Why semiconductor stocks can fall even when demand for chips remains strong

Semiconductor stocks can fall while chip demand grows because investors are pricing each company’s future earnings, not simply counting industry-wide sales. Demand may be concentrated in a few products, customers may be reducing orders to clear inventory, selling prices may be weakening, factories may be under-utilized, or a company may report charges that outweigh operational improvements.

Industry growth is not the same as growth for every chipmaker

A semiconductor market statistic combines dozens of product categories, end markets and regions. It can rise strongly even when a particular manufacturer’s products are stagnant or declining. The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) release of March 6, 2026, reported global semiconductor sales of $795.6 billion in calendar 2025, a 26.2% increase from 2024. Fourth-quarter sales reached $238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year.

That headline concealed large differences. WSTS said the computer segment grew by more than 60%, helped by data-center infrastructure and artificial-intelligence systems, while discrete devices remained slightly negative. Japan’s semiconductor sales fell 4.3% for the year. A company concentrated in discrete components, industrial equipment or Japanese customers therefore could face weak results during a year when the overall market expanded rapidly.

Measure Reported result What it does—and does not—show
Global semiconductor sales, 2025 $795.6 billion, up 26.2% year over year Industry revenue across products and regions; not the return of any stock
Global semiconductor sales, Q4 2025 $238.9 billion, up 38.4% from Q4 2024 Quarterly market growth; not proof that every company grew
Computer segment, 2025 More than 60% growth Strong demand concentrated in one broad segment
Discrete devices, 2025 Slightly negative A category that did not share the computer segment’s expansion
Japan sales, 2025 Down 4.3% Regional divergence inside the global total

AI accelerators, high-bandwidth memory and networking components can be in short supply while automotive, industrial, consumer or legacy-node chips remain oversupplied. The relevant question for a stock is not “Are chips in demand?” but “Are this company’s products, customers and factories positioned in the part of the market that is growing, at profitable prices?”

End demand can remain healthy while orders temporarily fall

Shipments to a chip company are separated from final consumer or business demand by distributors, contract manufacturers and original-equipment makers. Those customers can build inventory during a strong period and then stop ordering while they use what is already on hand. Their own sales may eventually recover without immediately creating new semiconductor purchases.

How an inventory correction works

  1. A customer orders more components than it needs for near-term production because lead times are long or it wants a safety buffer.
  2. End-market demand slows, or the customer becomes more confident that supply will be available.
  3. The customer reduces or delays new orders while consuming existing stock.
  4. The chipmaker’s reported revenue falls before final demand necessarily collapses.
  5. Orders resume when customer inventories reach a more normal level.

Microchip Technology described this timing effect in its Form 10-Q for the nine months ended December 31, 2025. It cited customers’ high inventory and delayed or reduced orders as primary reasons for the year-over-year sales decline. In the three months ended that date, however, mixed-signal microcontroller sales rose 10.0% year over year, which Microchip attributed mainly to customers working through excess inventory and new design wins entering production. Its reported inventory fell to 201 days at December 31, 2025, from 251 days at March 31, 2025.

Those figures describe Microchip’s fiscal periods and inventory position; they are not an average for the semiconductor industry. They do show why a company can report weak trailing-period sales even when its customers’ products still have a market. They also explain why investors may react to the timing of the recovery: a stock can decline if management says normalization will take longer than expected, even when a rebound remains plausible.

Units can rise while revenue or profit deteriorates

Chipmakers earn money from the price and mix of what they sell, not from unit volume alone. A manufacturer may ship more devices but receive less revenue per device, or sell a larger share of low-margin products. Contract terms, spot-market exposure and customer bargaining power determine how quickly prices respond.

Memory prices are especially cyclical

Micron’s 2026 Form 10-K, dated September 3, 2026, reported that annual changes in DRAM and NAND average selling prices over the preceding five fiscal years ranged from an increase of approximately 200% to a decrease of approximately 50%. The filing also warned that additional industry supply or slower demand could push prices down. Thus, strong current demand and the risk of a future price decline can exist at the same time.

Memory products illustrate operating leverage: a small change in price applied to very large production volumes can move revenue and gross margin sharply. Investors may sell a memory stock when they believe supply additions will end a favorable pricing period, even before current-quarter demand data turns negative.

Mix and contract structure matter in other chip categories

Microchip explains that gross profit changes with sales volume, product mix, geographic mix, selling prices and costs. A company supplying long-lived industrial designs may have more stable contractual pricing than a commodity memory producer, but it can still face an unfavorable mix if customers postpone higher-value projects and continue buying simpler parts. Conversely, a design win can improve future revenue only after the customer’s product enters volume production.

Factories turn modest weakness into large earnings swings

Semiconductor manufacturing requires expensive equipment, clean rooms, engineers and facilities that do not disappear when production falls. Micron states that many manufacturing costs are fixed. Lower utilization can therefore increase cost per gigabit and raise inventory carrying costs. Technology transitions, new-fab ramps and capacity additions can add costs before the related output generates revenue.

This creates a gap between market demand and earnings. Suppose a factory was planned to run near full capacity and management adds equipment based on that forecast. If orders arrive later than expected, the same fixed expenses are spread over fewer wafers. Gross margin falls even if the company still sells more chips than it did several years earlier. A stock can decline when investors see utilization or capital-spending plans moving in the wrong direction, because those indicators affect future margins.

Capacity can also arrive unevenly. Several competitors may expand at once after a period of shortages. When their output reaches customers, supply can exceed demand and force prices lower. The resulting margin pressure may be visible first in guidance, before it appears in an industry sales total.

A positive operating metric may coexist with a loss or a charge

Investors evaluate the income statement as a whole. Higher gross profit does not guarantee positive operating income if research spending, restructuring, write-downs or inventory charges rise faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intel’s Q2 2026 filing provides an example. It described higher gross profit while also reporting an inventory-related charge to align product mix with customer demand and a $2.1 billion operating loss. The lesson is not that every Intel quarter has the same pattern; it is that one favorable metric cannot substitute for examining operating expenses, charges, cash flow and guidance.

Inventory charges can be particularly important. If products are no longer expected to sell at their recorded cost, accounting rules may require a write-down. The charge reduces reported profit even though the inventory may have been purchased during an earlier period of strong demand. A stock may fall when investors conclude that the charge signals obsolete products, an unfavorable mix or weaker customer orders ahead.

Stocks move on expectations, not just on reported demand

Share prices incorporate what investors already expect. If analysts and shareholders are positioned for exceptional growth, a company can report higher sales and still disappoint if growth is slower, margins are lower or guidance is cautious. Conversely, a stock can rise on weak current results when management gives credible evidence that conditions are bottoming.

Valuation magnifies this effect. A high-priced stock requires years of strong earnings to justify its value. Any indication of slower AI spending, lower memory prices, delayed factory ramps or tougher competition can reduce the earnings investors are willing to pay for. The resulting repricing may occur even while the broader semiconductor market is expanding.

Company filings also describe risks that affect perceived uncertainty: cyclical supply-demand imbalances, excess inventory, price erosion, customer concentration, competition and changing end-market demand. These are risk disclosures rather than proof that a particular share-price move had one specific cause. To identify a proximate cause, you need the company, the date of the decline, contemporaneous news, earnings or guidance, analyst expectations and the stock’s valuation at that time.

What the major company examples illustrate

AMD: exposure to cycles, competition and uneven end markets

AMD’s filing dated May 6, 2026, characterizes semiconductors as highly cyclical and identifies supply-demand imbalances, price erosion, excess inventory and inventory adjustments, variation among end markets and competition as potential pressures. It also notes that AI growth increases the need to design and deliver products that meet demand. This is a description of potential business risk, not evidence that a current AMD decline was caused by any one factor.

Microchip Technology: recovery can be sequential rather than immediate

Microchip’s nine-month sales decline and later quarterly microcontroller growth show how customer inventory can distort comparisons. A recovery in one product line or quarter does not automatically restore company-wide revenue, particularly when other customers remain cautious. The change from 251 to 201 inventory days is useful context for that company’s normalization process, not a benchmark investors should apply to every chipmaker.

Micron: strong AI demand does not remove the next pricing cycle

Micron’s 2026 filing says AI-driven memory and storage demand was outpacing industry supply and discusses recent pricing and margin improvement. The same filing warns that prices could decline if manufacturers add supply faster than demand grows. Investors therefore track both current shortages and future capacity: the first supports near-term earnings, while the second can threaten the following cycle.

Intel: product mix and charges can overwhelm gross-profit gains

Intel’s Q2 2026 operating loss and inventory-related charge demonstrate why revenue, gross profit and operating income must be read together. A company can improve one layer of the income statement while absorbing costs associated with products that no longer match customer demand.

A practical method for diagnosing a falling semiconductor stock

Use the following sequence instead of inferring a cause from an industry headline:

  1. Set the exact window. Record the date and size of the share-price move, then identify whether it occurred before or after an earnings release, guidance update, industry data publication or competitor announcement.
  2. Separate market exposure. List the company’s products—such as memory, microcontrollers, processors, analog devices or discrete components—and map them to automotive, industrial, consumer, communications, cloud or AI customers.
  3. Check orders and channel inventory. Read management’s comments on distributor stock, customer cancellations, lead times, backlog and sequential orders. Do not treat final-user demand as equivalent to this quarter’s shipments.
  4. Track price and mix. Compare average selling prices, premium-product share, geographic mix and gross margin. Rising units with falling prices can reduce earnings.
  5. Examine factory utilization and costs. Look for utilization rates, start-up expenses, technology transitions, capacity additions and inventory carrying costs. Fixed-cost absorption often explains why profit changes faster than revenue.
  6. Read every major charge. Identify inventory write-downs, restructuring, impairment, warranty or acquisition costs, and determine whether management calls them recurring or unusual.
  7. Compare results with expectations. A year-over-year increase may still be below consensus or below the company’s prior guidance. Review the outlook for the next quarter and full year.
  8. Test the valuation. Ask how much growth the stock price already assumes. A small reduction in expected margins can have a large effect on a richly valued company.
  9. Check competitors and substitutes. A rival’s new product, customer win, capacity expansion or price cut can change the outlook even when total industry demand remains positive.

How to compare two semiconductor companies fairly

Comparisons are meaningful only when the same fiscal periods and definitions are used. Keep each company’s reporting date attached to its figures; AMD’s cited filing is from May 6, 2026, Microchip’s from February 5, 2026, Micron’s annual filing from September 3, 2026, and Intel’s example covers Q2 2026.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Product and end-market exposure Which categories and customers are growing, and which are shrinking?
Inventory and orders Are customers buying for current production or consuming stock already in the channel?
Prices and contracts Are prices negotiated annually, fixed in contracts, or exposed to spot-market swings?
Product mix and margins Is growth coming from premium products, lower-margin volume, or a changing geographic mix?
Utilization and capacity Are factories full, ramping, or carrying fixed costs against reduced output?
Customer concentration and competition Could one customer delay purchases, or could a rival take share with a new design?
Expectations and valuation Did results and guidance beat what investors had already priced in?

The central takeaway

“Chip demand is strong” is an industry observation, not an investment conclusion. The WSTS figures show that 2025 was a powerful year in aggregate, but segment and regional results diverged. Company filings show additional breaks in the chain from demand to shareholder returns: inventory timing can delay orders, prices can reverse, product mix can dilute margins, fixed factory costs can magnify weakness, and accounting charges can turn operational progress into a reported loss.

When a semiconductor stock falls, identify the company and date before assigning a cause. Compare its products, customers, inventory, prices, utilization, costs, guidance and valuation with what investors expected. Without that company-specific evidence, a strong industry demand number cannot explain the move.
