rolls; it is making the consequences of uncertainty harder to reduce to a memorized script.

Why the sequel can feel different with the same broad system

A later era changes the context

Lights Going Out carries forward the core Six Ages system but moves the story generations later. Its factions, political concerns, kinship pressures and supernatural threats are different. Those changes affect which conditions are common, which scenes are eligible and how costly a decision feels.

As a result, the same general selection machinery can produce a different subjective experience. A scene that would have been unusual in the first game may be ordinary in the sequel’s era, while a new category of problem may appear more often because the setting makes it relevant. This is a change in content and context, not proof that the sequel has reduced or increased a hidden randomness parameter.

Different event pools change the shape of surprise

A Sharp’s design discussion describes shared event categories alongside new categories for Lights Going Out. The pool from which the selector chooses therefore matters as much as the selector itself. A larger or differently themed pool can spread attention across more kinds of outcomes. A smaller pool can make individual events recur often enough to become familiar.

Players also bring expectations from the first game into the sequel. Recognizing a familiar category can make the sequel seem more predictable, even when its conditions and consequences differ. Conversely, a new political or supernatural category can make the later-era game feel less predictable because the player has fewer established expectations to rely on.

Scene count is not a randomness measurement

A Sharp reported in a 2022 development update that Lights Going Out had about 36% more scenes than Ride Like the Wind during development. That figure describes scene volume, not the frequency or probability of random outcomes. More scenes can mean a broader content pool, more conditional branches or more coverage of the sequel’s setting. It does not show that any individual scene is more or less likely to be selected.

Comparison Ride Like the Wind Lights Going Out What can be concluded
Scene selection Scenes are often selected at random, with conditions intended to keep them relevant or interesting. The sequel reuses the core game system, including the condition-aware approach described for Six Ages. Both are built around constrained variation rather than a wholly arbitrary sequence.
Heroquest uncertainty Mythic sequences can diverge from expected stories, and chance affects heroquest outcomes. The sequel’s setting and content differ; no published comparison of heroquest randomness is given. Ride Like the Wind has a clearly documented emphasis on mythic surprise, but not a measured higher randomness rate.
Setting and concerns The first game’s mythic world and original-era clan context shape its event conditions. The story takes place generations later, with changed factions, politics, kinship and supernatural threats. Different conditions and event categories can change how unpredictable the same system feels.
Development-era scene volume Baseline for the comparison. About 36% more scenes, according to A Sharp’s 2022 development update. Scene count is a content-size comparison, not a randomness statistic.

Four meanings of “more random”

1. More unexpected event selection

You may mean that the next scene is harder to guess. Condition-aware selection can create that feeling in either game, especially when several eligible scenes compete. The available material does not show that Ride Like the Wind selects from a less predictable distribution.

2. More possible consequences

You may instead mean that the same decision can lead to more different results. Changing relationships, resources and political conditions support this interpretation. Because later scenes inherit those changes, outcomes can branch without a single visible chain of scripted follow-ups.

3. More violations of narrative expectation

This is the strongest explanation specific to Ride Like the Wind. Its heroquests intentionally depart from familiar mythic sequences, and chance rolls can determine whether an approach succeeds. A surprising mythic reversal is more memorable than an ordinary change in event order, so players may estimate the whole game as more random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. A larger content pool

A larger pool can create more variety, but it does not automatically create more randomness. The sequel’s development-era scene count was reported as about 36% higher. That may increase the number of possible situations while leaving the selection rules unchanged.

How to compare your own play-throughs fairly

If you want to decide whether your impression comes from mechanics or from context, compare runs without treating a single unusual story as proof.

  1. Separate selection from outcome. Note whether the surprising part was which scene appeared or how a chosen action resolved. Heroquest chance primarily concerns the second question; the scene system concerns the first.
  2. Record the state before the scene. Write down the relevant relationship, resource and political conditions. A different state means you are not testing the same situation.
  3. Track delayed consequences. A follow-up may not appear immediately. Record intervening decisions before deciding that a relationship between two scenes is absent.
  4. Compare like with like. Use the same game, era context and type of situation before comparing your impressions with the other title.
  5. Look for repeated patterns, not one spectacular reversal. A memorable heroquest failure demonstrates that chance can matter; it does not establish a different overall probability distribution.

This approach cannot produce an official randomness score, because neither game publishes the data needed for one. It can, however, show whether your impression is driven by mythic reversals, state-dependent consequences or a broader event pool.

What is still unknown

The available developer material does not provide controlled outcome rates for the two games. It does not state that one title uses a higher randomization setting, publish the probability of a particular scene, or compare the number of successful and failed heroquest rolls across equivalent situations. The “about 36% more scenes” figure is explicitly a development-era content comparison.

That limitation should shape the wording of any comparison. It is accurate to say that Ride Like the Wind can feel more random because of its mythic surprises, chance-driven heroquests and state-dependent scenes. It is not accurate to claim that the game has been proven to be objectively more random than Lights Going Out.

Bottom line: perception, not a proven randomness gap

Ride Like the Wind’s distinctive feeling comes from the interaction of constrained random scene selection, an evolving clan state and heroquests designed to undermine fixed expectations. The sequel keeps the core system but changes the era, event pool and pressures that determine which surprises are relevant. Those changes can make one game feel more orderly and the other more volatile, even without a different underlying randomness setting.

Until the developers publish comparative probabilities or a controlled test, the defensible answer is: Ride Like the Wind feels more random because it makes uncertainty more visible and more meaningful, not because anyone has demonstrated a higher random-event rate.
