Economy rules, artificial intelligence, pathfinding, physics, procedural generation, user-built worlds, downloadable content, hardware, platform services, and saved state all interact. A release build can work in planned tests yet fail when millions of players create combinations the developer never reproduced.
Early patches are therefore normal, but they can also expose problems in existing saves and installed mods. The safest response is reversible: preserve the save folder, record the exact version and symptom, disable all modifications, test a new save, then reintroduce content systematically. Do not delete the only copy of a failing save or assume that reinstalling removes every mod file.

Why simulation games are unusually difficult to ship cleanly
A conventional game can test a relatively bounded sequence of levels and actions. A simulation has to keep a changing world coherent while many systems make decisions at once. A city builder may recalculate budgets, traffic, zoning, citizen behavior, utility networks, and rendering in the same frame. A life simulation can combine relationships, inventory, construction, careers, downloadable content, autonomy, and random events in an order the developer did not script.

The testing problem is combinatorial
EA gave a scale illustration for The Sims 4 in 2025: more than 2.4 quintillion possible combinations of Expansion Packs. Testing each combination for one second would take more than 77 billion years. Those figures describe The Sims 4 specifically, not an industry-wide average or a claim that every combination is equally likely.
Developers reduce that space with representative hardware, automated tests, compatibility matrices, and focused quality-assurance scenarios. They cannot run every possible household, city layout, mod list, save history, graphics driver, platform service state, and downloadable-content combination. A launch build is a finite snapshot tested against a finite sample.
Players create states internal tests never reached
Once a game ships, players create unusual buildings, huge populations, long-running worlds, unusual input sequences, and saves carried through several updates. They also combine content in ways that are logical to a player but absent from a test plan. Eastshade’s developer reported that the most time-consuming bugs were those for which quality assurance could not identify a reliable reproduction case, while many large issues were fixed during the first few weeks after launch. A bug that cannot be reproduced consistently takes longer to diagnose because engineers cannot confirm whether a proposed fix actually works.
What an early patch can do to an existing save
A patch does more than replace the executable. It may alter simulation rules, serialized data, dependencies, or the timing of calculations. An existing save contains world state created under the previous rules. When the new code reads that state, several outcomes are possible:
- The save loads and behaves normally.
- The save loads, but values, behavior, or objects change.
- The game crashes while deserializing the save.
- The save enters a loading loop or fails to appear in the menu.
- The executable starts normally, but one particular world remains unusable.
Compatibility is title-specific. A patch does not automatically invalidate every save, and a save that fails after an update is not proof that the file is permanently destroyed.
Large simulation reworks carry more transition risk
Paradox’s Cities: Skylines II guidance for the Economy 2.0 patch warned that the update was extensive, would change how the simulation runs, and would affect saves created before Patch Day. The same checklist gave “No guarantees for modded saves” and directed players to check for updates or instructions from mod authors. This is the practical distinction between a routine bug-fix patch and a system rework: the latter changes assumptions embedded in old world state.

Before a major update, copy the entire save directory to a separate location and keep at least one known-good save from before the update. Read the game’s patch notes for save warnings, mod requirements, and instructions about opening an old world. Do not overwrite the backup by repeatedly saving the same slot during testing.

Mods can depend on internal names, application programming interfaces, data formats, file locations, or simulation assumptions that a patch changes. A mod may still appear in a launcher while quietly writing state the new game cannot interpret. Other mods interact with one another, so removing one can leave data in a save even when its files are gone.
Paradox support states that with each major patch, most mods become outdated and existing saved games may not work. That does not mean every modded save is lost; it means the developer cannot guarantee compatibility when unofficial code depends on changing internals.
Use a clean launch as a diagnostic, not as a cure-all
For the PC version covered by Paradox’s support instructions, add --disableMods --noWorkshop to the game’s launch options. These flags test the game without installed modifications and Workshop content. If the game works with both options enabled, a mod or custom-content interaction is implicated. Remove the flags only after you have a backup and a plan to test current versions.
Reinstalling is not a reliable mod-removal method. Paradox warns that reinstalling may leave every mod directory behind, and Astroneer’s official troubleshooting report made the same point: leftover mod files can survive a reinstall. Preserve the saves folder, locate remaining add-on folders using the title’s support instructions, and remove or relocate them only after making a copy.

What Astroneer’s launch-crash reports show
Astroneer’s team reported that most early launch-crash reports were caused by mods. Its recommended test was to remove all mods and start a new save. That procedure separates a broken add-on or modded world from a failure that occurs before any save is loaded.

“Save corruption” describes several different failures
Corruption is an umbrella term rather than a single defect. It can mean a malformed file, missing serialized objects, a crash during deserialization, a loading loop, stale data from a removed mod, or state that became incompatible after a patch. The same symptom—such as returning to the title screen—can have different causes.
Examples of active causes
In an investigation of The Sims save failures, EA listed several lines of inquiry rather than one universal cause:
- Very large save data exceeding protobuf limits.
- Multiple processes competing while a save loads.
- Overstuffed or cheat-heavy lots.
- Mod data persisting after a mod is removed.
- Venue data carrying between saves.
The Sims team described the problem as “18 bugs in a trench coat.” That phrase is a developer characterization of multiple interacting defects, not a measured count that applies to every failed save.

Rockstar support identifies cheat codes as a common cause of saved games failing to load when the cheat-affected state was saved. Its general recommendation is to try a file saved before the cheat was entered. Treat that earlier file as a diagnostic checkpoint; do not overwrite it while experimenting with the newer one.
A reversible troubleshooting sequence
Follow these steps in order. Each one preserves information for the next decision.
1. Stop writing to the affected slot
Exit the game and copy or move the entire save directory before launching again. Keep the original copy read-only if your operating system supports that option. Make a second working copy for tests. If cloud synchronization is enabled, pause it or confirm which copy is authoritative so a damaged file is not synchronized over the backup.

2. Record the environment and exact symptom
Write down the game version, platform, operating-system version, recent patch date, installed downloadable content, active mods or custom-content packages, and the exact point of failure. “Crashes on launch,” “crashes while loading one city,” and “loads but produces missing objects” are different diagnostic cases.
3. Disable every mod and custom-content package
Use the title’s supported mod manager or launch option. On PC, the Paradox test uses --disableMods --noWorkshop. Do not disable only the newest mod: a dependency or an apparently unrelated asset may be the trigger. If the title stores add-ons in a separate folder, temporarily move that folder after preserving it.
4. Start a genuinely clean test save
With modifications disabled, create a new world or household rather than opening the affected save first. Use this result to split the problem:

5. Try an earlier known-good save
Use the newest backup that predates the symptom, major patch, cheat, or mod change. Rockstar specifically recommends a file saved before a problematic cheat. If an earlier file loads while the newest file does not, preserve both and avoid saving over the working version until the cause is understood.
6. Verify files or use the publisher’s repair function
Run the platform’s file-verification or repair command while the save backups remain outside the game’s active save path. This can replace missing or altered installation files, but it cannot reconstruct a malformed world state or update an incompatible mod. Reinstall only after preserving saves and removing leftover add-on directories according to the title’s support instructions. Astroneer’s guidance specifically warns that reinstalling can leave mod files behind.

7. Reintroduce content by binary isolation
Once a clean save works, install only current mod versions that explicitly support your game build. Enable one mod, or one small dependency group, and test on a separate throwaway save. Continue until the failure returns. The last change is a lead, not automatic proof: two mods can conflict, and a save may already contain stale data. Keep a list of the game version, mod versions, load order, platform, and reproduction steps.
8. Check known issues and report a reproducible case
Read the developer’s known-issues list and patch notes. Paradox maintains separate guidance for launch crashes and save-loading failures. When reporting, include the platform, game version, downloadable content, mod list, whether a clean save works, the earliest failing save, and the exact steps that reproduce the problem. A reliable reproduction gives engineers something they can confirm against a fix.

How to read common symptoms after an update
The game crashes before the main menu
Because no save is required to reproduce the failure, begin with a clean launch: disable mods and custom content, then start the game. If it still crashes, verify or repair the installation and consult current known issues. A crash that disappears when mods are disabled points to an add-on, dependency, or leftover mod directory rather than proving that the base game is faultless.
The menu opens, but one old save will not load
Protect the file, test a new save, and then try an earlier backup. This pattern implicates serialized world state, stale mod data, a cheat-affected state, or a patch incompatibility more strongly than a missing executable file. Do not repeatedly attempt to save over the failing slot.
The save loads but objects, economy, or behavior are wrong
This is not necessarily file corruption. A patch can intentionally change simulation rules, and a mod can leave data behind after removal. Compare the world with a pre-patch backup, read the update notes, and test the same content without mods on a separate copy.
What players can and cannot conclude from launch bugs
There is no reliable industry-wide launch-bug rate, average patch size, or universal probability that a save will break. The available examples establish why interaction-heavy games are difficult to test and why major updates and mods raise compatibility risk; they do not support a percentage prediction for an individual title.
Likewise, a working clean save does not guarantee that an older modded world can be recovered. It shows that the base installation can reach a playable state under the tested conditions. Recovery depends on the game’s save format, the patch’s changes, the mod’s behavior, and whether an earlier backup exists.
