Why Sell on AWS Marketplace? Key Benefits, Fees, and Fit

Selling on AWS Marketplace can give software, data, and services providers another route to AWS customers, with marketplace tools for discovery, procurement, billing, and negotiated offers. It is not a promise of leads or revenue: the channel is most useful when your product fits AWS’s requirements and your target buyers value purchasing through AWS.

What AWS Marketplace offers sellers

AWS Marketplace is a curated catalog where customers can find, buy, deploy, and manage third-party software, data, and services. Potential sellers include independent software vendors, channel partners, managed service providers, and individuals with eligible AWS-compatible offerings. Products can include AMIs, containers, machine-learning products, SaaS, professional services, AI agents, and data products through AWS Data Exchange. AWS’s seller overview describes the marketplace and its product categories.

For a seller, the practical proposition is access to a procurement and transaction channel—not automatic demand generation. AWS reports that customers had more than 3 million AWS Marketplace subscriptions, but that platform-wide figure does not estimate how many buyers will find or purchase any particular listing. AWS’s seller journey page also presents findings and customer examples that should be read in their stated context.

Why should I sell on AWS Marketplace?

Reach buyers already using AWS procurement

A listing can make an offering discoverable to AWS customers and give sellers another way to meet buyers where they already evaluate or procure cloud-related products. This matters most when your target accounts use AWS and prefer to handle purchases through its marketplace. A listing alone does not guarantee visibility, qualified leads, or sales; sellers still need a route to reach and support the right buyers.

Reduce purchasing friction for some customers

AWS Marketplace supports purchasing workflows such as private offers and standardized license terms. These options can help when a buyer wants a negotiated agreement but prefers to transact through AWS. The buyer’s procurement rules and AWS account arrangements still affect whether the route works in practice. AWS Marketplace features describes procurement capabilities.

Use marketplace transaction operations

AWS says it handles marketplace billing and payments, and provides seller capabilities that include metering, collections, and payment disbursement. That can reduce some transaction administration, but it does not transfer responsibility for the product, customer support, or the commercial relationship away from the seller. AWS Marketplace Seller Guide explains the marketplace model and seller responsibilities.

Offer public pricing or negotiate buyer-specific terms

Sellers can use public offers or, where eligible, negotiate private offers with buyer-specific pricing, end-user license agreements, and payment schedules. The exact options depend on product type and marketplace rules. AWS requires a seller to have at least one active public listing before issuing private offers; some product types or delivery patterns cannot use them, and private offers do not support bring-your-own-license (BYOL). AWS’s private-offer guidance sets out the conditions.

Explore partner and co-sell routes

AWS describes seller go-to-market resources, co-selling, and consulting partner channels. These can offer additional routes to market, but access and eligibility depend on the seller’s circumstances; listing a product does not automatically enroll a seller in a program or generate partner opportunities. AWS Marketplace for Partners outlines partner routes and resources.

What reported seller results do—and do not—show

AWS’s seller journey page attributes two findings to the IDC Report 2025: 48% of partners preferred AWS Marketplace’s payment systems, and 45% reported shortened sales cycles and improved operational efficiency. The page excerpt does not provide the report’s full methodology, so these are partner-reported findings as presented by AWS, not a forecast for an individual seller. AWS’s seller journey page is the source for how the figures are presented.

AWS also reports Forrester Consulting findings of 234% ROI, 50% faster deal closure, and 4–5X richer deal sizes based on 14 partner interviews and data aggregation. These findings concern channel partners, not all software vendors, and the cited passage does not identify a publication year. They should not be treated as a typical seller’s expected return. The same AWS page quotes Contentsquare’s Chief Product Officer describing a company-specific 14-times year-over-year increase in enterprise software sales through AWS Marketplace; that testimonial is an individual company outcome, not a general performance benchmark. AWS’s seller journey page presents these claims.

How much does AWS Marketplace charge sellers?

AWS’s published base listing fees depend on offer type and product category. The rates below are the fees AWS says became effective January 5, 2024; regional uplifts may apply, and channel partner private offers add 0.5 percentage points. Check AWS’s current fee schedule before setting prices or committing to a sales route. AWS Marketplace pricing provides the fee details.

Offer type Product or contract value Published base fee
Public offer SaaS and AWS Data Exchange 3%
Public offer Server products, including AMIs, containers, and machine learning 20%
Private offer Total contract value below $1 million 3%
Private offer Total contract value from $1 million to under $10 million 2%
Private offer Total contract value of $10 million or more 1.5%
Private offer renewal Renewal 1.5%

Those marketplace fees are only one part of the economics. Model discounts, partner costs, taxes, and the staff time required to operate the channel alongside the applicable fee before deciding whether the margin works for your business.

What does seller setup involve?

Joining the marketplace is more than uploading a product page. AWS’s seller process includes account creation and registration, required banking and tax information, product and pricing selection, product preparation, submission for review, and publication approval. Paid seller eligibility and tax or banking requirements vary by jurisdiction, and some markets require additional Know Your Customer checks. Data providers have separate eligibility and onboarding requirements. AWS seller registration instructions describe the process.

  1. Confirm eligibility and seller setup. Create or use an AWS account, register as a seller, and provide the banking, tax, and identity information required for your jurisdiction.
  2. Choose a product type and pricing model. Check that your delivery method and commercial terms suit your product and buyer expectations.
  3. Prepare and submit the product. Meet the applicable product, delivery, security, support, and update requirements, then submit the listing for AWS review.
  4. Publish and operate the listing. After approval, maintain the product information and handle buyer engagement, customer support, and ongoing commercial responsibilities.

Is selling on AWS Marketplace worth it?

Use these questions to assess whether the channel fits your business before investing in a launch.

  • Buyer overlap: Are your target customers already using AWS and likely to value its procurement route, or would the marketplace simply duplicate your existing demand-generation work?
  • Product readiness: Can your product meet AWS’s requirements for its chosen format, delivery, security, support, and updates?
  • Unit economics: After marketplace fees, discounts, partner costs, taxes, and operating effort, does the expected margin remain acceptable?
  • Procurement value: Do AWS billing, contract options, or private offers address a real obstacle for your buyers?
  • Operational capacity: Can your team keep the listing current, respond to buyers, manage offers, and support customers after purchase?

AWS Marketplace is best evaluated as a sales and procurement channel. If your product and buyers align with AWS, its purchasing and transaction workflows may justify the fees and operating work. If that buyer fit is weak, compare the channel’s costs and effort with your other routes to market before launching.
